[Sat.u.r.day, Night]With only just over an hour left on my shift, I tried everything I could to avoid Kaylee. I decided to stay at the back in the warehouse and move boxes while she took the front and served customers. It was a small company we were the only people dumb enough to take the late shifts, even our boss went home. I was torn, unsure if I should quit or not, my parents would kill me if I quit but surely they would understand, right?
Or am I just being selfish?
We both carried on working with little interaction, there were times where I could see she wanted to talk to me, but I just kept working to distract myself. She"s probably bored and wanted to talk about something, but I just want the day to end.

Once we had dealt with the last customer it was time for us to pack everything away and lock up for the night. It was 11 pm and I was worried about Kaylee walking home on her own, as much as I hate to admit it I can"t let her walk by herself.
"Kaylee… It"s kinda dark and cold out so I"ll walk you a bit of the way home."
"Oh, you don"t have to. I go this way, so."
"It"s fine, I also have to walk that way."
Kaylee looked at me and said with a childish smile on her face
"Alright then, let"s go!"
We both walked in silence along the dimly light path, our only source of light came from the cars that pa.s.sed us every now and then and streetlights that hadn"t been changed in years. The wind was starting to pick up whilst Kaylee tried to keep herself warm by blowing into her hands.
"You cold? You can have my jacket if you want, I"m surprisingly resistant to the cold."
"Hm." Kaylee looked at me as if she had just remembered I was there.
"Ah. no, it"s fine."
I didn"t know how to bring up a conversation. I didn"t know what to say. She seemed worried about something and I want to help her, but I don"t know how. Maybe it"s me?
"S-so, you doing anything for Halloween tomorrow?" I tried my best to not be awkward.
"Hm. Nope, just working."
"Working huh? You seem to work a lot."
"Yeah. I need money. When"s your next shift?"
"I don"t know, I haven"t thought about it yet."
"I see. Well, maybe we"ll be working buddies again."
Kaylee"s voice lifted compared to before. As much as It hurt to be around her I can"t help but want to talk to her and learn more about her. I guess no matter what I do, these feelings won"t be going away sometime soon.
-BEEP BEEP-
The sound of a horn pulled me out of my fantasy, as a car that stopped on the other side of the road slowly rolled the window down.
"Kaylee, I"m here to pick you up."
"Ah. Simon!"
As if this couldn"t get any worse.
"Well, I guess this is where we split," I said.

"Seems that way. Ah, I kno-"
-BEEP BEEP-
"Hang on Simon! I"m just saying goodbye! Ethan, Give me your phone."
"Huh?" as confused as I was I didn"t question it, I handed over my phone to her without thinking.
When I handed her over the phone she started to type something but before she could finish typing she stopped and stared at the screen.
-BEEEEEEEP-
The sound of the car"s horn woke her up as she looked over to it; as if she was lost in thought. She eventually finished what she was typing and handed the phone back to me.
"Hehe. Sorry about that. I gave you my number so I can contact you about work. I"ve gotta go but I"ll see you at school. Thanks for walking with me."
"N-no problem. I"ll see you at school."
I"m sure I was imagining things, but I felt as if I saw Kaylee"s expression dropped as she got into the car. I"m probably just imagining it.
I watched as Kaylee and Simon drove off, standing there with the whistling of the wind to stop me from going insane.
I checked my phone and saw that she edited the contact I already had of her, there was only one number inside, a new one I hadn"t seen before.
"I guess this is her real number.
better turn around and head home then. Good thing I like walking."
