There was a lifeless body lying in a refuse dump, it was a remote area. Her eyes wide open, lips unyielding and stillness that provoked denial. Her name was Ifeoluwa and her corpse had spent over fteen hours away from discovery, rigor-mortis had settled and the large stab wounds on her body had stopped bleeding long ago. Two days pa.s.sed, and the stench of death battled with the wind, travelling miles away and carrying the overpowering smell of loss. A man discovered the decaying body and soon alerted the authorities—the police carried the corpse to the morgue for identication and detectives sni ed around for clues.

Lanre was stricken by grief, he had two daughters but with the death of his rst child, life became unbearable. Guilt fretted at him, and he couldn"t help but blame himself for not keeping a close eye on his favourite daughter. Who had the audacity to take something so precious away from him?

Lanre"s eyes were xed on the clock all day, legs tapped the carpeted oor and nails dug in the worn-out-armchair. As soon as it struck midnight, he set out on a mission that invoked evil. He will not leave matters in the hands of clueless policemen.

The grave yard was quiet to those who lacked spiritual awareness, he could hear the cacophony of troubled ghosts. The air was cold and the hairs on his forearms spiked in reaction, his nostrils exed at the chill weather and his hands twitched in antic.i.p.ation. He held a black horn wrapped in red cloth and called out to her spirit, the air shrilled as magic intercepted it, his voice loud enough it awakened every grumpy spirits in slumber. After the rites, he walked away without turning back. As tempting as it was to glance behind him, he knew there will be great consequences if he did so. He stared at the black road ahead, and chanted a song known to stroke the pride of his deity.

Ife"s spirit was confused at rst but as soon she realized her purpose, she took her beautiful form, not the dirty out t and decayed face. She knew time was of the essence and her appearance only temporary; she felt a pure energy swirl inside her. She remembered who took her life, and knew exactly what to do. The ghosts around her, shivered as they carved a path for her departure. The darkness that brewed within, consumed her. She walked with a perfect stride and unrelenting pace. The living was so wrapped up in their business to notice, a taboo walked on earth in pursuit of blood. She wouldn"t rest till it was done. She wandered about and nally felt her killer"s presence close, she couldn"t remember much from her life but she recalled tiny bits of an elderly man. She could feel her renewed esh had started decay all over again. It was torturous but her mission came rst.

She stood in front of a brown bungalow, her slayers aura emanated from the building. Ife pa.s.sed through the black gate like physics was just a simple imagination and didn"t apply in the real world.

Staring at her killer, he was asleep with a pet.i.te woman wrapped around him. Ife could tell the woman was very familiar. She reached for the dark energy within her, in the process it sparked a few memories to life. Slowly Ife sat on the chair close to the bed, she knew of their betrayal but with that realization, emotions were non-existent.

The stench of her body gave out her presence, it awoken the couple. The sight of her drove them insane. Quickly they clung to each other before gunning for the door, which was

locked—it was spell bound and screams that cooked within the house was trapped inside. The squeals continued as they rattled the door in terror, Ife stood.

"I thought you killed her", the woman panicked, eyes wide as saucers.

"I did, I killed your sister. I was sure of it", he stared at her in horror.

"Why?" Ife asked.

"Please don"t kill us, I am so sorry" her husband sobbed.

"You parasite! You just have to ruin everything for me. I should have known. Father raised you, didn"t he?" she composed herself.

"You have no power over us, all you can do is scare us into confessing and I am not ready to do that" she screamed, although her voice revealed dread; nevertheless, she stood her ground. She had seen ghosts before. Born in the Olaleye"s bloodline guaranteed one being strong spiritually.

"I killed you because you were always the lucky one, you had the ideal husband and was daddy"s favourite. Everyone loved Ife, so I charmed your husband to do my bidding. As if that was not enough, you got a high earning job. I mean how can one person have it all?" Derele snorted, angry at her sister"s ghost. Ife approached her and she signalled her to halt.

"Duro! kini o fe se? O to be" she raised her hand in defence; there was darkness in her eyes. Soon Derele began chanting spells that gave her colossal power to trap Ife. The wind swished in, swirling around them like a mini tornado. Curtains apped and the lights ickered, such energy threatened to detonate. Ife stood motionless, trapped by her sister"s incantations, her eyes turned pitch black and her soulless gaze made Derele shiver in fright. With the burning magic within her, Ife broke the invincible bond that kept her prisoner, she moved. Derele couldn"t hide her shock and she faltered in her spells which gave her sister"s spirit the upper hand.

Ife pounced on Derele, her rotten teeth sank into her neck and tore at it. Spitting out her juicy esh—blood spurted out from her open gash. She dug her ngers in her sockets and watched her eyes explode. Derele died on the spot and slowly Ife turned to her husband who had pa.s.sed out, she knew he wasn"t at fault but he had a hand in her death. Her b.l.o.o.d.y hands reached out to him and it took every jot of darkness within her to halt her attempt to kill, it was the most di cult thing to do—given she was dead and had no free will.

She wrapped her hands around his neck and felt the warmth of his skin. Ife knew she once loved him, she shrieked willing her soul to ignore orders, her trembling hands ghting for control and with so much will, she stopped squeezing. Within seconds she dematerialized, returning to the land of the dead.
