Chapter 831: What
“Finally, the tortoise raised its legs and revealed…
“Let me tell you another joke. One day, a bear suffered from breast cancer…
“You know about the legend where there are no donkeys in the area of Qian? The donkey in the legend…”
Ren Qi’s voice echoed throughout the operating theater, and he sounded like a jinn who was telling a joke.
Ling Ran did not stop him. Even though he did not like to chat, he would not stop other surgeons from chatting or playing music. Even though he found doctors who told jokes non-stop a little strange, to him, all other surgeons were about the same.
The anesthetist today was the one who administered anesthetics to Chestnut the dog. He did not stop Ren Qi from making jokes either, as matters concerning surgeons had nothing to do with anesthetists.
Ren Qi was talking so much that his throat had become dry, but he had no intention of stopping. Even though it was strange to tell so many jokes, since Doctor Zuo told him to do it, he had no choice but to play along. After all, a lot of surgeons were weirdos, and it was not considered weird at all for a surgeon of Ling Ran’s status to like to listen to jokes. Truth be told, when a surgeon had achieved the kind of success Ling Ran had, it would not even be strange if he were to summon two doctors over from Tianjin for in-service training just to tell him jokes.
At most, he would just send them away after he was done listening to their jokes.
When Ren Qi thought of this, his heart skipped a beat, and he could not help but slow down. ‘I must not tell the jokes too quickly. I must learn from the queen in One Thousand and One Nights and take my time so that I can survive in front of this king who likes to listen to jokes.’
“I’m done.”
The moment Ling Ran finished speaking, everyone in the operating theater sighed in relief in unison.
Ren Qi found it a little strange, and he could not help but ponder with his eyebrows furrowed. ‘Is there anything that’s very difficult about the surgery just now?’
He had basically never really performed arthroscopy before. However, this was due to the way his department delegated tasks to him, and not because it was difficult.
Although Ren Qi was suspicious, he breathed a sigh of relief. At least, he had smoothly carried out his first surgery in Yun Hua Hospital. Even though it was a little tiring to tell jokes nonstop for twenty or thirty minutes, at least he took the first step to fit into Yun Hua Hospital.
Ren Qi raised his head in antic.i.p.ation and asked, “Will there be another surgery after this?”
The anesthetist who administered anesthetics to Chestnut the dog looked at Ren Qi with a smile, and his face looked as puffy as a Corgi’s b.u.t.t.
The two nurses looked at Ren Qi with a smile too. They made sure that they were facing Ling Ran with the prettier side of their faces, and their faces were glowing as they had spent more than thirty minutes putting on makeup this morning.
“Which operating theater?” Ling Ran did not give Ren Qi a straightforward answer either. If he were to answer every question asked by idiotic junior doctors, he might as well become a school teacher rather than work as a senior doctor.
“Operating Theater 3,” the circulating nurse quickly answered.
Ling Ran nodded. He then turned and left.
Ren Qi had not regained his senses, and he stood dumbfoundedly in front of the operating theater.
“I thought that he seemed pretty clever.” When the anesthetist who administered anesthetics to Chestnut the dog saw that he was not moving at all, he could not help but shake his head. He quickly ran over to the door and stepped on the black pedal beside the door to open it.
Even though he was only an attending physician and belonged to the Department of Anesthesiology, based on how things were like in Yun Hua Hospital just now, even if he were bitten by a dog, he would crawl over to Ling Ran to serve him.
As a doctor in a hospital, he would not be able to get medical leave even if he were bitten by a dog.
Ling Ran did not stop at all as he walked.
He was used to having someone open the door for him. He flashed a polite smile at the anesthetist and walked toward Operating Theater 3.
This was when Ren Qi regained his senses, and he wanted to slap himself across the face so badly. He sped forward and thanked the anesthetist. “I’m really sorry. Sigh, I’m so dumb.”
“A lot of doctors who are here for in-service training are dumb. Hurry up, do you expect me to go over and open the door on your behalf?” The anesthetist who administered anesthetics to Chestnut the dog did not bother to put on a polite facade in front of a doctor who was from a lower-ranking hospital. Even though both of them were attending physicians, Ren Qi was merely from a county hospital, and he was from Yun Hua Hospital. Hence, no one in the hospital would think that they were in the same league.
He was from a lower-ranking hospital, after all. It was true that doctors from lower-ranking hospitals might be more powerful, led a more comfortable life, earned a larger sum of money, and enjoyed a higher social status. However, the hospital was an ivory tower where a doctor’s skills mattered the most.
Ren Qi thanked him again. He then followed Ling Ran in haste.
The corridors in the operating area of Yun Hua Emergency Medical Center were wide but short, like a corgi’s b.u.t.t. It only took a few steps for a person to get from one operating theater to another.
However, from Ren Qi’s perspective, Ling Ran looked tremendously far away, and he revered Ling Ran very much.
“Doctor Ling.” Ren Qi managed to arrive at Operating Theater 3 before Ling Ran. He stepped open the door.
*s.h.i.+ck*
The door of Operating Theater 3 slid open. Zhang Anmin and Qu Xiaolian the houseman were already waiting for them inside.
“Is everything ready?” Ling Ran did not enter the operating theater. He merely stood at the doorway and looked around.
“Everything’s ready,” Zhang Anmin said and looked at Su Jiafu the anesthetist, who was standing beside him. He was kind of showing off his authority as an a.s.sociate chief physician.
Su Jiafu moved his b.u.t.tocks away from the stool and rose. He nodded slowly. “You can get started at any time.”
“Let’s get started, then. I’ll go and wash my hands.” Ling Ran turned and glanced at Ren Qi. “Have you performed open abdominal hepatectomy before?”
“I’ve done one during my days as a medical intern,” Ren Qi quickly said. He then tried to forge a closer bond with Ling Ran as he said, “I did my interns.h.i.+p in Yun Hua Hospital too, and I spent the longest time in the General Surgery Department.
Ling Ran nodded. “Hepatolithiasis. We’ll be performing left lobe hepatectomy.”
“Oh, alright.” Ren Qi looked a little anxious.
It did not matter which lobe of the liver he would be operating on. The fact that he would be carrying out hepatectomy was extremely shocking to him.
When Ling Ran carried out gastrectomy, the most important component of the surgery was to deal with the stomach’s connection to the liver. Ren Qi had only carried out normal gastrectomy, and he did not expect to be partic.i.p.ating in a hepatectomy on his first day in Yun Hua Hospital.
Ling Ran did not say anything further.
Ling Treatment Group was mainly focusing on hepatectomy right now. He was becoming more and more renowned, and on “Doctor’s Here”, he was already labeled as a “hepatectomy expert”. Ling Treatment Group had a steady source of patients who were seeking to receive hepatectomy every week. Some were from Yun Hua Hospital, some were from other provinces, and some came because other doctors recommended Ling Ran to them. Hence, it was now a common sight for members of Ling Treatment Group to be carrying out hepatectomy every week.
This surgery had been slotted into the schedule a while back, and it would still go on even if Ren Qi did not show up. It was major surgery, so they could not focus on giving the doctor who was there for in-service training the opportunity to learn. They mainly let him act as the second a.s.sistant and contribute whatever he could.
Hence, there was no need for Ling Ran to explain things in detail to him.
Ling Ran quietly washed his hands step by step. He was neither slow nor fast, and he looked like he was taking a rest instead of was.h.i.+ng his hands.
When Ling Ran was almost done, he asked, “Do you know how to read MRI scans?”
Ren Qi who was feeling bored as he washed his hands was reciting jokes again. He froze for a moment when he heard that. “Yes, there’s an MRI machine in our hospital too.”
An MRI machine cost millions of RMB. Even though it was quite rare a few years ago, ever since China started producing its own MRI machines, they were now a very common sight.
Ling Ran was done was.h.i.+ng his hands. He said, “Later, you can take a look at the MRI scans before partic.i.p.ating in the surgery. Prioritize the T1 axial plane images. There’s no need to look at all of them. Try to be as fast as possible.”
He fished out a towel from a bucket to dry his hands before walking over to the operating theater.
Ren Qi was a little dumbfounded. ‘What are T1 axial plane images?’
