Chapter 10
Volume 3 Chapter 10
Tunto IV [The Storyteller is Occasionally Serious]
{General POV}
Aside from the sound of crackling flames, the rest of the room was silent.
It was a comfortable sound that occasionally rose and dipped as if it were a lullaby, a swaying red dance.
It was a cozy room with two mahogany armchairs and a double sized bed with a side table. There is a fireplace installed. Glitteringly powerful, but illuminated by the light of the Phosphorus that dances quietly, the painting of the lake which is yellowish and yellowish is reflected like a scorching fire.
In one of the fashionable chairs that was suitable for a single season, a young man sat leisurely, dozing off. It was only deep enough to be called a light snooze, far from being sound sleep. The impression was that he was sleeping only because he had to, seeming to say that because it was a necessary part of life so it couldn’t be helped.
He had arranged himself so his neck wouldn’t get sore, and he woke up enough to listen to the phosphorous melody every several minutes. He did not neglect his vigilance, so that he wouldn’t be sorry tomorrow.
“………”
“……”
The one lightly snoring while asleep, was of course, not the young man.
In this room, which was in an inn from Tunto during the evening, there was another person sleeping besides the young man.
“…Huh…?”
The high pitched voice of a little girl echoed in the room, accompanied only by the crackling fire.
In response to the new sound, the young man slowly opened his eyes.
“This…where is…?”
“It’s an inn in Tunto, I picked you up at the end of a back alley
and brought you here.”
“Oh…ah…”
The girl who slowly sat up soon noticed that she had been occupying one of the beds and resting there. There was also her last memory before she collapsed. The young man also sat up in his chair and watched the girl curiously as she put her small hands on her face as if in reflexive embarra.s.sment.
“I…came to Tunto…chasing after them…”
“I do not care about your circ.u.mstances.”
“Huh?”
The young man spoke abruptly, blocking the girl’s words. Making eye-contact, the girl stared at the young man boldly like one eyeing their opponent.
“Desiree McRein…The Magic Librarian of the Imperial Academy…”
“Even if you give me that sort of look, I’m not afraid of a girl who has been fast asleep until just a little while ago.” (Desiree)
“Umm…”
Now feeling embarra.s.sed, Justa Welsea gazed at her feet like a shy little girl.[1]Covered by a blanket, her body had recovered a little bit in the soft bed.
“Here, could it possibly be…” (Justa)[2]
“Even if you are concerned, only I am here…It’s far better situation than that @##%^ Oni would have created…though It’s kind of like I was forced to take in this child.” (Desiree)
“…why would you help a rebel from the Republic?” (Justa)
“That’s it?” (Desiree)
As a result of Justa’s question towards Desiree, he spat out a long-suffering sigh.
Though her confusion was understandable, he considered it a foolish question
“In the first place, the Republic is already a territory of the Empire. There is no reason us to feel any sort of unease.” (Desiree)
“That’s a lie…Oppressing the citizens of the Republic, you should be ashamed of such a messed up government!” (Justa)
“I’ve already heard it from that annoyance. It seems that when some mischief
mischief pa.s.sed through the Republic a bit, it was like a cleansing had occurred.[3] But there is no intention of exploiting the people. In addition, many people have already been naturalized into the Empire…Even one of the newer Magic Librarians should have originated from the Republic.”[4] (Desiree)
“Who is it, who betrayed…even the Chief of State Raidoa! Even now, the Empire’s heavy oppression is causing everyone in the Republic suffering! So we have to act to rescue it!” (Justa)
“..Ah oi.” (Desiree)
“What!” (Justa)
As Just was getting worked up she responded angrily to the words of Desiree, but he responded normally in a cold tone. There was no laughter in his eyes, but even after saying that, his gaze was not filled with hostility towards Justa.
“Does the Chief of State Raidoa know that he was the one who helped destroy the Republic?” (Desiree)
“Huh?” (Justa)
“Inside the Empire…rather than negotiating with the Imperial Council in the Imperial Capital, and trying to create ties with the Empire…they tried to break into the confidential doc.u.ments of the Imperial Academy. These Republic spies were discovered by a magic librarian, and it seems like there were a few idiots who ran out of luck at that time. Apparently…this was a main factor for the dissolution of the Republic, and it was these bright ideas that caused the problem to exacerbate further. A brat like you is being deceived by some kind of #$%#& Puppeteer.” (Desiree)
“…That’s a lie.” (Justa)
“Tch, you talk too much, little brat.” (Desiree)
After muttering as such with a sigh mixed in, he slowly stood up from the sitting
Because he had not moved for a while since he had dozed off his back was sore, but after
but after stretching it a little he felt better.
“…this room has been taken care of until morning, and breakfast has been included. I was worried that your delicate body would collapse again if you fight without eating a bowl of something. Do not worry, you can eat and disappear…I will be going out for a little while.” (Desiree)
What was she doing?
Such a feeling of bewilderment was in the heart of Desiree. However, looking at this girl’s desperation, he unwillingly found himself remembering his own past. Before, when he fought for revenge he did not notice the cruelty of his actions until it was too late.
So just what was she doing?
“……”
“Well, there’s something I can say…If you only listen to the words of one person, you will be deceived, and your are less than a third rate agent…well then.” (Desiree)
Picking up his Naginata that had been standing against the wall, he walked towards the door.
Watching that wide back, Justa was stunned for awhile.
“Wait…” (Justa)
“What is it?” (Desiree)
“…Thank you for bringing me here…” (Justa)
He turned around just enough to give her a glance. But the girl could still could regretfully not apologize. She would not forget to thank him for helping her, no matter what she did before. Only that att.i.tude did Desiree think deserved respect.
Because normally, once a person has recognized you as an enemy they would not say thank you, no matter what you do.
“…but…but towards the Empire that destroyed the Republic…I will not forgive!” (Justa)
“Then come at me after properly seeing the situation, you blind dog.” (Desiree)
“…!” (Justa)
“…Even so, I still think this is too much for the you now. See you.” (Desiree)
Theyou.” (Desiree)
The words flowed easily, as Desiree spoke of the Chief of State, Reidoa.
Desiree was aware of the fact that Justa’s expression trembled at the story that she could not determine if it was true or false. It was not a story he himself was in, but he had his own thoughts about the facts. He could clearly see that she was a child being used as a disposable p.a.w.n.
Without looking back he opened the door of the room.
Whatever she thought, Desiree thought it was fine like this. He had already talked to the innkeeper. Even if he left now, she would still be able to get a meal tomorrow morning.
If that child, who does not understand the situation, was killed……by those people who claim be her ally, he could only shake his head. That is because he painfully understood reality.
He was certain she would be stomped on at some point. But he could hardly imagine that gentle and innocent child would be avenged.
For now he could only try to prepare brakes, and hope that there would be no regret once she hit the point of no return
“…Revenge is only suitable for those whose bones have been stained by hatred.” (Desiree)
He murmured this in spite of himself and closed the door behind him.
Thinking about what to do next, he took a step forward.
Then, suddenly Desiree’s expression transformed.
“…why are you here, $%#*@?” (Desiree)

はっとしたように少女――ジュスタ・ウェルセイアは足元を見つめたAn ambush might be what she’s expecting? It’s honestly pretty vague.少々オイタが過ぎた共和国に、お灸をすえてやったようなもんだ。It uses “moxibustion” apparently, which is a type of chinese medicine. Any ideas on how I could make this sentence better? This whole paragraph by Desiree is all sorts of confusing.
