"Where are we going, Josh?" Abby asked. I had blindfolded her before we left the house. I had some surprises in store for her. "Josh?" she said, a bit more a.s.sertively this time."You"ll see. If I tell you now, then it wouldn"t be a surprise, would it?" I answered her. My own excitement was getting to me. I had been doing a lot of prepping for this trip and now I could barely keep myself still. I kept catching myself pressing a little harder on the accelerator.
As I drove my mind wandered to her dreams and how they were beginning to turn into full short stories. I kept wondering why they were doing so. Was it her imagination doing this? Or something else? I had been contemplating it for a while now. I knew she had just had another dream the night before because she was writing this morning when I came down for breakfast. Her hair was even down and still a mess. She hadn"t even cooked breakfast like she normally does.
We finally arrived and I chimed to her, "We"re here, Babe. But don"t be peeking now." I opened my door and began to get out. I closed it quickly and hurried around the front of the car. I opened her door and helped her out of the car.
She took a deep breath and I knew she was about to ask, though I let her ask. "Where are we?"
"Where do you think?" I spoke softly from behind her. "You tell me." I took off her blindfold and the light seemed to overwhelm her eyes.
She blinked her eyes trying to allow them to adjust, I think. I knew that the beach had always been her favorite place to be so that is where I had brought her today. I knew that I had done well because she jumped for joy and in her sweetest voice looked at me and said, "A romantic day at the beach." She looked at me over her shoulder and I caught those stunning blue eyes and couldn"t seem to pull my eyes away from them.
"Yeah, but that"s not all. Look." And I pointed to a sail boat that was tied at the end of the pier. I continued by telling her, "Bobby told me that we could borrow it for the day if you wanted."
Bobby was my boss and he was quite wealthy. He adored my Abby and knew that this would make her happy. And in his eyes, he would do anything to please her. I had mentioned to Mitch.e.l.l a few days ago that Abby liked going sailing and I was planning a special outing for her. Bobby had heard the conversation and told me to wait a minute then disappeared into his office. He emerged a moment later and threw me the keys. "Take care of her and send Abby my regards.
I watched as her eyes lit up like a child seeing her presents on Christmas morning. "Really?!" she shrieked and continued to jump up and down.
I nodded to her and she turned back around to look at the boat again. For a moment, I watched her in her excitement and caught a glimpse of shift in her dark brown hair. I thought I had seen it flash from brown to white then back to brown. I blinked to see if I had actually seen it happen or if I could see it again. But nothing happened, it remained deep brown.
"So let"s go!" she yelled and grabbed my hand. She dragged me toward the pier, bouncing as she walked down the pier with a smile on her face. I walked behind her, watching her, laughing to myself about how silly she acted when she got happy. Then it happened again. Her beautiful, chestnut ponytail flashed white then back to brown. I stopped for a moment and rubbed my hands over my eyes. I squeezed the bridge of my nose asking myself, "What is going on?"
I couldn"t fathom an explanation before she chimed, "Well, come on you silly-wily. What are you waiting for? Let"s test out our sea legs!" She childishly jumped from the pier onto the deck of the boat. A smile crossed my face as my eyes met hers.
"I"m coming, Sweetheart. I"m coming." I replied as I began to untie the ropes from the pier. I pounced up on the deck, and stood next to her. She was standing tall behind the helm with a devious smile on her face. "So where to, Captain?" I asked playfully.
"Well, for starters we have to raise the sails, you goofy. Then thata way!" She pointed out toward the open sea.
"Ma"am, yes ma"am." I stood tall and saluted her like a true sailor would but with a smile on my face. I walked over with her to help her hoist the sails up. Before long we were on our way. The waves splashed the sides of the boat as it cut through the water.
"So, I may be captain, but you are my navigator. So you tell me, Mister Navigator. Where to?"
"Well, Bobby told me of this little island outside the cove." I patted my pockets looking for the piece of paper that he had written the coordinates on. I found it in my back pocket and handed them to her. "Here, Captain. This is my recommendation, a quiet, secluded, romantic island, oasis for the two of us." I stepped behind her and slid my arms around her waist as I spoke. I kissed her bare shoulder and rubbed her stomach as I waited for her reply.

"Oh!" she said and smiled coyly, the same smile that always won her arguments with me. "I see. Then that is where we shall go." She took a look at the charts and plotted our course. She had read about sailing and nautical charts, so that if she ever had the chance to sail, as she did now, she could sail anywhere. That was one of the many things I loved about my endearing wife. She was always prepared when it came to knowledge.
I sat off to the side and watched her glow with joy as she steered the boat through the cove with precision. Shortly we were coming to the open sea. I kept watching her and I could feel my heart throbbing with pride of making her so happy.
"Why are you staring at me, Joshua Caleb? You are freaking me out!" She said seriously yet with playfulness in her voice. "I can feel your eyes on me!" she turned and looked at him. "We"re almost there. But then, what?
"Well, I was thinking lunch." I answered, knowing she would be hungry.
"And how exactly are we going to have lunch? We didn"t grab anything out of the car. Unless you already had everything planned," she remarked with my favorite smile on her face. She turned completely toward me and leaned against the helm. She looked at me with an alluring stance. "What all did you have planned, Joshua Caleb?"
"Well," I began as I lifted myself off of the seat and strolled toward her. "First we anchor here. Then swim to sh.o.r.e if you like." She quickly kissed my lips and turned back to the compa.s.s. She began to turn down the sails so we could anchor out. "Or if you don"t want to swim, we could always take the raft instead," I said smiling.
"No," Abby began as she started unb.u.t.toning her blouse. "We could always use the exercise," her coy smile suggesting her joke. I turned and walked to a basket nearby and pulled out some clothes that I had carefully packed without her knowing. There were two towels, my swim trunks and a bikini. "Oh, you did have everything planned, didn"t you?"
"You know it. Always be prepared," I said with a big smile on my face. She knew that I was always prepared in some way or another. "Would you like a bathing suit? Or would you rather skinny dip?" I raised and lowered my eyebrows provocatively.
"Ah, you would like to see me skinny dip, wouldn"t you? You little scamp, you," Abby said playfully as she provocatively pressed herself against me. "But yes, I would like my bathing suit. It IS broad daylight, I just figured you had everything prepared, like you always do."
I smiled at her and wrapped my arms around her. "And you were right," I answered her gleefully. I handed her bikini to her and began to unb.u.t.ton my pants.
Once we were changed, I eased a raft into the water and carefully set the basket with our lunch in it. I put our clothes in with our towels to keep them dry. Abby lowered the ladder from the side of the boat to ensure that we wouldn"t be stranded in the water upon our return. I watched as Abby ran full sprint off the front of the boat in a perfect swan dive that made only a small splash.
A few seconds later she emerged from behind me, I had already lowered myself into the water next to the boat and I jumped at the shock of her sudden emerge from the water. She looked at me with what seemed like an aquatic blue eye and a forest green eye. I found myself gazing into them with wonder until she blinked and her eyes returned to their normal gray blue.
