Ned gave a nod and followed the chief to his home once again. He would spend the day in here if possible. But he wouldn"t indicate so until he was offered otherwise he would leave. And he also wanted to be on his way tomorrow as the day he would go and meet Lori was close, and also the day to confront Lucy, if she is taking advantage of her.
After enjoying a good meal, made from one of the beasts Ned brought, with the chief and his wife who were actually quite the nice people, Ned got up and started to say his goodbyes when the chief raised his hands to indicate for him to wait a minute.
He sat back in his chair on the now cleaned table from all the food.
When the chief got back he was holding a small cubical box.
He pa.s.sed it to Ned who took it and then looked at the chief questioning him.
"Try opening it" He said with a grin.
And Ned found out that the square wooden box, that may have appeared fragile was actually quite st.u.r.dy.
"I guarantee no one can open it but me. And there is no one that can break it who is currently alive" The chief said with the same grin.
"That is interesting and all, but what does it have to do with me?" Ned admired the box, but he didn"t understand what it had to do with him.
"First of all, I insist on you staying the night. And second, that box would be yours including what is inside." The chief explained.
"Inside? What"s inside?" Ned asked.
The chief took the box back and then he put it on the table, and pa.s.sed his right thumb on the four edges of the surface of the cube.
Then he noticed how the edges he pa.s.sed his thumb along turned a darker shade of brown.
Then he once again pa.s.sed his thumb on them, and this time Ned saw the box open in half, like a ring box.
Inside there was an intricately designed transparent crystal in the shape of a cube.
The chief tapped it and it flew near him then he said, "Record" and it flashed a blue light for a second then died out.
After awhile Ned saw that the crystal was just floating there so he ask about it.
"What is it doing?" Ned said.
"It is recording here let me show you." He swung his hands and the crystal came on it"s own. Then he tapped it twice this time. And a 3D screen showed up in the air.
In the screen appeared Ned who was looking at the camera along with a grinning chief. After a while the Ned on the screen asked the same thing about what the orb was doing.
Ned finally understood. It was like a camera that recorded videos. But he knew that such an artifact like the crystal cube must be worth a fortune.
"You said this is mine along with it"s box? But I can"t even open it." Ned asked.
With a nod the chief pa.s.sed the crystal to Ned.
"Channel your magic into it, then the crystal will acknowledge you as it"s new master. And don"t worry only if the previous owner consent will it allow the new person to own it. And yes every person has magic in them. Even if we dwarfs can"t use magic, we still has minimal amounts of it in our bodies." The chief answered everything like he could read his thoughts.
When Ned heard that just by channeling mana it could change owners was worried, after all that way it was easy to steal, but then the chief explained.
Then came the question of if the chief had magic, which was answered too.

Doing as he said Ned saw the orb flash the same blue light and it floated along side him.
With a grin, the chief said, "congratulation on having the one and only of such devices in the world. Even so it is not really something big, but consider it my gift to you. Now follow me to show you where you"ll spend the night"
He didn"t want Ned to have time to refuse so he started walking fast.
Ned shook his head with a smile and followed.
The house they gave him was good enough, not he would be sleeping in it anyways.
Once he saw that all the dwarfs were far from his house using the map, he entered the s.p.a.ce and meditated and thought of ways to use the crystal cube.
Soon the morning came and Ned bid his goodbye to the dwarf chief and his brethren, who a few among them came until the cave entrance near the river to say goodbye.
"I will visit someday near, and I"ll be bearing gifts, you better watch out" Ned said loud enough for the dwarfs to hear him. Of course they understood the sarcasm hidden. As they had showered him with gifts he didn"t want to take but was forced.
But they also knew that he will really bring gifts, probably the thing they lacked, food.
