"It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth and wisdom"— Aristotle
I can still remember the sound of the bell at 5:45 am every morning for three years when I was in the junior secondary cla.s.s in Unity Secondary School Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria (renamed Ekiti Government College, Ado-Ekiti). It was such a horrific experience at the time because the beds weren"t exactly comfortable coupled with other issues like mosquitoes and human distractions, so you would barely have the kind of sleep you desired before the bells rang.
This experience made me dislike the habit of waking up early, I was actually coerced into getting used to it by circ.u.mstances I had no control over or so I thought at the time. The moment I got promoted to the senior secondary cla.s.s and I became a "stakeholder" so to say, it was the first thing I discarded of as quickly as possible.
As a senior secondary cla.s.s student, that was an express ticket to flout rules and regulations, actually it was a big relief to have the liberty to add at least an extra hour or an hour and a half to my bed hours. I never had to follow any routine of waking up early till several years later, this time I had to get used to it in a hard way. A reminder of the principle of going through your trials as at when required so you don"t have to go through as twice as much after you must have been punished by life initially. The punishment is often like a double jeopardy, which is getting punished twice for the same offence, that"s a topic i will want us to treat on another day.
Let"s have a quick look at achievers that are early birds: Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for getting up and sending out company emails according to Gawker"s Ryan Tate. By 5 AM he can be found in the gym. And he works late too, priding himself on being the first in the office and the last out. Also, Disney C.E.O. Bob Iger told the New York Times he gets up at 4:30am every morning. He takes the quiet time to do a number of things, claiming to read the papers, exercise, listen to music, look at email, and watch TV all at once. Even though it"s quiet time, he"s already mult.i.tasking.
Same for former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W Bush Jnr, the first Bush would get up at 4 a.m., gorunning, be in the office by 6 a.m. and stay up until 2 a.m. "He was a horror," said a former White House nurse who had to try to keep up with him. The second Bush kept a similar schedule, going to the office by 6.45 a.m. and often holding meetings at this ripe hour, according to The New York Times.
So did W. Bush"s cabinet member, Colin Powell put in"perfectly appalling" hours, arriving to the office at 6 a.m., and not leaving until after 7 p.m., according to his former students. Condoleezza Rice, the former secretary of state of the United States of America woke up every day at 4:30 a.m. in order to get to the gym before work. Let"s bring it home, the richest black man in the world, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, wakes up by 5 am everyday.
