Chapter 25: Waku Waku[1]The day after Will and Ellen stayed at the Royal Palace, the Queen decided to drag out Yuri who was living almost like a shut-in to the garden and make him have a tea party with Ellen.
Will would discuss with the Queen and her chief va.s.sals about to make a school for commoners during that time.
「Chichiue[2], Chichiue, is today a day Ellen should be like a n.o.ble? (°▽°)?」
While waiting for Yuri in the garden, Ellen asked Will.
Other n.o.bles would occasionally visit the territory of Theodoare and at those times, if Ellen acted just as she was, she would get scolded by Saya[3] for who knows how long after the n.o.ble leaves which was exceedingly bothersome for her, so Ellen would imitate the n.o.bles when she meets them.
Although Ellen is a respectable n.o.ble when she imitates, many have said that the real Ellen isn’t very n.o.ble-like so the Ellen who doesn’t properly understand how to be n.o.ble-like has no choice but to imitate the n.o.bles that would come once in a while.
「Hmm. Let’s see. This is more or less the Royal Palace therefore you shouldn’t be too extreme but today’s objective is to destroy the fortress of His Highness Yuri’s heart.
Well… the real Ellen is fine. ( ´_ゝ`)」
「Yay! (°▽°) Yay! (°▽°) Today I will be playing with the son of Diana Obasama whom I’ve met before, right? Diana Obasama who doesn’t secretly bad mouth Ellen behind her back like other n.o.bles do is nice (°▽°)」
There were times where the Ellen who wasn’t n.o.ble-like had various run-ins with other n.o.bles who would talk behind her back so Ellen isn’t very fond of n.o.bles.
Diana ーー the name of the Queen ーー has met Ellen multiple times when she inspects the Theodoare border territory, and when she sees Ellen playing pranks, she doesn’t backbite[4] her but would instead scold her directly.
Starting with Saya, Ellen liked people who would scold her up front.
Being scolded directly, she would understand what she did wrong, and by understanding, she would then be able to correct herself.
Whereas when backbiting, she knows she’s being badmouthed but it can’t be helped that she doesn’t know what she did wrong.
People who backbite could not understand what Ellen wanted at all which was why they were being ambiguous.
On the contrary, people who directly scolded her were worried if she would become a splendid adult.
However, backbiters didn’t care about Ellen.
Them not caring about her shouldn’t have interested Ellen but even if she shouldn’t be interested, what they say about Ellen was a complete mystery to her.
On the other hand, she thought that Diana’s sermons were logical and very easy to understand so Ellen understood that Diana wanted to help about her.
That’s why Ellen liked Diana and thought that if it’s her son, he might somehow be a good guy.
Since Diana the Queen was someone important, her son who Ellen had plans to play with today seemed to be a sort of important prince but because her father said she doesn’t have to act like a n.o.ble and that she could just be how she always is, the thought of playing in this vast palace excited her.
Footnotes:
The t.i.tle means excited. Romaji version is just my preference.[↩]Chichiue is a formal way of saying father, I chose to write it this way since Ellen changes how she calls him at times.[↩]In case you forgot, Saya is their head maid.[↩]To backbite means to talk behind someone’s back.[↩]Translator’s Note:
Thanks for reading! This chapter is longer than recent chapters, at least. It was a bit confusing and repet.i.tive but I hope it (the confusion) didn’t carry over as much after it was translated. If it is, please tell me and I’ll try to rephrase, maybe?
