Chapter 26: I’m Sorry. But, I’m a Wolf
The flame reflected a red light on the mercenaries faces. They were sitting together in a circle and telling each other vulgar jokes from time to time.
A large yellow dog caught my attention.
It is said that dogs are descendants of tamed wolves. To me, who is a legit member of the wolf race, I consider dogs as traitors.
Plus, dogs have an innate sense of smell and sense of danger. So I couldn’t not take note of it.
Beside the large yellow dog was an aged mercenary and on his right was a young man. Their manner of dress was very similar to the members of Ice Wolf.
“Xu Cheng, does wolf meat taste good?” A grizzled-haired old mercenary took out a wine pot and asked the young mercenary by his side after drinking a mouthful.
A few other mercenaries on the side also noticed their conversation.
“It’s too terrible!” Xu Cheng said with a creased face, “There is a foul smell and the meat is very tough. Never have I eaten meat that was more disgusting than this.”
The few mercenaries by the side all roared with laughter.
“I already told you earlier, but you just didn’t want to believe me.” The old mercenary beamingly said, “If snow wolf meat was as tasty as snow rabbit meat, then I’m afraid they would have already all been killed off!”
I want to bite everyone to death.
“Snow rabbit, Old Brother ate it before?” Xu Cheng asked in a soft voice.
“Of course I ate it before! When I was young, what was most abundant in the snow fields were snow rabbits. In those days, what we mercenaries liked to eat the most was snow rabbits! But it’s a pity that the snow rabbits are almost completely gone these years.”
“Old brother is certainly lucky for chancing upon fine food. Buying snow rabbits from the Bright Moon Store is ten gold coins a piece. I’ve heard that the dish braised snow rabbit is one hundred gold coins at Bright Moon Store. If I caught one, I could definitely not bear to eat it and I would sell it.” Xu Cheng’s eyes were sparkling with a golden light.
“Our Ice Dragon Mercenary Group will definitely obtain a lot of good rewards after finis.h.i.+ng this mission.” the old mercenary patted Xu Cheng’s shoulder and encouragingly said.
“Old Brother, will there be problems with our mission this time?” Xu Cheng asked in a quiet voice.
“What problem?”
“Our target this time are the snow wolves. In this snowy field, they are the one existence that cannot be provoked. If……”
“Are you afraid of the Snow Wolf Race’s revenge?” The old mercenary asked.
“Mhm.”
“Don’t be afraid, our Ice Dragon Mercenary Group is the most famous mercenary group of the Frozen Empire. With a leader that’s closed to the Innate Level, there is nothing the Snow Wolf Race can do to me.”
“Furthermore, do you know who is that person that is traveling with our mercenary group this time?”
The old mercenary mysteriously asked.
The mercenaries on the side were no longer speaking as they directed all of their attention to this old mercenary.
“Isn’t it the son of the Northern Cloud City’s Lord, the Young Master?” Xu Cheng answered uncertainly.
“It is that Young Master, but did you guys not think of anything else?” The old mercenary was somewhat proud as he clear about it and drank another mouthful of wine, it looked like he had become somewhat drunk.
“What else?”
“The elder that is always standing by Young Master Nan Gong!” The old mercenary looked at them with a disappointed face after they failed to meet his expectations, but his eyes still showed that he was quite proud of himself. He didn’t keep them in suspense and continued to explain, “According to my many years of experience, I am certain that that elder is also an Acquired Ninth Level like our leader and close to being an Innate Expert at that!”
“Ah, really?” The mercenaries by the side all shouted as they asked.
“Be more quiet! Do you guys want everyone to know?” The old mercenary hushed them.
Hearing this, my heart also sank.
Two experts of the Acquired Ninth Level! It’s somewhat hard to handle!
“Old Brother, is there any other news?” Xu Cheng asked in a somewhat revering way.
“I can be considered a veteran in the mercenary group, what can I not know?” The old mercenary pretended to be mysterious as he asked, “Do you guys know why our mercenary group have to hunt and kill the snow wolves this time?’
“Why?”
I was also silently waiting for the old mercenary’s answer.
“The City Lord is preparing a one thousand men guard squadron and needs clothing equipment. The City Lord felt that the clothes made from the snow wolves’ pelt were the best and also very awe-inspiring. But on these snowfields, there is nearly no mercenary group that were willing to offend the Snow Wolf Race. Only our Ice Dragon Mercenary Group has the strength to take this commission!”
“One thousand pieces of clothing, Perhaps we have to kill several thousands of snow wolves!” Xu Cheng exclaimed in astonishment.
“Indeed, it can’t be done if there weren’t a few thousand.” The old mercenary nodded.
I fought to suppress my rage with all my might. I really, really wanted to kill them all.
Who has the Snow Wolf Race ever provoked? Just for some fur, the humans were killing them like this.
“Young Master Nan Gong also said to kill the leader of the Snow Wolf Race, peel off its pelt and give it to the City Lord as a congratulatory gift on his birthday.”
Congratulatory gift?
I want to delivery that Young Master Nan Gong’s head as a congratulatory gift to his father.
At this moment, I became filled with an overflowing hatred toward the Ice Dragon Mercenary Group and the Nan Gong Family.
When the snow wolves were destroyed on such a large scale, would the young in the nests be safe?
Would Miki and Foster Mother encounter a bitter experience?
“Let’s stop talking. Xu Cheng, where is the snow wolf meat you roasted?” the old mercenary terminated the subject and switched to asking.
“Old Brother, it’s very nasty.”
“I’m not the one eating it, it’s for Big Yellow. Let him some eat some more wolf meat and temper his courage. He was really frightened by the snow wolf scents today!”
“I threw it away, it’s over there.” Xu Cheng stretched out a finger and pointed in my direction.
I turned and look at that piece of roasted meat and couldn’t help but think in my heart: It couldn’t be this coincident!
Remembering that I almost ate the meat from my kinsmen, I could help but be disgusted in my heart.
“I’ll go pick it up.” The old mercenary stood and left Big Yellow obediently sitting by the bonfire, his eyes following his master as he left.
The old mercenary walked in my direction and I hid in the thickets. He very quickly found that piece of discarded wolf meat and bent his body. Just as he touched the meat, I rushed out from the thicket and tore through his throat with one bite.
He clutched his throat which was gus.h.i.+ng with blood and wanted to shout, but he could only make a small rumbling sound then fall to the ground, never to move again.
In just a short time like this, the old mercenary that was just chatting with the others died like this.
I was very calm. This was no longer my first time killing someone, and besides, this was for revenge. Without any mental burdens, what I had felt now was the refres.h.i.+ng feeling of taking revenge.
Since they dared to ma.s.sacre the snow wolves, then they should be ready to be killed by snow wolves as well. Only then, will justice be served!
My Soul Points increased by seven points. The old mercenary’s strength was about the same as mine, it was just that he died under a moment of carelessness.
The old mercenary never came back and the Xu Cheng who was by him loudly shouted: “Old Brother! It’s just in those thickets, I didn’t throw it too far!”
The dead could not respond.
Xu Cheng also left the bonfire and walked toward me. I quietly hid and waited for the opportunity.
He very quickly made his way to the old mercenary’s position and found him. He crouched down and pushed the old mercenary’s back a little.
“Old Brother, you didn’t fall over from being too drunk, did you?”
In the same way, the young Xu Cheng clutched his throat of gus.h.i.+ng blood as he stared at me in horror. His mouth was wide open as continued to spout out blood.
He was as young as me and in a beautiful period of his life. Yet he would be parting ways with this world at such a young age.
Why must they be mercenaries?
Why must they kill my kinsmen?
Why couldn’t they just properly stay in the human world and learn a trade to work for a living? And then marry a normal wife and peacefully live out their life?
I admit I am a young person who adopts an artistic style and have a depressing personality. I also value life.
I hope that he has no mother or father, no wife or child and that as he dies, he is still a virgin and there was nothing to worry about at all.
I watched him go and said in my heart: I’m sorry. But, I’m a wolf.
“This is bad, I smell blood!”
Just after apologizing, I heard the sudden shouts of the mercenaries.
