Rio"s words made me tremble, I could see the anxious look in Rio"s eyes. This was one of the worst possible situations a Ruin Raider could run into. I really couldn"t believe my luck, the first time I leave to go out to search my first ruins and I run into such a situation. Rio was hanging onto my arm I could feel her trembling along with my own body. We had to think fast but I had no idea what to do!"Rio, what are our chances of escape if we ran for it?" I asked. Depending on her answer would depend on whether we stood our ground and fought or ran for it. I could not come up with any other options other than running or fighting.
"With not knowing what direction the demonic beast horde is coming, the size of the horde and the fact that we are about twelve hours from home. There is also the matter of having nothing around us to take shelter in and hide. I would say around ten percent at most for us to escape safely. It would be higher if we knew the beast horde size and direction they were coming from." Rio had quickly factored in all the options she could think of and what she said seemed correct. But the numbers were extremely low.
"What about if we stood our ground and fought?" If running away would not work then fighting was the next option.
"If we were to try to put up a fight it would be around one percent chance of survival. Although you have magic, your most powerful magic that you have takes you too long to cast. And even still would probably only be enough to kill some lower-ranked demonic beasts. On top of trying to protect me at the same time your magic power would drain quickly. Demonic beast hordes are always lead by a high-rank demonic beast who has some form of intelligence. They are able to command other demonic beast and direct a battle. So the most likely outcome would be me getting eaten alive first and then once your magic power was all used up, you would also be eaten alive. This was not adding in the fact that you have never battled against demonic beasts. If I did add that factor in it would be even lower than one percent." Rio"s words sent shivers down my spine. But she was right. I have yet to have my first battle in this world and starting with a demonic beasts horde was not the best of ideas.
"Wait, Rio, you said something about taking shelter? If we were able to take shelter could we survive the demonic beasts horde until it pa.s.sed?" An idea popped into my mind after going through everything Rio said.
"Un! If we had a shelter that concealed us we would have a one hundred percent chance of surviv... Wait! A shelter!" Rio"s eyes lit up as a realization came to mind and a sense of hope spread throughout her body.
"Yep! All I have to do is build us a shelter! If I use destruction magic to dig a huge hole in the ground and then creation magic to cover the hole, we could hide inside it until the demonic beasts hode pa.s.sed." My adrenalin was really going through the roof now. It was now a race against time.
After deciding our plan of action, I went right to work. I quickly dug a nine-meter deep by nine-meter wide hole for both Rio and I to hide in. The hole was big enough to allow even our sled to come with us. In order for us to get to the bottom, I made a ramp so that the sled could slide inside and a small set of stairs for Rio and I to climb down. I then used creation magic on the sand to build up and solidify a cover on the hole. It was almost four meters thick and as hard as a rock. I had no idea how heavy these demonic beasts would be and Rio did not either. We could only hope that the hole cover would be thick enough to keep us safe until the horde pa.s.sed. All Rio and I could do was huddle together in the shelter I built and wait for the demonic beasts horde to come and go.
Outside in the wastelands, a large cloud of dust was being kicked up into the air as a ma.s.sive horde of demonic beasts were running at full speed in Rio and I"s direction. The ground rumbled beneath their feet causing mini earthquakes as they roamed. Rio was shaking in my arms her face white as a ghost. For someone who lived on Cora her entire life, this situation was probably scarier for her. Since she has seen what happens to those who do not escape.
Time pa.s.sed and finally, the ground overhead started to shake violently. Dirt dropped on our heads as the sound reverberated inside our makeshift shelter. I held Rio in my arms with my back up against the shelter"s wall. I was very glad that I solidified the walls as well. Otherwise, this whole place would have collapsed as soon as the horde arrived. The both of us did not say a word nor did we even dare to breathe. We could only sit there in each other"s embrace and wait.
Time slowly pa.s.sed as the sounds of the demonic beast rumbling got less noticeable. What seemed like hours was only ten minutes or so. But finally the ground around us slowly settled and the sounds overhead stopped. The vibrations in the ground grew fainter and fainter, telling us that the horde had now pa.s.sed by.

I looked over at Rio and smiled at her. Rio smiled back at me and whispered: "We should stay here until morning. You never know if there were in stragglers in the horde."
"Un… You are right." We were finally both able to breathe a sigh of relief. If I did not have destruction magic and creation magic our situation would have been one hundred times more horrible than it was just now. This was a good learning experience for both Rio and me.
