Chapter List

Chapter One For Christmas this year, Coyote Bellaway wished he would come awake one of these mornings all grown up. Maybe then he"d be able to figure out what to do for his little sister, Sprite, and for himself, too.
Chapter Three Vic knew he"d been hard on Katherine Fairchild last night. He tried to tell himself she deserved to be put in her place, brought down a peg or two, but he knew that wasn"t why he"d acted like such a creep.
Chapter 3
Chapter Five Vic felt rather than heard the grief beneath her attempt at a matter-of-fact tone. His first instinct was to pull the car over to the side of the road and take her in his arms. He kept on driving. He sensed that she needed him to maintain an even keel here and not do anything while she got out what she had to say.
Chapter Seven *! i Once they had called the police, Katherine retreated across : Ten Broeck Street to lean against Vic"s car. Her coat was smudged with winter road soot from its dusty metal surface, but she didn"t care.
Chapter 6
Chapter Eight On their way back to the center in Vic"s car, Katherine shook her head and chuckled at herself. She often felt like shaking him in exasperation when they were alone together. ; Yet, as soon as she sensed that he was under attack from the police officer, she"d leapt to champion him like a she-bear at a threat to her clan.
Chapter Nine Vic was startled by the flurry of knocks at the door of his restored, nineteenth-century row house on Livingston Avenue. Several sharp, persistent raps in quick succession were followed by just as insistent pressure on the doorbell. Someone really wanted to get in.
Chapter Ten This had been a day of shocks and bewilderment for Katherine. She might have thought there was nothing left in the world to surprise her at the moment. At least, she might have considered herself way too exhausted by it all to master so much as a show of mild curiosity. Yet, when she burst through Vic Maltese"s front door and then had a moment to calm down a bit, what she found there could hardly have been less expected.

Chapter Thirteen Vic was more angry with himself than he was with Katherine.
Chapter Fourteen Katherine couldn"t understand what had Megan so excited. She had rushed into the office, grabbed her by the arms and pulled her out from behind the desk.
Chapter Fifteen Katherine didn"t want Vic to follow her. She"d told him she would be all right on her own, even though she wasn"t at all certain that was true. She had to weigh what could be more dangerous to her, the chance that she"d be revisited by the animals who slashed Daniel"s portrait or the possibility of ending up somewhere alone with Vic Maltese. In her office earlier she"d felt drawn to him. He"d leaned over her desk again, just as he"d done in the morning, but this second time there"d been no shield of anger to protect her. This time there was only Vic, inches away, and that irresistible urge she felt to move even closer. A magnetic attraction, that"s what it was, as if she were being drawn inevitably to him by a power she was helpless to resist.
Chapter Sixteen Katherine didn"t even pay lip service to a protest against Vic coming along with her this time. She didn"t know what to think about his claims of arch villains being involved in the frightening events of this week. Whatever level villains they might be, she now understood without question how stupid it would be to risk running into them on her own. She let Vic drive her car back to her place. No matter how stubborn she might be about self-reliance, even she had to admit that the hospital experience had her too unsettled to be safe on the road right now. Besides, she was deeply tired. Still, she didn"t intend to sleep at her apartment. She was only stopping there to pick up some things. She"d decided that even before Vic found the note. She was on the phone to the hospital at the time.
Chapter Seventeen Vic woke up and knew immediately where he was. The feel of the place and what had happened in it had followed him into his dreams and surrounded him now as bright morning sun streamed through the filmy curtains over the tall, wide window of the duplex suite. On another morning, he might have flung his arm up to shut out the light or groaned and pulled the pillow over his head. Facing the dawn of a new day hadn"t always been his favorite thing. Now, Vic faced the brightness and smiled to himself. Today would be different from those other mornings. Except that. He had turned slowly from the window. He was still at least Partly caught up in the dream of last night, a dream that was almost too wonderful to be true. He had stretched his arm across the pillow, as if to take hold of that dream once more in the morning light. Except that Katherine was gone.
Chapter Nineteen Coyote wasn"t sure exactly what made him crawl into the back of Miss Fairchild"s car in the first place. The parking lot at the Arbor Hill Center Was cold, and too open to be safe for hiding. He had the idea of waiting near the center till n.o.body was around, then sneaking inside to look for Sprite. School was out today for Christmas. He couldn"t find her at Tooley"s place, so he thought Sprite might turn up here. He knew he was grabbing at straws, like they say, but he couldn"t think what else to do. While he was waiting, he"d ducked down behind Miss Fairchild"s car to get out of the wind. That"s when he saw a big guy coming out of the center. He wasn"t the man Coyote"d been running away from, but in a way this guy reminded Coyote of that man in the black car who"d dumped what could have been a body in the alleyway on Broadway.
Chapter 18
Chapter Twenty What Vic hadn"t understood till this very minute was one of the reasons he"d never told this story to anyone. He didn"t really know how. He"d wanted to grab Katherine in his arms and kiss her when they were alone in his parents" mansion. He didn"t follow through on his instincts, and not because he was afraid she would push him away. She might do that, but he"d try again till she melted against him and returned his kiss with the pa.s.sion he knew well from last night. He hadn"t put his arms around her because he was holding himself back from that closeness, the closeness that would bring him to this minute, when he"d have to tell his story.
Chapter Twenty-One They made it across town to the Cathedral in record time, even with Vic taking the time to change out of the Santa Claus suit.
Chapter Twenty- Two What Coyote was saying had to be too fantastic to be true. Yet, Katherine found herself believing him. Then, he yelled out, "The man from the black car. There he is."
