Destiny Demons

Chapter 8

1382

Oh, dear G.o.ddess, please help me. He has taken everything from me! First, five years ago, I watched him die at the hands of a vampire, a harlot in my father"s garden. I, being with child, went out to an old friend"s cottage in the western forests beyond the kingdom. She was married to a wonderful man who loved her dearly.

I remember how Ira and I met many years ago when her mother had been my seamstress. When, her mother died, she and I grew close as we were both motherless daughters trying to be ladies. She met a man named Rupert and married him, moving out to the forest where she seemed very happy.

In seeing me, she hugged me telling me that she had heard that I had died. I sat down and explained what had happened and that I was now an unmarried woman, no longer a princess, who was also with child. She seemed delighted at the news and offered to raise my child as her own. As hers and Rupert"s child he would not be deemed a b.a.s.t.a.r.d as he would if I were to keep him. So I agreed.

I stayed until well after Darin had been born until one day Rupert came in from going to town and informed us that the King, my Dah, had died. I left immediately for the castle, not knowing what I was going to do. I arrived that day and sneaked into the royal crypt that my father had been placed in. I used the cover of night to enter unseen. I lit a candle and approached my Dah"s frail looking body. He had lost weight, due to my pa.s.sing, I presumed. I fell to my knees next to him and held his cold hand. He looked peaceful and rested as he lay there.

I finally rose to my feet and thought I saw him move. I froze as terror possessed me. Hastily, I examined his neck to see the mark. My Dah had not simply died, he had been bitten. Bitten by a vampire. Did that wh.o.r.e find a way to my Dah? Then, it occurred to me the one person that very well could have gotten close enough. Leonidas.

Suddenly, a growl came from my Dah"s throat and his eyes opened. But instead of the gentle green eyes I had always found such comfort in, they were deep black. I stepped back realizing the crushing weight of this pressing in on me. I watched as he sat up and turned to me. "Dah!" I screamed and recognition washed over his face.

"Drusilla?" he whispered.

The door to the crypt opened and I could see two figures walk in. A moment later my eyes made them out. It was the wh.o.r.e, with her arm locked in Leonidas". But it wasn"t Leonidas anymore. This was a vampire; the stench of his blood hit me like a ton of mortar.

He looked into my face and pulled away from her. Deidre was her name. Deidre! She pulled him back to her. "Angelos, Baby, she was the one who left you there to die, my love! Why go to her now?" Deidre sneered.

"Liar!" I nearly screeched. "You bit him and left when you saw me. If I could have saved you, Leon, I would have but," I stopped, watching his face fill with anger.

"Leonidas died that night as he watched the woman he loved and lost run into the night. Deidre was the one who was there when, I, Angelos, woke up." He sneered at me.

"Angelos is dead! You were there when they told us." I turned and saw my Da standing, looking at all of us. "I"m sorry, I left. I was bitten by a woman, turned into a Kethra. I wanted to tell you, Leon. I waited in our secret place every night hoping that you would come so that I could explain what had happened I wanted you to…"

"No!" he shouted and his voice boomed in the crypt. "You lie. You ran. Left me. Left me to die. Deidre saved me, taking my pain and suffering. Giving me freedom. Freedom, I granted to your father. I took his pain. I took his suffering so that he could finally be free. Free from you!"

At that, I realized that I had lost Leonidas for good. He was a vampire and he had given into the evil that is a vampire. I turned to look at Dah.

"Is this how you feel? Do you hate me? Are you free from me now?" hope lined my voice. I watched my Da as he a.n.a.lyzed his feelings.

"Your Highness, to free yourself, all you need to do is kill her. You have the strength now. Know that she is no longer your daughter but a demon." Leonidas spat at me. "Show him what you are, now!"

I blinked not realizing what it was that I was even thinking. My fangs came out and I looked at my Da. I watched as confusion was replaced by fear then rage. "Monster!" he screamed and lunged at me. The crypt door closed again and Leonidas was gone. I managed to avoid Da. He lunged at me again and I caught him in midair, slamming him onto the floor. He hissed at me as I tried to explain that I wasn"t the monster. Leonidas was.

Dah hissed at me again and I found the royal sword that was placed with Da. He lunged at me yet again and I knew what had to be done. I was a vampire hunter and he was a vampire. He would go on to kill people in order to survive. As he was approaching me, I swung the sword with all my might and watched as my Dah"s body fell before me and his head at the other side of the room. I retrieved it and placed his head and body together. I took the candle that I had lit and set my Da ablaze. "I"m sorry," I whispered as I left and disappeared into the darkness. For the last five years, I have been chasing Leonidas and Deidre. I have always been one step behind them finding scores of vampire in their wake. Many of which I knew and loved. The entire royal family is dead, the servants, maids and security at the castle, gone, most of the kingdom.

But none has hurt me as much as last night. After months of following them, I found myself here, at Ira and Rupert"s. I entered the house to find them both dead on the floor. I flew into Darin"s room to find four vampire waiting for me. Two grabbed my arms and held me as Deidre flaunted her power over, Leonidas, whom she called Angelos.

Angelos stood by the open window holding my now five year old son. His arm was wrapped around his chest as his other hand stroked his hair.

"Good, you"re here. I was hoping you could see this. You think I am a monster?"

"You are!" I spat.

"Then let me show you what a monster does." I watched in horror as he sunk his teeth into our son"s neck. I watched the color leave my son"s face. I could hear the pain in his little scream and the silence that followed. The life gone from his eyes and Leonidas just threw his little body to the floor. "Now, you can call me a monster." He said with a blood colored smile.

Then they were gone, I would have followed but I couldn"t. I crawled to Darin and held him in my arms. I cried and cried until the sun rose in the eastern sky. I lifted him up and moved everyone out into the clearing near their home. I built a large pyre with their firewood and lifted them all onto the pyre. As I laid my son down, I could hear the growl deep within his throat. Tears flowed down my cheeks as I brought an end to the three of them.

As I set the pyre ablaze, I vowed to kill Leonidas. And I will, even if it"s the last thing I do. He will pay for this. G.o.ddess, give me the strength to do as I must.
