The sound of a phone ringing took Tao Jun"s attention from the case she was going to be defending in a few weeks time. There was no number on display, this caused a small frown to appear on her face."Mhhmmm...who could this be?"
Unsure, but wanting to know the ident.i.ty of the caller, the lawyer picked up the call.
"h.e.l.lo, who am I speaking to?"
There was no response on the other end, she went on to ask again, only to hear a heavy breathing on the other end. Rather than being scared that the caller refused to reveal themselves. Taking the phone from her ear, to look at the screen of the red cell phone, Tao Jun pressed the red "call end" icon on her phone, before dropping it on her desk to resume what she was looking at.
Not too long after, she heard a knock at her door, as a paralegal snuck a head through to remind her of the lunch she had scheduled with a client at a nearby restaurant. So engrossed with what she was reading, not knowing that time had gone and she was almost running late for her appointment.
The attractive looking lawyer thanked the Male paralegal who had on a formal dark suit, he responded with a cheeky salute to her, running back to his desk like the little kid he was, compared to the woman that he spoke with. Rising from where she sat, the lawyer gathered her things, as she made her way out of the nicely furnished office.
Outside, it the rain had died down, she kept walking, so focused on where she needed to be that she did notice the car that was parked at the front of the law firm, a man got out of it and closely followed her towards the main street where she could hail a cab. When he saw she was far enough from the firm, but also secluded from calling out for help, since everyone walked by either looking at their phones or driving pa.s.s or distracted by other things. There was no bus stop where the firm nor its surroundings.
A while later, the lawyer felt a p.r.i.c.kling sensation at her neck, as though someone was following her, on turning to see who it may be, that was when she heard a low clear deep voice as something sharp pressed against her lower back, "Don"t turn around, if not I"ll run you through with the knife in my hand."
That alone confirmed what she felt poking her from behind, the man was a tad taller than Tao Jun.
"Why didn"t I sense there was someone following me?"
As the thought ran through her mind, she laughed inwardly, picturing the faces of her sworn brothers if they knew that she fell for such an easy trap.
Moving in accordance to his directive, the lawyer did as though she had totally surrendered to his demand, only to suddenly turn around to hit him, the move somehow worked in catching her a.s.sailant off guard, but she didn"t count on the angle at which he was going to retaliate from, with a sharp twist of his wrist, he drove the knife into her stomach.
Pa.s.sersby thought it was a fight between lovers and kept walking, none of them noticed the knife that dug into her, since he s.h.i.+fted in such a way as to block the sight, thereby preventing any form of help from getting to her. Unknown to her, a black car with dark tinted window was tailing them, from across the road from the firm, stopping by the side of the road with its blinkers on. The mistake the lawyer made was thinking the man acted alone, until she heard a vaguely familiar voice,
"Ms Jun, we seem to meet at the most unusual place."
Not the type to easily give in to fear, but for some unknown reason she couldn"t stop the chill that ran through her, even though the voice sounded easygoing.
That was the last thing she heard, as she felt a moist white cloth cover her mouth, neither seeing nor hearing anymore, her body fell into a deep sleep right there by the side walk.
