Takikomi Gohan (Part 2)Ignaz and Camil showed their faces at Izakaya n.o.bu during lunch the next day.
Although the sign curtain hadn"t been put out, it seemed that they served lunch to regulars in the shop. They could see a handful of customers enjoying their delicious food, but upon noticing that Gernot wasn"t there, they wondered if he would show up today.
They had visited the shop twice before, but they still found it strange. This shop, which was full of eccentricities, possibly contained some clues to new ways of selling their rice.
「Welcome. I’ve heard the story from Gernot-san.」
They were greeted by s.h.i.+n.o.bu, as well as another waitress. They also noticed that there was one more chef. It seemed that the adorable waitress, Eva, who often ran around waiting tables in the shop, wasn"t around at this time.
「I was thinking about how to eat this sa.s.sarica rice.」
He handed her a bag filled with polished sa.s.sarica rice.
The grains were shorter than those of comune rice, which was commonly eaten in the Holy Kingdom, and it became slightly sticky when cooked.
「Sa.s.sarica rice, huh.」
s.h.i.+n.o.bu pa.s.sed the heavy bag to Taisho after taking out a handful of rice and sniffing it.
「It doesn’t have the fragrance of Thai rice, and I feel…that it’s closer to j.a.panese rice.」
Without further ado, Taisho measured out a portion of the bag"s contents, then proceeded to wash it with water. His actions showed that he had repeated this process tens of thousands of times.
The other chef was captivated by the appearance of Taisho was.h.i.+ng the rice, which emitted a soothing atmosphere.
「So, what is Taisho going to do with this rice?」
s.h.i.+n.o.bu asked Taisho, who was checking the sa.s.sarica rice"s texture several times.
「From Gernot"s story, it seems the problem is the sheer quant.i.ty of rice, so I think it"d be difficult to do this alone. What do you think, s.h.i.+n.o.bu-chan?」
「Even if a little boom happened, like with the eel bentos, it"s impossible for our shop to use up an entire warehouse"s worth of rice.」
「Yeah, I"ve been thinking the same thing」
For a while, only the sounds of rice being washed echoed in the shop.
A smartly-dressed regular, who was eating tempura, had been looking over at them curiously. He finally gave in and opened his mouth.
「s.h.i.+n.o.bu-san, what are you all discussing?」
「Apparently, Ignaz-san and Camil-san, from the Eisen Schmidt Company, stocked too much rice. They completely filled their warehouse. Does Arnoux-san have any good advice?」
「When you say rice (gomi), you"re talking about "rice" (raisu), right? It"s true that people don"t eat much of it around here.」
The staple food of Aitheria was either bread or oat porridge, after all. There was no established habit of eating rice.
「As a result, they were wondering if our store has any solutions.」
「That"s quite a difficult problem. I"m not familiar with it, so can you tell me if rice can be preserved?」
「Once the rice is threshed, it has to be eaten as soon as possible, but unpolished rice can last a long time.」
「I see.」
The guest named Arnoux folded his arms, but not much was expected from him. What kind of advice could come from a man who looked like a gambler?
There was probably nothing that could be done for this situation after all.
Winter was when food shortages were common. If they lowered their heads and got a few referrals, some of the rice could be sold. Actually, it probably wasn"t too late to get referrals, since winter wasn"t over yet.
Taisho, who had finished was.h.i.+ng the rice, was skillfully cutting some vegetables and chicken into bite-sized portions.
「Are you going to cook takikomi gohan ?」(TL: takikomi gohan = j.a.panese mixed rice)
「As expected of s.h.i.+n.o.bu-chan. I think it"d be easier for people who aren"t accustomed to the taste to eat them.」
「How about fried rice or pilaf?」
「This sa.s.sarica rice is…probably more suited for takikomi gohan, I think. No matter what, fried rice and pilaf both need to be cooked with bigger flames.」
It was clear what Taisho was thinking about when he mentioned bigger flames.
Once Izakaya n.o.bu popularized rice dishes, people would learn how to cook them at home.
If that happened, more rice would be consumed than would have been possible with only n.o.bu, and people who were unable to come to the store could enjoy rice cuisine as well.
「Now then, until the sa.s.sarica rice is cooked, why don"t you try one of our shop"s rice dishes? Hans, please bring them out.」
The other chef, who had a baby face, responded energetically and presented plates of food to Ignaz and Camil. Tais...o...b..gan to explain.
「These are yaki onigiri.」(TL note: yaki onigiri = fried rice b.a.l.l.s.)
It was rice shaped into a rounded triangle and grilled with sauce spread on top of it. The fragrant smell was irresistible. When Ignaz took a bite, the grilled exterior was crunchy, but the interior was fluffy. It was delicious.
The strong flavor of the seasoning was really good, too. After getting drunk on alcohol, this flavor was a welcome change for the stomach.
Yaki onigiri
However…
When Ignaz looked at his partner, it seemed that Camil had noticed the same thing he did.
「Taisho, this yaki onigiri is…」
「Is there a problem with it?」
「No, it’s very good, but… how do you make this sauce?」
「Ah…」
When they had eaten kaisen don in this shop in the past, they ate it with a seasoning called "shoyu". (TL note: shoyu = soy sauce) Since they liked it so much, they had tried searching everywhere, but that seasoning didn"t exist in the Empire.
「If you use shoyu in the takikomi gohan as well, I think it"ll be difficult to make it in common households.」
A sigh and a voice of disappointment was heard in the shop.
Since he didn"t know where to stock it, was shoyu a secret recipe? If it was a seasoning that could only be used in n.o.bu, then it couldn"t be used to promote sa.s.sarica rice sales.
Even if it was this delicious.
「It might be a hurdle for anyone who isn"t accustomed to eating rice by itself, huh.」
s.h.i.+n.o.bu nodded in response to Taisho"s muttering.
「What about introducing rice b.a.l.l.s as side dishes?」
「Would people who found our shop"s rice b.a.l.l.s to be delicious make them at home? Although it is as simple as grilling and shaping it.」
「Isn"t that the same as making yaki onigiri?」
「I thought of making these because they"re for Ignaz and Camil-san… but this has stumped me.」
From then onwards, various opinions were put forth.
Isaac, a man who was with Arnoux, suggested using fish sauce (Fischsoße), which was made out of bagangan, instead of shoyu, but the waitress Leontaine shook her head.
Fish sauce made from bagangan, which was a small fish commonly caught in Aitheria, had a similar saltiness to shoyu, but it had a unique smell. There was a method for concealing the smell using ginger (ingwer), but she said there were already more than enough difficulties in cooking takikomi gohan with the sa.s.sarica rice.
「If Leontaine-san says so, then it"s probably difficult.」
s.h.i.+n.o.bu put her chin on her hands and also fell silent.
Various ideas were pa.s.sed back and forth, but only time made any progress.
Arnoux whispered something to Isaac, who shook his head.
Without the fragrant smells wafting from the iron pot, this heavy pressure might have caused someone to break down.
When the sunlight that shone through the gla.s.s door was about to change from day to dusk, someone began to knock on Izakaya n.o.bu"s door.
「I"m sorry, but we"re not open yet.」
「s.h.i.+n.o.bu-san, it"s me, Gernot the tax collector.」
Gernot, who entered, seemed to be as calm as usual, but s.h.i.+n.o.bu guessed that he had rushed over here. His face had a light sheen of sweat.
When Ignaz got up to update him about the situation, Gernot respectfully bowed to Arnoux.
「I pay my respects to the Marquis of Sachnussenburg.」
At the unexpected mention of the marquis t.i.tle, Ignaz couldn"t help but stare at Arnoux.
Incidentally, the news about the feudal lord of Sachnussenburg pa.s.sing on his t.i.tle before the beginning of the year had been a huge topic of discussion.
He had heard that the new lord was young and fresh-faced, but he never thought that he"d be this young.
「It"s fine. In Izakaya n.o.bu, I"m just Arnoux, a simple gambler. So, have you found it? What is it for?」
Gernot took out a sheet of parchment paper from around his chest and handed it to Arnoux. It was made of high quality parchment, which was used for administrative doc.u.ments.
A smile began to form on Arnoux"s face as he looked at the doc.u.ment, and it slowly grew.
「I see, you thought of something interesting.」
When Arnoux handed the parchment over to Isaac, he was instantly displeased.
Camil was wondering what was written on it, when Isaac tossed the parchment paper to him.
「Hmm, let"s see, let"s see… This is a notice stating that the Marquis of Sachnussenburg"s family will purchase inventory from the Eisen Schmidt Company to supply the emergency stockpiles for poverty relief…? Wait a minute. What is this?!」
As Camil panicked, Ignaz s.n.a.t.c.hed the paper from him and skimmed through it.
It was written that the Marquis of Sachnussenburg would buy the sa.s.sarica rice at an appropriate price. Of course, no one had signed it yet.
Arnoux, with an amused expression on his face, asked Gernot,
「You"re acting on your own, aren"t you, Gernot-san?」
「I have talked with the president of the Eisen Schmidt Company and the butler of the marquis family before drawing this up. I don"t think there"s anything amusing about the contents.」
「It"s certainly true that the marquis family wants to buy cheap preserved food for the poor. How did you find out about it?」
「Since I am a tax collector, I pay close attention to the pricing trends of grain in the neighbourhood. With all due respect, quite a lot of the emergency stockpiles were released last year due to poor crops, so I surmised that there is not much grain left in stock.」
Rice met the condition because it wasn"t a perishable item.
There were no objections, as it was also cheap. After all, it was bought at one-third the average market price. If the marquis was willing to buy it, they could sell it for a hefty sum.
「How "bout it? Isaac, what do you think?」
「As I have said earlier, I am against it.」
Apparently, Arnoux thought of the exact same thing as Gernot. Arnoux was the marquis, so why was Isaac opposed to his plan?
「Is it because of the storage location?」
「Yes. Only the warehouse used to store the annual tribute in the Marquis’ house can store the amount of grain that is in the company’s warehouse. However, it’s currently…」
「I"m wondering, is it the conventional practice to store only wheat?」
n.o.bles were surprisingly particular about conventions. It was said that only one kind of crop should be stored in the warehouse.
「About that, I have an idea.」
Gernot took out another sheet of parchment paper from his chest.
「I see. We can use that place, huh?」
「That place?」
As Isaac stared at the doc.u.ment, Camil became impatient and asked him for clarification. Isaac replied,
「Since you are an Eisen Schmidt Company employee, you might have heard of this name. There was a servant, by the name of Damien, who caused a lot of trouble in Aitheria a while back. He was hired by the Bachschouf Company, and that guy had bought a small residence in the outskirts of the city to function as the base of his operations.」
「And right now, that place is managed by our Marquis Sachnussenburg"s house.」
Arnoux slapped Gernot"s shoulders several times as he laughed.
「Well done! That’s a pretty good idea. I went to see it once before, and it"s certainly larger than an ordinary warehouse. Plus, it"s close to Aitheria. It"s perfect as a grain warehouse.」
「Thank you very much.」
「So, Gernot-san. What if n.o.bu had made an innovative new dish and the prospect of finding a solution looked brighter? What would you have done then?」
Gernot bowed deeply while answering that ill-natured question.
「In that case, I was planning to not take out the doc.u.ments and I would have partic.i.p.ated in enjoying the dish. Either way, it didn’t matter as long as I could collect the taxes.」
Laughter filled Izakaya n.o.bu until s.h.i.+n.o.bu called out to everyone.
「Now then, the takikomi gohan is done!」
Everyone turned to peer over the counter as the lid of the iron pot was removed, and a mild, fragrant aroma rose along with the steam. Ignaz"s stomach, which had only consumed one piece of yaki onigiri since the afternoon, was rumbling with hunger.
Hans filled the rice bowls as Leontaine skillfully set the table.
Using a wooden spoon, Ignaz took his first bite.
The flavor had been fully absorbed by the rice. It gave off a completely different impression than a simple stew.
The chopped ingredients were simply side dishes, which allowed the contents of the rice bowl alone to stand as a complete meal.
It was delicious no matter how he ate it.
As he used his spoon to scoop mouthful after mouthful, he consumed the rice bowl in a blink of an eye.
Takikomi Gohan「Brother-in-law, this is delicious!」
「If only we could eat this everyday…」
At Ignaz"s words, Gernot, who only ordered Napolitan, smiled wryly and laughed,
「So, your worry only amounts to whether you can eat it everyday or not.」
Arnoux and Isaac had also started their second bowl as new customers opened the gla.s.s door and entered, drawn in by the drifting scent.
「Welcome!」
「…’elcome.」
「Today"s special is takikomi gohan.」
As he watched the delighted expressions on the faces of the guests eating the takikomi gohan, Ignaz gave Camil a knowing pat on his shoulders.
