After such an eventful morning, I had prepared myself for a barrage of questions about this and that from Liechten, but in the end it didn’t come . He got called away on some urgent business of some kind and so before I could even gather my thoughts, he was already spurring on his horse, rushing away from our estate . It was kind of anti-climactic after everything that had happened but I quickly got over it and headed off to perform my daily duties in the office .
Even though I call them that, I’m actually quite useless to this household . My current situation is as follows:
Although as a n.o.blewoman, my job would typically be to get married, for the me right now, that would be fairly difficult . It’s already a well-known fact that the royal family disapproves of me and I am currently being labeled as the wicked Duke’s daughter that was banished to live out in the boonies — Who would want to marry me? — That means I need to find my own place in this world if I want to lead a successful life .
For that reason, ever since coming here, I have been learning from Claude and his wife Tracy, the head maid (though there are only two maids actually working here), about the duties of a lord as well as how to perform the daily household ch.o.r.es . Other than that, my time here has been spent in leisure .
At first, they told me that as the Duke’s daughter they couldn’t let me do any work, but after a herculean effort on my part, I somehow managed to persuade them to let me help out . So now I am playing at performing some of the duties of the lord of this estate .
Oh! I also tried learning how to prepare food from Vance, our cook, but Liechten (such a worrywart!) forbade me from even entering the kitchen after I accidentally cut my finger with a knife . … . Well, what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right? … . He just can’t find out about it .
“Claude, can I come in?”
The moment I knock on the door to our simple home office it opens to reveal a middle-aged gentleman standing in the doorway .
“Good morning, Young Mistress,” the man says, bowing reverently to me .
“Good morning, Claude!” I reply, lightly grasping my skirt to bob a curtsy to him .
“It seems Miss Matrove, Miss Petigree, and Miss Lodette have already returned home . ”
“So you knew already . ” …Even though during the whole ordeal I saw neither hide nor hair of either you or Tracy .
The supervisor of this estate, the one who is currently acting as the subst.i.tute lord, Claude, typically is the one who should be dealing with intruders . Should being the opportune word . But in reality, the only people who tried to do anything were the maid, Marie, and Torneo, the manservant . I can’t even begin to guess why, but it does seem like this old gentleman had at the very least observed everything from a distance .
‘He must have been the one who had let my friends into the house to begin with!’ I think to myself, and when I glance up at Claude he grins at me . I swear! Sometimes he seems to have this dreadful ability to read my thoughts .
“Thanks, Claude . ”
“Oh? Whatever for, I wonder?” he says broadening his smile . As a way of reply, I just laugh and walk over to take a seat by the desk .
“Well then, let’s start from where you left off yesterday . Please read through and put your seal of approval on these doc.u.ments . Once you are all done, I will check them over for you . ”
“Okay . Sounds good . Please help me out today as well . ”
I’m quite content with my current life . I could not be more thankful for what my friends did for me . And they told me that once they have settled down, they will be sure to secretly write letters to me . That probably won’t be for a while yet, but I already can’t wait to read them .
