Emperors War

Chapter 98

A throwing dart came flying out of Aker"s hand and struck the servant holding Sarah in the arm. As the throwing dart moved faster than the servant"s eyes were able to see, from the perspective of the servant as he was standing there mocking this kid who his master was going to punish a sudden wound inexplicably opened and he was suffering from intense pain.

Like a slippery fish Sarah moved away from the servant and was now out of harm"s way. She stood off to the side, her eyes never leaving Aker through the entire ordeal.

The others here may not understand how strong Aker was but the her who watched him fight against the pirate mob and then daily against Vance and Cap had a decent grasp of his strength. She wanted to see what he would do in this situation, she was antic.i.p.ating his every action.

She had been present when Vance spoke to Aker a couple of days back about the heart of man. As Sarah listened in from the side, she felt the conversation was a bit pointless, anyone who had lived any time in the universe would already understand these concepts.

Vance described how each planet had a planet lord which was generally a hereditary t.i.tle. The planet lord was the unquestioned ruler of that planet and all the planets resources and military would belong to them. Serving the planet lords were governors who were responsible for different regions on each planet. Beneath governors were city lords who managed a specific city and beneath city lords were officials who managed the day to day activities of the cities.

Outside of these groups there were powerful families, these powerful families could have military might such as the Drexler family Alex was from or they could come from wealthy merchants or specialized backgrounds. These specialized families could specialize in any number of skills but the most powerful tended to be blacksmithing, alchemy, potions, herbs, and formations as they could directly increase the strength of other families.

Of course, all planet lords fell under an empire and as such they served the King of each empire. No Empires King or Queen could confer or refer to themselves as Emperor or Empress and Vance didn"t bother to explain why.

From the highest n.o.ble families to the lowest officials they all considered themselves above the ma.s.ses. Because they were the ones with the strength and power the common people of the universe were obligated and fortunate to serve them.

These powers tended to glom together so by offending one you would offend all of them. To question them is to challenge them, to ignore them is an act of rebellion.

Sarah was watching Aker closely because she listened as Vance explained the hierarchy of the universe and the consequences of challenging that hierarchy. Sarah and Aker were not a part of that hierarchy and as such Aker"s actions were already paramount to a revolt.

Vance had explained to Aker that while they were building up strength and gaining experience, they needed to not do anything that caused them to go against the established order. Aker would join the military and gain experience and once he had earned enough merits they would decide on their next steps.

Aker who had understood what Vance was trying to convey when he spoke to Aker about their plans for the foreseeable future and how they would proceed didn"t want to cause a commotion.

Sarah heard the entire conversation and understood Vance"s warning to Aker. She also understood that Vance had told Aker to refrain himself and stay low profile, to not be the "nail with its head out", now was not the time for that. Vance had managed to sneak Aker out of The Pits and he didn"t want to draw attention to their actions. It"s the reason he didn"t allow Cap to make a fuss after defeating the pirates and the reason he allowed them to so easily be cheated with the reward. How could Vance, someone who was also destined to be a King be fooled by some minor character from some minor planet so easily?

Coming to Dilnara is about gaining experience for Aker, growing his talent and skills and exposing him to the realities of the universe.

Sarah had been practicing the sword on the ship diligently because she knew that her grandpa wouldn"t be able to pay for the cost of her and her moms trip to Dilnara. While Sarah was only nine, she had been forced to grow up early, her and her mom had a rough life and were always running.

Sarah"s mom had begged for her grandpa to allow for her and Sarah to come and live with him, and after months of Sarah"s mom begging he had finally agreed, however he was very reluctant.

Sarah had tried to talk her mom out of it, she wasn"t sure how much it cost to make the trip but she knew her and her mom didn"t have any money at all.

While catching a ride on a garbage can itself was cheap you still had to pay for your food and some other accommodations. Sarah"s mom didn"t have the money for the ticket much less the food for the two of them for six months and so Sarah"s grandpa agreed to pay, but he let Sarah"s mom know he was going to borrow the money. He did tell Sarah"s mom the consequences of not paying off the debt before they got there but he told her it would be fine; the interest was low and the amount for the two of them wasn"t something he couldn"t handle.

Sarah who had been raised by her mom in the slums didn"t trust anyone, she had spent a considerable time of her young life hustling just to survive. For her, the world was a dark and nasty place and all of the people in it were disgusting and untrustworthy except for her mom.

Sarah had been pondering on how she could deal with the situation once they got to Dilnara and that"s when the pirates attacked. Sarah watched the struggle in Aker"s eyes as he fought with himself yet in the end, he still saved her mom. It had never happened before, Sarah had never witnessed someone go against their own thoughts just to help her, which had a profound effect on her. Even though she was crying out for someone to help her, even though she was sitting on the floor crying hoping someone would come to the rescue, she never expected the rescue to come. It had always just been her and her mom until that day, she would act tough in front of people but when the world was collapsing down on her that day, she was still just a small girl.

She spent six months learning the sword from Vance and Aker because she didn"t want to be stepped on. When she got off the ship and saw the young master and his two servants, she immediately understood that they were there for her and her mom, there was no doubt in her mind.

As soon as she saw them her eyes began to frantically search the area until they finally rested on the only other person besides her mom that Sarah trusted.

Sarah knew that Vance told Aker not to cause any problems. Sarah knew that Vance told Aker not to kill, not to fight, not to stand out. Even though she knew all of that she was hoping that Aker would still help, that"s why when he called out for them to stop, she let out a soft sigh, and she thought "he is someone I can trust, he is who I thought he was".

Now that she was free from the clutches of that servant, what would he do? It was obvious listening to the conversation that Vance had with Aker the other day that Aker hadn"t seen how the hierarchy of the universe worked. That to this young master Aker was the same as a dog that bit its master, it needed to be put down.

After that servant screamed out in pain and let Sarah go Aker advanced at that young master who still had that smug look on his face from cursing Aker a moment ago.

In Young Master Clyde"s eyes Aker was already dead, he could already envision himself laughing and mocking the near lifeless body of Aker as he struggled to survive in his mine.

Before Clyde even had an opportunity to process the scream of his servant, he found himself in the air. As he was getting ready to scream out himself in shock, he felt a sharp pain to his gut that caused his body to lean forward, an action that seemed impossible considering he was floating.

Aker who had freed Sarah had numerous thoughts run through his mind before making his move. He distinctly remembered the conversation he had with Vance just a few days ago and at the time he found the words of Vance to be impossible. Why would someone condemn another person just because they had an opinion that disagreed with theirs? Why would they feel that its fine to punish a person, to beat a person just because of a little humiliation?

For Aker who was tossed in The Pit and forced to fight life and death battles he equated this to one individual who was vile and corrupt. After meeting so many people in The Pits, Dr. Life & Death, Vance, Mavis, Cap, Sampson, Baker, Kara, Sneed and the other apprentices he struggled to equate what Vance was telling him with his actual experiences.

Certainly, Alfred and Alex were the same as the person who threw him in The Pit but Aker still considered them abnormal.

It was only this moment that Aker finally put all of the pieces together. Both Alex and Alfred were not like all the other people he had met, they were the ones that Vance was referencing. Now that Aker thought about it, this Clyde was the third young master he had met and every single one of them made a move against him without fail, and all of them made moves on his life. Each of them for a seemingly insignificant and minor issue that at the very most should cause irritation but nothing beyond that.

After coming to this realization Aker made his move, someone like Clyde wouldn"t last a second in Aker"s clutches.

Aker flashed towards Clyde and his first move was to sweep Clyde"s leg, while he was low, he didn"t forget to grab his knife. The reason he went low to sweep Clyde"s leg in the first place was so that he would be able to grab his knife without drawing anyone"s attention beforehand.

As soon as Aker swept Clyde"s legs Clyde"s entire body went into the air, from the outside it looked like he was frozen sleeping on nothing, his body was laid out perfectly straight, his back and legs perpendicular with the ground, his eyes were full of sunshine as they were wide and filled.

With his right hand holding the knife Aker brought his elbow down into Clyde who was still floating upwards after being swept into the air. As Clyde floated upwards Aker"s elbow was driven down hard, Aker didn"t bother to control his strength this time.

In one smooth move after Aker drove his elbow down into Clyde"s solar plexus, Aker extended out his arm, the knife was aimed for Clyde"s throat, the elbow still driving Clyde down towards the ground.

Because Clyde was struck with so much force in the stomach, he involuntarily lunged his upper half forward, to the crowd it appeared he was trying to commit suicide on Aker"s knife.

Even though Aker was moving faster than Clyde"s eyes could see his instincts were telling him he was about to die. His eyes were wide and the smug smile that plastered his face a second ago was now replaced with fear and horror. It was happening to fast; Clyde couldn"t see what was happening to him which made it all the more freighting.

Aker who was moving the knife at Clyde didn"t feel any fear or self-loathing at his actions. A moment ago, this person threatened to throw both Sarah and himself into the mines where he would laugh at them until they worked themselves to death. Clyde had sent his servant to beat him, he wasn"t just talking about it, his actions proved he was serious about it.

Since the other person dropped all pretenses didn"t that mean that Aker didn"t have to pretend either? How many people had this Clyde done this too? How many lives destroyed?

Aker"s knife only needed a fraction of a second and then this young master would no longer be able to hurt another person......"AKER!" a loud booming yell stopped Aker"s knife just as he was about to slam it into Clyde.

With a loud "THUD" Aker"s elbow pile drove Clyde into the ground causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood. At a minimum several ribs were broken as well as his collar bone and no doubt he had significant internal injuries. Aker didn"t hit him as hard as he could have but he didn"t hold back either, there was a chance that Clyde would end up crippled, even if he wasn"t, he would be recovering for the next six months.
