Chapter 84: Empty Heart
After returning home, Lin Xin still hasn"t come back. Aunt Hui was watching TV in the living room as usual.
On TV, an 8 o"clock "dog blood" drama was showing. It was about a husband who finally went back to his legal wife"s embrace after having an affair.
The plot showed his wife losing her son and raising the mistress" son as her own.
Watching this, Aunt Hui"s face was full of tears. The box of tissues wasn"t spared even after losing half its contents.
Lin Xinyu poured her a gla.s.s of water and watched the show with her in boredom.
Seeing that the mistress" son was sick, his wife woke up in the middle of the night and carried the mistress" son to the hospital.
He couldn"t help but think of Lin Xin lying on the sofa complaining about how shows like these should many many unreasonable things.
"This woman"s an idiot. If her husband was cheating on her, she should"ve gotten a divorce."
"And what"s the point of being so nice to the mistress" son?"
"No, you should treat him very well, feed him, squander on him aplenty, spoil him rotten, and soon he"ll waste his life away, drinking, gambling, and whoring. Now that"s a good story! Haha…"
Lin Xin"s devilish voice kept echoing in his ears, suppressing the sound coming from the television. He looked to his side and the end of the sofa was empty. His heart also felt empty. After pacing back and forth in the room for a while, he said to Aunt Hui, “Mom, I"m going out to buy some food.”
Aunt Hui spiritedly replied, “Come back early.”
Lin Xinyu went downstairs planning to go find Lin Xin, but when he arrived at the entrance of the district, he realized he didn"t know where to go.
They had no phones or anything of that sort. Where could she be?
Lin Xin was like a kite with its string cut, flying off into the distance.
Lin Xinyu"s heart was empty. The water that used to naturally well out of his heart had dried up. Inside of it was now a barren wasteland.
The places where it cracked open were painful, extremely painful. As if he had been cut by a knife, he could still see the pieces; It was a b.l.o.o.d.y mess. He felt pain for himself.
He wasn"t like this before. What was happening to him?
He didn"t know where to find Lin Xin, so he just squatted at the entrance of the district and waited. He thought he"ll see her first when she comes back.
He squatted there like a statue, watching every pa.s.sing car and person come and go. It was unknown how long he had waited when he saw Lin Xin got out of the taxi, dragging a large box with her.
“Lin Xin!” He stood up and called out to her. He suddenly felt dizzy and his legs went numb. He thought regretfully, I shouldn"t have squatted down.
When Lin Xin heard the sound, she looked over. It couldn"t be that the child was swaying so shakily because his body wasn"t feeling well? Her heart tightened as she threw away the large box in her hand and quickly ran over to support Lin Xinyu.
Lin Xinyu held her hand tightly in his palm. The warmth from the back of her hand spread on his palm, making him feel more at ease. He finally managed to grab hold of the thread and she did not fly away.
Lin Xin asked, “What"s wrong? Are you in pain?”
Lin Xinyu asked, “Where did you go? Why did you come back so late?”
Lin Xin smiled and rea.s.suringly said, “Don"t worry, I"m busy with other things.” She didn"t want to tell him what she was doing.
If she does not say, he won"t ask. It had become their habit over the years.
“I"m fine,” said Lin Xinyu. “But I"ve been squatting for too long. Can you not come back so late? I worry about you.”
Lin Xin"s heart ached for him thinking how he must have been waiting at the door for too long. She felt guilty for her thoughtless behavior. After thinking for a moment, she took out her newly bought phone and handed it over to him.
“I"ll come back earlier. Call me whenever.”
Lin Xinyu took the pink phone and asked, “What"s your phone number?”
Lin Xin pointed at her phone and said, “This is my phone. You use it. I"ll go buy another one tomorrow.”
