1780Lena and I have turned a woman named Eleanor, but not just any woman, a woman with an unborn child. Lena was tending to Eleanor as her midwife while she was with child. Eleanor began having problems with her heartbeat; her body was not taking well to the carriage of a child. Lena was quite fond of Eleanor and wanted to save her. She asked if I thought it was a good idea to change her so late in her pregnancy and after some persuasion from Lena, I agreed.
The next night, Lena and I went to Eleanor"s to change her. Her husband asked us if we were going to save her and the baby. Lena explained to them both that we had a plan. She explained what we were and that it would save Eleanor. They discussed it among each other and decided that it might be Eleanor"s only salvation.
Eleanor"s husband stood to the side as Lena sat next to Eleanor on the bed. "Now, close your eyes and when you awake you shall no longer have worries of death," Lena said softly as she neared Eleanor"s face. She blinked when Eleanor"s eyes were closed and her fangs were prominent. I watched the husband as my love bit his, then Lena pulled back, carefully wiping the blood from her lips and Eleanor"s neck. "Now, we wait," she said kindly as Eleanor slipped off and her husband approached her. He sat by her side with one hand holding hers and the other on her extended stomach. We waited a few hours and as Eleanor took her last breath, he looked at Lena and I with a look of desperation. Lena raised her hand to him, "Wait, her mortality must die for her to be immortal," Lena said softly.
"What do you mean? She has to die? She died! She"s dead! And you killed her!" he yelled and rose up, walking around the bed to Lena.
I stood and put myself between him and Lena. "Patience," Lena said in her sweet voice. "She will return to us."
"Listen to her," I said sternly. At my glare, he stopped. I could see the tears in his eyes as he thought that Eleanor was gone.
Suddenly, Eleanor gasped and we all turned to her. Her fangs pushed her lips out and her color was rich. She looked healthy. "Oh, thank G.o.d!" her husband exclaimed as he fell by her side again. He looked into her face and her eyes fluttered open.
"Tell yourself that everything is as it should be and close your eyes," Lena explained gently.
Eleanor did just that and her fangs receded and her eyes returned to their normal blue. She looked around at her husband, who was now weeping like a child, then to Lena and whispered, "Thank you."
I was touched by the interaction between Eleanor, her husband and Lena. It has been quite some time since I have seen such compa.s.sion and grat.i.tude. I"ve been a warrior for far too long to remember such things.
After a few months, Eleanor gave birth to a boy. Lena helped deliver the child and he had been born in the early hours of the morning. Eleanor did well and he came out healthy and bright eyed. I had been in the living room when Lena came out to introduce the little bundle to his father. I have discovered that I still love children and I asked to hold him. As I did, I smelled it. I lifted his little hand to my nose and summoned the Kethra within me. With my overly keen sense of smell, I breathed in the little one"s scent and smelled the Kethra blood that now resides in his veins. I didn"t understand how or why this child had our blood in him and was still alive. He was a boy, to grow to be a man. Our blood kills men. But I do know now.
When we got home that night, I asked Ares, as I meditated, what this meant. He appeared and gave me a scroll that was written in Latin, telling me it was from Apollo. It said:
It took me a few days to translate it but with Leon"s help, we did, once translated it says; "The last Kethra and The Immune shall meet and fall in love. He will then become the first male Kethra in existence and together, they shall conceive a child, the first of full blood Kethra stature. And her first cries into the world shall bring an end to the age of the vampire."
Not understanding exactly what it all meant, I called Ares again. But Apollo came. The way he explained it is a man in Eleanor"s bloodline shall be The immune. Immune means that he is immune to the death that Kethra blood should have on him being a man. That is why Eleanor"s son has Kethra blood but is still alive. It"s protecting him!

I explained this part to Lena and we went to Eleanor. Once we explained what was different about her son, Eleanor and her husband decided to name him Adam, the first. He is the first, the first immune who shall pa.s.s on the immune trait to his sons someday, who will then pa.s.s it to their sons and on until one day there will be one that I am destined to love, another first, the first Kethra man. I just hope that I am ready when that day comes.
