Vance was leading Aker, Sarah and her mom over to the merchant district to meet with the family that had made arrangements for Aker"s group.Previously Aker had cured a wealthy family who was suffering from a generational blood disease. While the cure that Aker provided wouldn"t correct the symptoms that the older generation suffered from it would allow the younger generation to grow more normally and prevent it from being pa.s.sed along to the next generation.
The family that suffered the blood disease which had caused this merchant family to suffer from an extreme small stature was overjoyed as the younger children in the family began to surpa.s.s the adults in size. After the countless "famous" doctors that the family had gone to in order to solve their family"s problem, who would have ever guessed that a small boy on an insignificant planet who was locked away would be the one to cure them.
When Vance had heard the details from the family head Thomas Parvus of the Parvus merchant family about their planets location he had immediately began planning with Thomas to be the destination of their escape. Thomas had already arranged for Aker"s identification and credentials which he would need prior to joining the military.
What made the Parvus family a perfect opportunity for Vance was that the planet that Parvus family was primarily located on was one of the dozen forward most disputed planets of the Underground Empires war. Both the Fenlon and the Underground Empire were fighting desperately at this location due to the mining operations of the moons in the solar system that were vastly rich in resources.
As Aker saw the small of stature man walk up with a smile on his face his memory came flooding back. He could distinctly remember this man and his young daughter and son who were roughly Aker"s age. At the time the daughter and son were both incredibly under developed, but as Aker looked at them now, he couldn"t tell the difference between them and a normal 11-12-year-old.
Thomas had sent someone over to learn how to make the medicine that could cure the blood disease of the Parvus family, and at the time Aker showed that doctor without holding anything back. At the time, the person who came and learned from Aker wanted to come back and work in the same medical clinic inside The Pit with Aker. Thomas wouldn"t allow it and just promised the doctor that in the future he would have an opportunity to work with Aker. This excited that doctor so much that he was known to brag to his friends in the Parvus family that in the future he would be able to work side by side with the one who cured the family disease. As for exactly who their family"s benefactor was and the name of the doctor, this was information that was only known by Thomas, his two children and that doctor. This was a closely guarded secret as they didn"t want any clues to slip out indicating that Aker was from The Pits.
Most people would look at someone who bragged about being able to work with someone like they were an idiot, but not the family members of the Parvus family. As far as they were concerned Aker"s grace and elegance couldn"t be compared too. He was the one who had removed the stain on the family that had lasted generations and would finally allow for their children to be rid of the curse that had plagued them.

Who within the Parvus family wasn"t embarra.s.sed and distraught over their tiny stature? Who didn"t lament the way their family was looked down on because of their size? In order to succeed in this world of dragons and tigers the Parvus family had to be twice as ruthless and cutthroat as their compet.i.tors. This was a side that of the family that Thomas would like to try and hide from Aker, no matter what he didn"t want Aker to develop a bad impression of his Parvus family. It was a decision that the countless family members within the Parvus family would agree with. Despite the Parvus family"s reputation for cruelness to their enemy they were also known as extremely loyal and truehearted to their friends and business partners. This contrasting reputation is what has allowed the Parvus family to succeed as merchants.
"Welcome Young Aker to our Parvus family home." Thomas was standing waiting for Aker along with dozens of other smiling faces as they entered the merchant area. Aker along with the son and daughter of Thomas could also see that doctor he taught the cure too, the doctor was breathing heavily, his bones were fighting to leave his skin as he watched Aker approach.
"Thanks so much for the greeting but you didn"t have to bother so many people to come out." As Aker spoke and looked at the excited faces of the dozens of people he felt out of place. He was happy to see so many people excited to see him but it felt out of place and embarra.s.sing.
"Nonsense, this is hardly a reception at all. Vance had already relayed to us to keep it to a minimum otherwise there would be no less than several hundred people here to catch a glimpse of our family"s benefactor. In order to choose the family members that could directly come and greet you today we held a big family merchant compet.i.tion that included all of our sub division stores as well. Thousands and thousands of family members were eager to win a spot, the ones before you are the ones that had had won the compet.i.tion. The whole compet.i.tion lasted a quarter and resulted in the most profitable quarter in the family"s history, in other words you are again our benefactor, without you everyone wouldn"t have been so motivated." Thomas smile with a genuine grin on his face. If anyone else was to see this they would be floored. Thomas was known as a man who smile, but as a compet.i.tor if you saw him smile it meant that disaster had already reached you and only doom awaited. Outside of his immediate family members, Aker may be the only person to ever see Thomas genuinely smile.
Aker stared at the dozens of family members present with a wryly smile on his face not knowing what to say. How could Aker possibly understand his impact on the Parvus family? From the highest ranked Thomas to the lowest ranked member in the family each of them viewed Aker as a savior and benefactor. Everyone in the family was desperate to get close to and make a good impression on Aker for several reasons.
Firstly, if someone is able to get Aker"s acknowledgment or even better befriend him, their status within the family would instantly be raised. Secondly, anyone who was capable of curing the blood disease of the Parvus family would certainly make a name for themselves in the future. How much money did the Parvus family have? How rich was their family? They operated in dozens of empires and on countless of planets and despite all of their resources and reach they couldn"t find a cure before Aker.
As Thomas led the four back to his home he spoke with Vance and Aker. Sarah and her mother just quietly followed along not daring to say a word. Sarah might not understand who Thomas was but Sarah"s mom certainly knew. She fought as hard as she could to contain her surprise and shock as they strolled towards Thomas"s house, multiple times she had tried to come up with an excuse to leave but Sarah wasn"t about to let that happen.
Sarah might not understand who this Thomas person was exactly but she knew he was important just by his greeting to them. When the four of them walked up Thomas had welcomed them as he stood at the entrance to the merchant market and exclaimed "welcome to my home" indicating that the entire merchant market here belonged to him.
Sarah who grew up on the streets and in the slums noticed the small details as they walked towards Thomas"s house, there wasn"t a single person on the road as they walked. Only someone with exorbitant power could do what Thomas was doing. As they walked Sarah couldn"t help but look over at Aker "How is it someone who was riding on the garbage can with us could be greeted by such a person? Not only did they come and personally greet Aker but they even had a family compet.i.tion for the right to greet him. They shut down the entire merchant market and didn"t allow anyone to see them as they walked." Sarah"s thoughts were trying to understand the situation as she tried over and over to better grasp who Aker was and why everyone was treating him like a savior.
What Sarah didn"t know was that the merchant market was shut down and everyone was cleared away so that they could walk to Thomas"s house without anyone seeing. Of course, the Parvus family was under constant observation by their compet.i.tors, and because they didn"t want someone to see Aker and Vance going to their home the only option was to shut down the merchant market and clear everyone away. To accomplish this Thomas had spent an incredible amount of resources and effort but from the perspective of his family it was worth it.
Why would Thomas go through so much trouble? Thomas also helped in the escape of Aker and this was part of the plan as well. They would slip Aker into the Parvus family and give him an ident.i.ty which he could use without any concerns. In reality getting Aker an established ident.i.ty would be just as hard as getting him out of The Pit. Thankfully with the resources and capabilities of the Parvus family it would be easy, but they still needed Aker in Thomas"s mansion to finish the process.
After an incredibly long walk of dozens of kilometers they finally arrived at Thomas"s estate. As Aker looked out, he found it ridiculous that someone could call what he was seeing "home". Thomas"s home looked more like a city as his estate was half a dozen kilometers in size.
As Aker"s eyes took in the estate, he was floored by the fact that it was so immaculate and flawless. The flowers, the forestry, the herbs, the ambiance, the entire environment was picturesque and perfect. It created atmosphere of grandeur and brilliance; Aker had never seen anything he could even compare it to. At this moment Aker was lamenting that Sampson wasn"t here to enjoy the scenery with him, this was a sight that Sampson could truly appreciate. Aker would have enjoyed hearing Sampson"s thoughts and critiques of Thomas"s estate.
Surprisingly as Aker took in the estate what he found confusing and oxymoronic was that the buildings and doors seemed oversized. The blood disease that Aker had cured caused the Parvus family to suffer a small stature and in order to compensate the Parvus family oversized everything.
Thomas led Aker and Vance into his private study and had the dozens of family members as well as Sarah and her mom wait together. These family members had been wondering who Sarah and her mom were the entire time and had been eyeballing them since they first saw them so this was a perfect opportunity for them. There was no doubting that everyone in the Parvus family held Aker up on a pedestal, but that didn"t mean they weren"t still members of the Parvus family. When an opportunity to gain was in front of a Parvus it would be a sin not to take it, this was the family motto and it was a motto that all family members held close to their hearts.
While Sarah and her mom were busy being entertained and being grilled, Aker and Vance stood before Thomas who had a book out. This book is a registry of the family and would const.i.tute proof of each family member. All ent.i.tled families maintained these books and they were considered family secrets. If someone"s name and DNA was in the book it was absolute and indisputable proof that they were a member of that family, it was beyond questioning. This book was the reason that Thomas had to clear the merchant market and the reason that Aker and Vance had to come to him and couldn"t take care of their ident.i.ties somewhere else.
No family would move their family book for fear that something would happen to it. There was an unwritten rule between families that they would not damage, steal, or affect another families book even if the families had life and death grudges. This agreement was in place primarily because no family wanted to risk the retribution of someone damaging or stealing their own family books. That didn"t mean that there weren"t people out there who wouldn"t love to steal the book and hold it hostage. For some n.o.ble families they may even go so far as to trade their whole family"s wealth to get it back.
As a loyalty incentive some families encouraged their subordinates with the family book as a possible reward. A subordinate in service of the family could also become members of that family with meritorious service. While they wouldn"t necessarily take on the family name they would be registered in the family book which would make them legitimate members of that family.
Because of this incentive it is common practice to skip pages in the family books and leave them open so that names of faithful and honored subordinates could be added effectively postdating the family member. If a subordinate managed to serve the family earning their name into the book then their entire family line would also be added, so most family books would date the subordinate in the book to the proper generation and then add their kids to the proper generation and so on.
Thomas explained to Aker the purpose of the book as Aker nodded his head in agreement indicating that he understood what Thomas was explaining which was pleasing for Thomas. For Thomas one of his pet peeves was having to repeat himself. There had been times in the past that Thomas walked away from potentially huge deals only because the person he was talking to caused Thomas to repeat himself several times.
After Aker was added to the book, he would basically be given the background of a family member of the Parvus family. As Thomas explained he indicated that all of the information was already filled out and that the only action left was for Aker to put a drop of blood in the book to finish the registration. Aker nodded his in understanding indicating that they could proceed.
"Great, in that case we will take care of Vance first." Thomas said with a small grin and then he went to the page that had Vance Hunter in the book with his details. Vance had earned his place in the family as someone who had been providing security and protection for the family supporting them throughout multiple empires. He had personally saved countless of transports, products and people of the Parvus family, generated hundreds of millions in profits through his dealing capability and after twenty years of service he was being added to the family.
Thomas in the section of the book from Vance"s generation and on the page with Vance"s name and details had Vance put his finger on the spot which took a drop of blood for DNA recording.
After Vance was finished Thomas quickly flipped to the current generation and had Aker put his finger on the book without providing his reason for being added to the family book.
Of course Aker thought he was being added due providing the cure for the family, his contribution would literally change the entire family for every generation to come.
Once Aker was done, he looked to Thomas and asked "Does that make my name Aker Parvus?"
Aker who had listened to Thomas"s full explanation understood that those that were added to the book didn"t have to take the family name but for Aker who didn"t have a last name it seemed logical.
"Didn"t you read the details, here take a look." Thomas who had been hiding the book from Aker so he couldn"t read the details now opened it so Aker could see.
As Aker looked through the page, he finally found his name and details. As he looked it over his breathing came to stop as he held his breath not believing what he was seeing.
