"We have the capacity to become a unique and special person unlike any other. Draw on your inner resources. LIVE while you still can.

Become all that you can BE."

— Angie Karan

Another word for capacity is volume. Volume is a s.p.a.ce that an object occupies. I am sure you have heard many times being said that someone has the capacity to do one

thing or the other, capacity is the extent in which something can be done or executed. I am sure you have also heard a saying that someone lacks the capacity to achieve something, it can also be said someone lacks the capacity to see a project through.

Whatever you want to do in life you must have the required capacity to see it through. The reason why some people became professors ahead of other mates they started the journey together is capacity, the reason why some athletes are physically stronger and more agile than others is capacity, the reason some people have a diversified business portfolio while some focus mainly on one is capacity, and again the reason why some people multi-task ahead of others is capacity. Capacity in short serves as the standard means of measurement for everything in life.

Capacity can simply be defined as the power to do something or ability to understand something. this means it can be built or worked on. People aren"t born with the capacity for anything, everyone is born with a talent or gift but how that talent will translate to substance depends on the capacity built over time to turn the talent to substance.

Let"s go the route of volume as a synonym for capacity again, in order for me to hit a home run with this. I want you to picture a situation in your head where different caterers were invited for an event to serve c.o.c.ktails, let"s a.s.sume they were given equal amounts of money to serve a certain number of guests each, but were also given a free hand to determine the quant.i.ty of drinks to serve, but with strict instruction that they shouldn"t run out of drinks apportioned to the section they cater for till the end of the occasion, now I won"t be wrong if I predict that the caterer with the largest size of containers to mix and store drinks will be the one to serve more drinks than others.

Certainly they will come with containers of different sizes to mix their drinks, since they were given no specific instruction about volume, so they will just reason within themselves how many people a 30 litre storage container, a 50 litre storage container or even a 100 litre container can serve on the long run, eventually the caterer who is smart enough to come with the largest container will probably or certainly outlast others in the process.

Another example is two houses with 20 people living within each, it is no rocket science to know that the house with a tank with the larger storage capacity will provide water as at when needed for the occupiers of the house than the other with a less size of tank, in fact, most times they will have to beg their neighbours for water till they increase the size of their tank. If I had more time and s.p.a.ce, I would have come up with thousands of examples across all endeavours of life.

Capacity obviously affects every aspect of life without an inch of doubt, that is why it is a very key component of the success cycle. To produce a greater output, you have to increase your capacity levels. Every year the federal government of Nigeria budgets a lot of money to build personal capacity of people across different sectors for improved performance and results. The government year in year out spends billions of naira to train civil servants and consultants that implement her policies and plans because they know that knowledge is like a tank that needs to be filled with water at all times so it can provide water anytime the tap is turned on.

There is a story of a footballer named Christiano Ronaldo from Portugal who plays for Real Madrid football club, he arrived at Manchester united football club in England as a frail 18 year old boy in the year 2003, who looked like he wasn"t physically ready for the big stage, but this same frail looking boy made up his mind a long time ago that he wanted to be the best footballer in the world, he didn"t just wish it, he worked towards it, he knew he had to do great things on and off the pitch to achieve it so when other footballers retire to their separate homes after a training exercise, he will continue to practise on the training ground, he kept doing this for a long time till he improved on his fitness levels then ultimately his goal scoring abilities and speed on the ball improved, leading to more success on match days . He continued on this path till he became the best footballer in the world, and he"s gone on to win the award of the best football player in the world a record four times, the highest by any European player. He built his personal capacity to that level.

Curiously, there seems to be a connection between intellectual capacity improvement and physical capacity improvement, they appear to work hand in hand. Anyone who works on one and leaves the other will still not improve on the long run. Physical capacity improvement is the area of hard work, while the intellectual aspect has to do with knowledge and skills. The two must flow together for one to achieve great things.

In the example of the c.o.c.ktails caterer I used earlier, to reason better than others has to do with intellectual strength, it has to do with thinking of areas others ignored. In the other example of Christian o Ronaldo, it takes a measure of intelligence to become the best in the world, football isn"t just a physical activity, it requires a combination of skills and brawn to become the best, you have to make quick and fast decisions in split seconds in a contact sport that football is, so he had to invest a lot of time as well to improve on his football intelligence. That"s simply how capacity is built. It is built on a combination of skills and hard work over a period of time. Capacity building is required of everyone that wants to improve daily, it is has to be seen as a duty that everyone must take up to add value to the society. You must try as much as possible to build your capacity to acceptable levels in order to be productive.

There are five proven ways to build one"s capacity to become more productive in life:

1. Set yourself a goal/challenge like Christian o Ronaldo: Christan o made up his mind first, you must aspire to achieve something before you build the capacity to achieve it.

2. Design a path to achieve that goal and work towards it with all diligence: success doesn"t come through wishes; you must work your way at it. You must put in the hard work.

3. Acquire the required skills: no matter how determined a mechanic is, he can"t operate on a child unless he goes to medical school. You have to have the knowledge required.

4. Don"t relent or be distracted: never ever give up even when things look bleak, even when it appears you aren"t getting close to surmount the challenge you have set for yourself.

5. Build a mental wall: build a mental wall around your dream, all battles are won in the mind, never allow negative thoughts to penetrate through.
