"I just try to live my life every day by doing the right thing."

— Damian Lewis

It takes a lot of self-discipline, will and persistent efforts to do the right thing in life. It has always been and will always be so. It isn"t so difficult to understand why because there are always 1001 wrong things to do in life. To stand alone even when every other person in the crowd is doing the same thing requires a lot of will power.

These days with our value system being eroded by different strange practises we witness every day, it takes a lot of guts and determination to stay focussed on the right things under present circ.u.mstances, but regardless, excuses are the best companions of a wilful person. No matter how easy it will ever be to do the right thing, some people will never act or behave appropriately, and no matter how simple it is to do the wrong things, some people will rather do the right thing.

Some people find it hard to do the right thing, they prefer to purposely do the wrong things, hoping they don"t get caught, and if they get caught invariably, they are quick to apologise or devise means to make up for whatever wrong they have done. Initially, this strategy works with some people for a while, but after some time it becomes obvious that it"s the stock in trade of such people, invariably they get found out and that"s the end of the story. People will avoid them altogether, no one loves to get hurt, the only people that will remain in their lives are family members primarily. This scenario is usually for cordial relationships or friendly interactions. There are ways this topic works out in the office place, as it concerns rules and regulations, the same also applies to keeping to the law of the country you live and work in. Your friend or friends can easily overlook any untoward behaviour of yours, your family members can do same, your a.s.sociates can be that nice too, even your colleagues and superior at your workplace can do same but the enforcers of the law in your country might not be that magnanimous, so you have to be very careful about how you get used to doing the wrong things.

I remember that my mum used to always say that whoever love stotelllies will somedaybecomeathief, shewa.s.so convinced about this that she doesn"t overlook any lie anyone tells, based on her convictions at the time, she will employ every means to ensure you don"t tell a lie again because of the fear she harbours about the possibility of you becoming a thief if that behaviour of yours isn"t checked and corrected as quickly as possible. For her it was a genuine fear and concern. She took such very seriously. The same way this topic relates with whoever that loves to do the wrong things, it is a gradual process, most things don"t get completely destroyed in a day, they fall upon themselves gradually, till the centre can"t hold anymore.

Doing the wrong things usually starts from one"s foundation, then it goes on from that point to school days, from school days to work place to marriage and this continues till it becomes a problem for the society at large.

The phrase "once a crook, always a crook" might sound too harsh to you especially if you are the type who believes everyone deserves a second chance or if you believe that change is the most constant thing in life and that there"s no one who can be bad forever. As true as it is that people change and everyone deserves a second chance, some people will never change all through their lives, right from primary or elementary school till they leave school and blend with the society, they continue to do the wrong things till they end upon the wrong side of the law.

There"s no stopping them from self-ruin, no matter the counsel from different quarters they will remain the same till they come to the end of the road, when easily they could have settled for a better and comfortable option, but that"s just the way life is, it"s a fact of life that not all will turn out well, and that"s why we have all the law enforcement agents who continue to fight different kinds of crime on a daily basis.

Despite the sad state of many prison facilities in the world and the emotional setback a jail term likely presents many people will never stay away from crime, and I ask myself all the time, why? Why will anyone want to persist in the wrong things till it gets to the tipping point? I eventually realised that doing the right or the wrong thing is a matter of habit. Eventually it becomes a lifestyle and at the end, your lifestyle will determine how far you will go in life or it

will determine what you become.

That is why parents need to be more vigilant in the way they raise kids, once a child begins to exhibit the wrong signs, no parent should overlook such, once a child begins to tell lies or love to take shortcuts instead of doing what is right and proper, then the flashlight of warning should begin to blink in one"s head, because if such tendencies are left unchecked, the resultant effect in the future might be too difficult for everyone to cope with.

At this point I wish to look at the qualities of an artful dodger. An artful dodger hates to do the right thing, he or she will rather outwit or outsmart everyone in a negative manner, when it"s easier to just to do the right thing. They are ones that are quick to say sorry instead of doing what is right, or will attempt to bribe their way to the top instead of following a laid down rule or process. They get found out most times and no one attaches any importance to their words or deeds, it is not a good thing to have a reputation of this kind in anyway. It is not a good character to imbibe in anyway.

The only reason anyone will be an artful dodger is to avoid doing what is right. So how do you ensure you do the right thing always since it is a very difficult thing to do? If you can get used to doing the following things I am about to write, I believe you will become better at doing the right thing:

1. Make the decision: No change happens without the first step of deciding.

1. Make it a habit to do the right thing: When you start initially it will be tough because you are used to having your way, but since you have made the decision to do the right thing, you will always make it a point of duty to ensure you don"t repeat that wrong thing the next time.

2. Make it public: this helps to put you in check, when you have made it public that you are sold out to the right thing, people who do not like the right thing will avoid you, which makes it better for you to get used to your new ways of doing things.

3. Rest.i.tute when yo do the wrong things: the pain that comes with rest.i.tution will keep you in check going forward because rest.i.tution requires a lot of humility.
