"Who is this?" It was obvious that the person who was talking was irritated. Everyone fought over the position to monitor for calls as it was the easiest and most laid-back job on any given planet. While a great deal of planets and empires were hostile to each other there were a couple of universally agreed upon rules for the outer Eastern Universe.
Being lost in the vastness of s.p.a.ce or having a ship that stopped functioning was not impossible and that went from the lowest garbage can ships to the most extravagant X-10 galaxy cla.s.s ships, which were usually only allowed to be used by the most powerful and strongest of factions in the universe.
All planets would maintain an emergency line used for communication that anyone who traveled the stars would know. In dire circ.u.mstances and situations, you could contact the emergency line and there was a possibility that help would be available.
Obviously in a universe that fed on the weak there wasn"t a universal rule that stated that the planet that was beseeched for help must accommodate. That would be between the stranded and the planet, if the stranded ship could offer enough benefits to the planet they may a.s.sist. The rules only stated that they must have the line and they must have someone to answer.
This rule truly benefitted the wealthiest and strongest powers only while giving those weak and despondent people the belief that those in power cared. In order to move resources out to offer a.s.sistance only extreme wealth and power could move them. So, while it seemed to be help for everyone, those who regularly traveled through s.p.a.ce knew better than to believe it.
That"s the reason on all planets the job of monitoring the emergency line was the easiest, no one ever actually bothered to use it. If someone did it was because they had the resources and power to force a planet to act.
That"s why when Barth answered the emergency line, he was licking his lips, his antic.i.p.ation shot through the roof. He had been working this line for almost a decade and no one had ever called for a.s.sistance in the entire ten years. For him it didn"t matter because he got paid the same either way and at the end of the day it only took one "big fish" to make all the bribing and favors he did to get the position worth it.
Finally, after a decade his big fish called in for help so when he answered "This is the Venicular Planet emergency a.s.sistance, how much are you offering?" he was beside himself. No matter what he would be able to force the callers to offer him something in the form of compensation. At the end of the day these people were stuck and he was their only life line, his greedy hands rubbed together as he got lost in his thoughts of all the benefits he was about to s.n.a.t.c.h.
"I"m not offering anything, why would I offer you anything...." Vance tightened his fist as he answered this greedy b.a.s.t.a.r.d. He was about to lay into whoever answered the emergency line when Cap stepped in.
It was Cap who had asked Vance to make the call, she hadn"t thought anything of it when she threw it out there. It was only as she heard him losing his temper that she realized that he probably didn"t know about the emergency lines and how they operated.
Cap was fully aware that Vance had run around the stars when he was younger and so she thought he would be able to handle the call relatively easily. Little did she know that despite the fact that he was traveling the stars he was doing the types of jobs he would never want to draw attention to. Since no one doing Vance"s line of work would ever request a.s.sistance they never bothered to learn the rules.
How did they handle situations where someone had issues in s.p.a.ce? They would have regular routes for smuggling and other such stuff and if they didn"t reach their destination at a specific time someone would go and find them, or they would travel in two"s or three"s as a warning against attacking.
Cap jumped on the line to an irritated Barth who shouted "Who is this" just as she took over. Maintaining her calm Cap responded back gently "We would like to request your a.s.sistance; we were attacked by the Nefarious Four pirates and...."
"We can"t help you, that"s your problem. If the Nefarious Four pirates attacked you then there is nothing left for you to trade. The fact that you could walk away with your life should be considered enough. Don"t call the emergency line unless you have something to offer in the future, not everyone is as nice as this one."
Barth had interrupted Cap before she had a chance to explain the situation with the Nefarious Four. The Nefarious Four had been running amok in the universe for far too long and as such it wasn"t a surprise that someone was attacked, robbed and stranded, but what did that have to do with Barth and Venicular?
"If you don"t pick up, I will personally head to your planet and put my boot through your head." Vance who had listened off to the side was fuming at the disregard that Barth had shown Cap. Cap had been gentle and polite, as Barth disconnected from Cap her pretty eyes and small nose scrunched up indicating her disapproval.
"Who the h.e.l.l do you think you are to threaten me! If you don"t apologize right now, I will send someone to you, but it won"t be to help, I will let them know that a hostile force is making demands or they will attack Venicular. On Venicular they would prefer to attack your ship rather than ask questions and figure out right from wrong."
Who did they think they were talking to Barth this way? Didn"t this person know that their life and death were in Barth"s hands right at this moment?
"Go ahead and send them over, let"s see if it"s you or me that ends up apologizing." Vance who had laid low for years and felt squashed underfoot was now even being talked down to by some n.o.body who only answered desperate people and tried to extort money out of them.
Just as Barth was getting ready to yell back and hang up the commander for Venicular Communications Center walked by and heard the commotion.
Hearing Barth getting yelled at and challenged his mouth turned down and walked over to find out what happened. Asking Barth, he discovered that Vance"s ship was attacked by the Nefarious Four and they were now stranded and needed a.s.sistance.
"Sir, this is Daylon Johnston Commander of the Venicular Communications Center, we appreciate your situation, however we are not in a position to render any aid. All support ships are currently out and won"t be available for several months. It would be best if you seek alternative means." This Commander Daylon was known as a conniving and good political player. He had worked his way to the position of Commander by kissing the right behinds, bribing the right hands, and bowing to the right feet. He was well known as one who would say one thing and do another, a jump in your face and yell kind of person he was not. He spoke elegantly, gently and with much bravado while telling you to go and fly a kite.
"What are you talking about, we don"t need your a.s.sistance." Vance"s confused voice stopped Daylon"s train of thought and caused him to look down at Barth asking with his eyes "didn"t you say they needed our help?".
"This line is for a.s.sistance, if you don"t need any a.s.sistance then why would you reach us on this line?" Daylon who was confused by the scenario blurted out.
"Because we were attacked by the Nefarious Four and..."
"You say you don"t need a.s.sistance but you admit you were attacked by that vile pirate group...." Daylon who interrupted Vance as he was explaining that they were attacked by the Nefarious Four was getting ready to admonish Vance when he was also interrupted.
"Would you just listen and stop interrupting. We were attacked by the Nefarious Four...but we killed them all, all four of the Nefarious Four are dead and their entire crew has been wiped out. We now have their four ships and all of their bodies and we want to collect the reward."
Finally, Vance was able to get the words out of his mouth without interruption.
"Impossible!" Both Barth and Daylon"s voices chimed in together. How could they possibly believe that the Nefarious Four who had caused countless deaths, wiped out numerous cities, and had been hunted by entire empires was killed by a single ship.
After verifying coordinates and some small tidbits of information Daylon rounded up a fleet to head to Vance. He had sent Barth home and told him that he wasn"t to tell anyone about the conversation he had. Daylon was planning on having Barth fired from the Communications Center and if he couldn"t keep his mouth shut, he would help him with that. As Barth left his hands were rubbing together so fast, he could break out in flames at any moment. Barth didn"t know that while he was excited at the amazing feat of his today Daylon was planning his demise.
Daylon had let his superiors know that it was he who answered the initial call, he had gracefully helped the caller and went out of his way to make sure that the ships and remains of the Nefarious Four were brought to Venicular even though Vance and his crew wanted to take it all elsewhere. The planet that brought forth the corpses of this crew and especially its ships and leaders would be heralded throughout the outer Eastern Universe. There was no shortage of people and empires who didn"t want to bask in the death of these men. Being able to bring this forward would bring a lot of honor and face to their small planet.
Vance had already explained the situation, that he had managed to kill the four and the process of defeating the pirates. He didn"t want the story of Aker defeating hundreds of pirates and killing the Nefarious Four single handedly getting out, it would draw to much attention and they were still on the run. Little did Vance know that there was a small boy he had saved who had witnessed the comical fight between Aker and the Nefarious Four.
As the people from Venicular sortied towards their ship Aker sat in his room contemplating on the battles he had just been through. During this fight he had gained new insights and inspirations, touched on an illusionary law, and battled the Nefarious Four who were all Source Core Metal magic fighters. Not to mention that prior to battling the Nefarious Four he had to travel from his room to the location where Vance was which had dozens and dozens of pirates in its path creating a trial blood bath ground to test Aker"s new resolve and insights.
Aker who was exhausted after his battles peered into his Peerless Body stats and seeing the change a feeling of satisfaction overwhelmed him. Aker who had just promoted to level ten in his Peerless Body after his last battle in The Pit had once again advanced as he had reached level eleven and was just a couple of thousand points from level twelve.
This was a ma.s.sive advancement for Aker who spent the better part of a year to advance from level seven to level eight while in The Pit. Just in the last few weeks he had already managed to advance three levels.
Peering over at his Skills his excitement welled as he caught a glimpse of the Skill points which now reflected an even thirty. Aker who had been contemplating how to allocate his points for a couple of weeks was now sure.
He had originally thought that since he would be traveling for a year there was no sense in using his skill points on improving his base stats in agility, strength and vitality. He wouldn"t need to increase his bodies base stats since he wouldn"t be fighting on the ship and should focus on just comprehension and mana which would give him the best long-term growth.
After today"s battle he couldn"t help but think back to his conversation with Vance when they stared down at the arena. At that time Vance asked Aker if he wanted to live a normal life or advance on the path of a magic fighter. Vance pointed out that no matter what in this cold and cruel universe trouble would always come and find you.
At the time Aker believed Vance but didn"t understand. How could we live in some far of place minding our own business and have trouble find us? That was Aker"s thoughts at the time, now he understood completely. They were simply traveling through the vastness of s.p.a.ce, millions of kilometers from anyone else and death and wickedness still found them. How could it not find them when they are only a couple of hundred kilometers from the heart of man?

With that in mind Aker began calling out his skills with the idea that he needed to use them all. Aker was aware that he was lucky in today"s fight. He would have struggled to fight any of the Nefarious Four and would have found it exceedingly difficult to kill any one of them much less all four by himself. He had used a sneak attack to kill the first one. This sneak attack had caused the second to attack without reason and caused him to lose his focus. The third leader of the Nefarious Four died because they under estimated Aker and turned his back to Aker"s fight and the last one died because he was in a complete state of denial.
If any of that hadn"t happened exactly the way it did then there would have been no way for Aker to kill them. Aker was certain however, through that fight that individually none of the Nefarious Four would have been able to kill him as well. He had spent so much time fighting Vance and had never gotten close to defeating him so Aker"s perspective had been skewed this entire time. In reality Aker discovered that his strength was somewhere between a Source Core Earth and Source Core Metal magic fighter. He wouldn"t be quite strong enough to defeat a Source Core Metal fighter on his own but he could defeat a Source Core Earth fighter if he gave it everything he had.
Thinking of how strong he would be once he broke through and became a Source Core magic fighter Aker checked his body and determined he still had a long way to go before his deep skin, muscles, organs and bones were fully saturated with nature particles. The biggest reason he was able to jump ranks and fight a Source Core Metal fighter was due to this deep absorption of nature particles so Aker felt his decision was right, he resolved again to continue down the path he had decided and would delay his advancement to Source Core fighter.
