Chapter 30 - I’ve got this Ancestor’s back (1)
Chapter 30: I’ve got this Ancestor’s back (1)
After the protagonist appears, the world line will automatically correct its course and center around the protagonist. Supporting actors who do not partic.i.p.ate in the main line can un.o.btrusively fade out of the plot at any time.
Although they had already become part of the background, the two of them still stayed in this world for seven years, making their rounds of the top journals. After taking all their recruited doctorate and graduate students to graduation, they finally departed from this world under the pretext of studying abroad.
Back in the main world, Lu Deng gave the system a red envelope of 1,000 points and specially ordered a brand new internal memory strip and a set of cool system skins for it. In this way, the system that had been checking seven years’ worth of homework immediately cheered up from its mire of depression.
“I have been promoted to the second level and the host will no longer need to carry a schoolbag!”
The system cheered up and enthusiastically introduced the upgraded functions, “I’ve also added the data import function— the host can directly use his own data to make appropriate adjustments to parameters such as height, weight, appearance and physical fitness. So long as the setting isn’t too drastic, there won’t be any problem!”
Lu Deng smiled and nodded patiently. He added a five-star review in the mall in his stead and opened the new world that Gu Yuan was thrown into.
This was a futuristic world that was somewhat similar to the world he was in but not exactly the same.
In the course of human evolution, because the universe in which they were in is swept by different energies, humans have evolved many special abilities that surpa.s.sed nature.
About 70% of humans have supernatural powers. There were strong abilities and weak abilities, but most of them came in handy in life. With the combination of technology and supernatural abilities, countless otherwise impossible technologies have become reality. Economics and art have developed by leaps and bounds.
Among the populace, some people have b.l.o.o.d.y cross marks on their bodies called “stigmata”.
Less than one in a thousand humans have a stigmata but all of them have powerful supernatural abilities of S rank or above. Most of them were recruited by the government to accept special dispatch missions.
Maybe because they were affected by the supernatural abilities of the humans, many races that previously existed only in legends have awakened. Traces of bizarre races such as werewolves and vampires, attracted by the unique technological power of humans, have begun to frequently appear in the cities where humans live.
For a time, conflicting views between different races caused turmoil and wars in the world.
After a long period of chaos, the government and the country were re-established and order was restored. All races lived in harmony in the prosperous future city. However, there were still some extremely dangerous targets that were kept under special surveillance.
The department responsible for monitoring was dubbed by the people as the Special Service Office. The main story of this world revolved around Fang Yi, the new power-type stigmatic who joined the Special Service Office and the development of a pile of cases that he encountered.
The cannon fodder he was going to save this time was named Gu Ting. In the city, his ident.i.ty was that of a freelance photographer. But in actuality, he was actually a pure-blooded vampire, living among humans. Because of his excessive strength, the Special Service Office placed a seal on him and kept him under monitoring.
Once, while he was out snapping photos, he happened to encounter an out-of-control supernatural being going on a killing spree on a pleasure boat. Gu Ting forced an explosion of power to rescue the entire boatload of pa.s.sengers. However, he was mistakenly taken for the murderer by the Special Service Office who had rushed to the scene and was attacked.
At the time, the protagonist was off dealing with another case. He had rushed to the scene and discovered the actual situation. He then rescued the seriously injured Gu Ting and sent him to a special inst.i.tution for emergency treatment.
This case, together with several cases occurring within the same period, caused widespread controversy among the public and therefore led to the second revision of the “Peaceful Coexistence Bill”.
The law had been refined and improved. The races have finally achieved a greater degree of protection and trust. However, due to the complete fragmentation of his blood nucleus, all electrical activity in Gu Ting’s brain stopped when the bill was promulgated and he fell into an eternal slumber.
While Lu Deng was reading the mission briefing, the system took the opportunity to enter the world first and to explore a bit. It excitedly reported back, “The schools in this world teach supernatural powers. So, there definitely won’t be any homework!”
Having already experienced the deep shadow the system has towards homework, Lu Deng was also similarly, deeply moved. He smiled and nodded. He raised his hand to connect with the import interface. “Help me buy a dark coloring agent and adjust the position of the stigmata to be more concealed.”
The system was slightly startled. “You’re not going in as a vampire?”
His eyes fell on the gray un-selectable blood race b.u.t.ton. Lu Deng continued to import the data and shook his head lightly.
There were special abilities set in his own original data and because it was a pure life attribute, which was naturally opposed to the power of the vampires, there was no way to successfully complete the transformation.
Although the memories related to his abilities could hardly be considered pleasant, it was his own body after all, and he was able to use them quite smoothly. It can also help him to avoid falling into a situation where he finds himself overworked to the point of collapse or powerlessness like in the previous two worlds. This new world has a certain degree of danger and using his original data would provide him with better a.s.surance.
Besidesk2014;bad memories can be covered and erased.
Thinking of that warm kiss that would cover him every night, a pale warmth soaked into Lu Deng’s eyes and carefully tied the little bell around his wrist. “Help me join the Special Service Office and make it so that I’d be personally responsible for monitoring Gu Ting.”
“Host—You’ll be joining the Special Service Office?”
The system’s buffering icon rotated twice and then hesitantly reminded, “The Special Service Office currently has a very tough stance towards people from the different races. There are still many conflicts between the two sides that happen in private. Surveillance is carried out under with the agent’s ident.i.ty hidden and should you chose this ident.i.ty it would almost be completely opposed to the target person’s… ”
“It’s alright.”
Lu Deng raised his head, looked at the 99% progress bar, and responded patiently.
Nothing will change just because of their different positions.
It was precisely because the Special Service Office has a tough att.i.tude towards non-human and was the main source of threats that he should first intercept this job so that he will better be able to protect the other.
Regardless of their positions, they will be the same.
Seeing that he had made up his mind, the system quickly responded and began world preparations.
Lu Deng had already finished importing the data. He didn’t make too many changes. He just raised his height by three centimeters and then stepped into the starry sky.
*
The night was quiet.
The dark blue vault of heaven was embedded with fine stars. Modern skysc.r.a.pers crowded the city. The clouds weren’t dense but a drizzle was falling. Suspended lights shone into the darkness, reflecting warm shadows onto the pooling water.
The whole city was rich and flourishing. People who weren’t in the know would never think that there were still many non-human races hidden in it.
The young man carrying a drawing board on his back hurriedly walked through the drizzle. Under his short black hair, his complexion looked exceptionally pale. His ink-colored eyes reflected in the rain, the faint color of blood would occasionally flash through them.
Though he was surrounded by an aura belonging to a high-ranking vampire, he still looked very weak in the rain. Instead, he was like a thin-blooded offspring left behind by a certain high-rank pure blood.
“Host…is this really okay?”
Despite the careful arrangements of the Special Service Office, the system was still worried. “Without the vampiric contact lenses, like this, you will most certainly be found out almost immediately…”
Lu Deng blinked his eyes. Before he could respond, there was a sudden rush of wind and a figure suddenly rushed down towards him.
The daytime was the domain of humans. During such a silent rainy night, non-human races would return to their original forms and quietly move about. A lone vampiric offspring was undoubtedly the best food source for many races.
It’s been a long time since he’s fought in his original body. Lu Deng’s eyes shone brightly. He was about to take a step back and deliver a move against the attacker when a pure blackness suddenly had him wrapped up tightly.
The familiar aura wrapped him from head to toe. The surroundings suddenly turned silent and he was completely isolated from the drizzling rain.
The darkness’ majestic power easily chased the sudden attacker away. A tall pure-blood vampire leaned slightly. His eyes fell on Lu Deng’s body. With much interest, he sized up this black-haired youth that carried his own aura.
Lu Deng raised his head, a woody tendril quietly shrank back into his cuff. He met those eyes and an indiscernible furrow appeared on his brow.
So careless.
He had already increased his height by three centimeters beforehand but now it was obvious that the other had raised his height by even more than he had.
The pure-blooded vampires were already capricious to begin with, to say nothing of a three-generation ancestor level member of the blood race. The system was frightened into garbled code. Afraid that its host might get injured, it hurriedly searched for a weapon that could be used for self defense while also reminding its hold to be extra careful.
Gu Ting looked down at him and saw the subtle, barely noticeable lines between the youth’s soft brows. He raised his eyebrows slightly and he raised his hand to gently smooth away the wrinkles for him. “Name?”
His fingertips were cool but the touch on his forehead was still gentle. Lu Deng smoothened his brow and looked up at him. “Lu Huaiye.”
The system has already helped him to import his ident.i.ty. He was called Lu Huaiye in this world. He was a member of the special operations team of the Special Service Office. He was responsible for disguising himself as Gu Ting’s descendant and conducting in-person close monitoring on Gu Ting.
In any case, someone would need to monitor him; so instead of letting someone else do it, which would be a potential danger to Gu Ting at any time, it was better to immediately seize this task for both convenience and safety.
“According to the smell on your body, you should be my offspring.”
The corners of Gu Ting’s lips ticked up. He wrapped his arm around the young man’s seemingly, for a vampire, exceedingly frail body. His voice low, mellow and magnetic, he said, “Did you come to find me?”
The tall figure slightly closed in, covering him intimately, blocking off the rain. It was like a very gentle and elegant hug, though their bodies weren’t actually touching. As before, they were still separated by a polite distance.
Lu Deng could see that a slight change in the direction of his arm could turn it into a deadly move.
It seemed that the other party wasn’t relaxed at all. If Lu Deng hadn’t come directly, who knows have many times he might get probed out and monitored.
Thinking of what happened in the first world, Lu Deng nodded, and looked at the man’s face with features so handsome, they looked as though they’d been carved with a knife. The corners of his lips pursed silently.
This time Lu Deng really was an agent who was hostile to him.
Gu Ting was still holding onto his chin. There was hardly any warmth in his eyes. The corners of his lips suddenly rose into a mischievous arc and he suddenly leaned over and drew close to his ear, “Call me ‘father’.”
Lu Deng: “……”
System: “……”
System: “Host, I have garlic cloves here——”
“Gu Ting.”
Interrupting the voice in his mind, Lu Deng looked up at Gu Ting and called out his name clearly. Lu Deng held his wrist with one hand. “Take me home.”
Lu Deng had come, so now, he can protect him.
He can protect him well.
An unfamiliar touch fell on the wrist. Gu Ting lowered his gaze. A light flashed through in his eyes and his chest suddenly stagnated. Suddenly, he couldn’t form the least bit of wariness.
Those black eyes were clear and stubborn, staring at him seriously.
They were unlike the completely black pupils of members of the blood race. These eyes could still reflect the subtle and soft light. Met with that flash of starlight, it quietly covered his heart.
For some inexplicable reason, Gu Ting actually nodded. He held his hand as well and gathered the person into his arms. “Okay.”
Sending people to him like this, the Special Service Office came up with a good idea. However, although his position in the vampiric family hierarchy was high, since his birth, he had been sealed and had lain in slumber. He was awakened by the influence of the supernatural abilities. He opened his eyes to this future society with floating vehicles and tall buildings. Not to mention that his first embrace was of this kind that could obviously be suspected as him trying to kidnap and sell someone, he had never even bitten anyone before. So, how could he possibly have any offspring?
There would always be someone monitoring him. If not this one, there will be the next one.
In that case, he should just take one back.
Explaining away his sudden soft-heartedness in this way, Gu Ting wrapped his cold body with the cloak. He imagined in his heart how this body would feel when it had human temperature. His figure quietly submerged into the rainy night.
When Lu Deng could see in front of him once again, he had already been placed in a villa.
The decoration of the villa could be considered as ordinary. Except for the fact that it gave off a very old-fashioned, aged feeling, you wouldn’t find the slightest vampiric-style.
The beige carpet was soft to the touch. The pale yellow light exuded warmth. A fire burned quietly in the medieval fireplace. Occasionally, there would be the crackling of flames. Two sofas faced each other in silence by the fireplace and on the coffee table, there were some simple refreshments.
Despite the fact that member of the blood race cannot leave any images, Gu Ting’s ident.i.ty in the human world was actually a photographer.
There are many photographs hanging on the walls, most of which were of breathtaking sceneries. There were also some of people, either by themselves or in groups, simply smiling at the camera, perhaps without knowing that the person standing behind the camera was a non-human.
Lu Deng was placed on the sofa. Gu Ting’s eyes were still on him.
Perhaps it because they had returned to an environment familiar to him, the cold aura on the high-ranking vampire dissipated a bit. The black pupils even faintly showed warmth from the reflection of the fireplace.
Seeing him intently examining the photos, Gu Ting didn’t rush to speak out. He sat down on the sofa, added some tea to the cup for him, and his tone soft, asked, “Are you cold?”
The color of the water poured into the teacup was dark red. Without batting an eyelash, Lu Deng took a sip from the teacup and shook his head gently.
Strawberry flavored.
Seeing his movements, Gu Ting raised his eyebrows. A smile seeped at the corners of his lips. He bowed his head and poured a cup of tea for himself. “Since you are my offspring, I should guide you.”
New members of the blood race all need the teachings of their patriarchal elders. It wasn’t an exaggeration to call Gu Ting his ancestor according to the concentration of blood aura in Lu Deng. He had no right to refuse what Gu Ting said.
Lu Deng doesn’t really care whether he can stick to his disguised ident.i.ty or not. But, after all, he couldn’t let the secret slip on the very first day. Thinking of the ident.i.ty he had chosen, he nodded slightly and raised his head to meet his gaze.
The first thing to teach was that the offspring cannot look directly at their elder.
But…this one was outdated and could be skipped.
Meeting those eyes, Gu Ting didn’t look away anymore. He gathered the entire person in his sight and stared for a moment. His attention was suddenly drawn by the drawing board behind him. “You can paint?”
According to the information gathered by the Special Service Office, Gu Ting was in need of an a.s.sistant with artistic skills to a.s.sist in his photography and to partic.i.p.ate in the post-editing and production of photos.
Lu Deng didn’t want this a.s.sistant position to be filled in by someone else. Lu Deng nodded and added, “I can also garden.”
Gu Ting, who happened to also need a gardener, raised his eyebrows slightly. Looking at the seemingly overly-blunt young man, he let out a quiet chuckle.
Lu Deng didn’t move and remained quietly watching him.
Smile still on his face, Gu Ting suddenly leaned in and caged him between his arms and the sofa. Mysterious waves undulated in his eyes. “What else can you do?”
High-ranking members of the blood race always have some innate talent. For him, so long as he was staring directly into another’s eyes, he could hypnotize any creature. This little human with cosmetic contact lenses before him was no exception.
The tall body suddenly approached, but no warmth or breath could be detected.
Although Lu Deng knew his lack of warmth and breath was due to the other’s ident.i.ty as a vampire, he suddenly felt sad. Lu Deng blinked, his eyes dazzled under the gaze of those eyes. He then suddenly raised his arms to hug him, and turned his head up to cover Gu Ting’s pale lips with his own.
