The village w.a.n.g Yao lived in was neither too big nor too small. Gossip always traveled fast inside the village. Having a Tibetan Mastiff as a pet was quite unusual for the villagers, which could attract a lot of attention.
The Tibetan Mastiff was obviously not from the village.
“Help!” w.a.n.g Yao suddenly heard someone screaming.
“Go and check what happened,” said w.a.n.g Fenghua.
“Okay,” said w.a.n.g Yao.
He found a wooden stick at home and went out with it. He made sure the front door was locked before he and his father went out.
The two of them walked towards where scream was. They saw a group of people standing on the street, then someone carrying an injured man into a vehicle, which went off in a hurry.
“What happened?” asked one of the villagers.
“Someone was bitten by a dog,” said another villager.
“A dog? Really?” said an elderly woman in surprise.
“Yes. It seemed to be a very big dog. The guy got bitten on his neck,” said a man with gla.s.ses.
A big dog hurting people…maybe it’s the Tibetan Mastiff I saw! thought w.a.n.g Yao.
w.a.n.g Yao looked towards his home.
“Dad, I think we should go home.” Although w.a.n.g Yao had locked the door, he was concerned about his mother and sister’s safety.
“Okay,” agreed his father.
w.a.n.g Yao and his father went home to tell his mother and sister what happened in the village.
“A Tibetan Mastiff?” w.a.n.g Ru was shocked. “How could someone in the village have such a fierce animal?”
“Is it that fierce and savage?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“Yes. One Tibetan Mastiff could fight three wolves!” said w.a.n.g Ru.
“Right! It could also fight a tiger or a lion!” laughed w.a.n.g Yao.
“What? Are you guys really talking about a dog?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“Mom, I’m kidding. Let alone lions and tigers, no dog in the world could even fight the local wolves. But the Tibetan Mastiff is quite fierce and very protective of its territory. It is not hard for it to take down a strong adult. I saw the dog. It’s huge, like a calf,” said w.a.n.g Yao.
“How did the dog come to our village?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“Not sure,” said w.a.n.g Yao.
The villagers heard a dog barking from time to time overnight.
w.a.n.g Yao left home after breakfast the next morning. As soon as he left home, he saw a few villages on the street, all of whom held a stick in their hands.
What is going on?
“Attention everyone!”
Suddenly the broadcast speaker of the village, which hadn’t been used for ages was turned on.
After listening to the announcement of the village committee, w.a.n.g Yao got to know that three people in the village were injured by the Tibetan Mastiff. The large dog entered another household and bit a child this morning. The villagers he saw on the street were going to find the Tibetan Mastiff at large.
“d.a.m.n! Where the h.e.l.l is that dog?” said the leader of the group. He was furious about what happened. He just wanted to find the dog and chop it into pieces. The Tibetan Mastiff ran into his house last night and bit one of his relatives.
“Yao, you should go home. Didn’t you hear the announcement?” someone recognized w.a.n.g Yao and asked him to go home.
“I know. I’ll go home soon,” said w.a.n.g Yao with a smile.
After the group of villagers was out of his sight, w.a.n.g Yao continued to walk towards Nanshan hill. On his way, he received a call from his family asking him not to walk up to the hill by himself. His mother sounded very determined on the phone, so w.a.n.g Yao had to go home.
He didn’t hear any more announcements in the morning, and less dog barking. Maybe the Tibetan Mastiff had left the village.
It should be safe now, thought w.a.n.g Yao.
w.a.n.g Yao decided to go to Nanshan hill after lunch.
“What if the mad dog is still somewhere around here?” Zhang Xiuying still didn’t want her son to leave home.
“I’ll take a stick with me,” said w.a.n.g Yao.
“What is the use of a stick? Do you know how to beat a dog?” said Zhang Xiuying.
“I suppose so. Look, Mom!” w.a.n.g Yao picked up a stone and used his Qi to break the stone into several pieces.
“Oh my G.o.d!” Zhang Xiuying was shocked.
“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me,” said w.a.n.g Yao.
w.a.n.g Yao eventually took a bamboo pole out of his home and walked towards Nanshan hill.
What is this?
w.a.n.g Yao stopped at the foot of the hill and bent down to have a look at the ground.
He found marks of blood on the ground. The blood was dry.
How come there is blood here?
He continued to walk and saw similar blood marks on the ground.
Could it be from the Tibetan Mastiff? w.a.n.g Yao sped up.
w.a.n.g Yao followed the pathway on the hills and soon he arrived at Nanshan hill.
Woof! Woof! Woof! He heard San Xian barking from a distance.
What’s happening?
w.a.n.g Yao sped up but he suddenly stopped halfway.
What is it?
He saw a black dog as big as a calf lying on the ground. It had a number of injuries on its body, which was covered with blood. It was exactly the same Tibetan Mastiff which injured several people in the village.
The body of the Tibetan Mastiff was stiff but w.a.n.g Yao was still cautious when approaching it. Then, he found that the dog was as dead as a dodo bird. The blood underneath its body wasn’t completely dry. The injuries that took its life were on its throat and belly; there was a big cut on its belly.
What killed the Tibetan Mastiff? Some unknown fierce animal on Nanshan hill? It can’t be! I’ve been on and off Nanshan hill for years and have never been aware of any wild and fierce animals. The only fierce animal should be Da Xia. But it should be considered a fierce bird.
When w.a.n.g Yao was wondering what kill the Tibetan Mastiff, San Xian ran towards him.
“What happened to you?” said w.a.n.g Yao.
w.a.n.g Yao found San Xian’s fur was messy as he had a close look at the dog. Part of his fur had been ripped out, and he had a trace of blood next to his mouth. He was excited to see w.a.n.g Yao and shook his tail.
Wait! w.a.n.g Yao took a close look at San Xian and turned around to check the Tibetan Mastiff on the ground. He had a guess.
“Did you kill the Tibetan Mastiff?” asked w.a.n.g Yao.
Woof! Woof! San Xian barked twice and pointed towards the tree with his paw.
“I see, not just you—Da Xia too?” said w.a.n.g Yao.
Woof! Woof!
“Good boy!” w.a.n.g Yao patted San Xian on his back. San Xian was even less than half size of the Tibetan Mastiff. It was truly impressive that he and the Da Xia could kill the Tibetan Mastiff.
But the thing is, why would the Tibetan Mastiff die at the foot of Nanshan hill?
