Keys To The Gate

Chapter 7

The five people followed the river of acid back to its source. Tristan kept feeling that he was being watched, but made no mention of it, just keeping his vigilance up.

On the way they saw a few small plants growing on the bank of the acidic river. They seemed very full of life, but emitted a toxic aura themselves. The group was sure that eating it would lead to death. Still, one of them tried to pluck a leaf and suffered a burn simply on touching it. The acid was terrifying.

As the group moved forward, they found the same plant again. But it seemed like the king of those acidic plants. It was strong and vibrantly flourishing under the absorption of the acidic river. The entire plant emitted out an extremely terrifying acidic aura, even going near it might corrode a person.

However, the plant had bloomed and had formed an extremely ripe red fruit. It was a tomato. The tomato itself looked extremely delicious and appealing. It was no ordinary fruit and didn"t get affected by the acidic aura at all.

The leader of the blue beetle was tempted. He took a stick and tried to prod the fruit, but as the stick came near the plant it melted away in seconds. "What a terrifying corrosion force!" He lamented.

With the powerful corrosion there was no way to obtain that tomato and the four blue beetle members were sad. However, they saw that White Star wasn"t even looking at the tomato, he just kept staring behind them. They turned around to see a thin humanoid figure.

The thin humanoid figure was gray in color. It had a mouth but no teeth, only showing its gums as it smiled creepily. No hair, no nails. But Otherwise it looked like a silver colored human. Tristan had a chill in his heart. This was the individual who had been watching him all this time.

The blue beetle leader gulped. "What... are you?"

When the silver humanoid heard that question, it smiled. Then... it spoke. "I am a human like you, but different. I am a human from the Battle Body World. One of the few still living remnants of that horrifying war."

The others were horrified. Tristan cautiously asked. "Human? You"ve been following us since we entered this world, I didn"t sense any hostility from you so I didn"t say anything earlier. What do you want?"

The gray human was also shocked. "You could sense me all along, you aren"t ordinary. Although you are a weakling, you are strong as well. Very mysterious." He paused for a bit. "I am indeed a human. I have cultivated the Battle Body cultivation practice and as a result have to abandon any part of the body that isn"t purely muscle. I do not have bones, teeth, hair or nails, which is why I look like this.

As for why I followed your group, I need your help. If you help me I can give you many golden fruits."

Tristan grew cautious. "You are much more stronger than us, how could we possibly help you?"

The gray humanoid smiled and said. "Good. The place I need you to go restricts entry to weaklings like yourself. I want you to give me an item from inside that place. I don"t have much hope from the other four weaklings, but you might be able to do it." He said as he looked at Tristan.

Tristan thought for a bit. This so called human wasn"t hostile to them at the moment, but did he really have a choice? So he agreed. "Okay, I"ll do it, but you must let the other four go."

The gray colored human didn"t mind. "I don"t care about those four. They can leave." He waved his creepy hand. The blue beetle group looked at Tristan. "White Star... are you really alright with this?"

Tristan nodded. "I have my own plans as well. You can think about exploring some other part of the ruin. I"ll make my way back later."

The other four looked at each other before the blue beetle leader spoke. "Thank you White Star... I think we will abandon this visit and return." Tristan half expected them to behave that way, he knew he couldn"t trust these people, especially when such a strong existence is roaming around within this fragment.

The four rushed back, without even giving Tristan a map. The gray colored man laughed. "My name is Last Resort. Take this fruit, it is not half bad, but it only gives an effect once."

When Tristan heard that name he wondered if Battle Body World was full of chuuni people, but didn"t say anything. But then he looked in shock as Last Resort calmly plucked the tomato off the highly corrosive tree, completely unarmed. Then he tossed the tomato to Tristan, who caught it.

[Frightening Tomato - consuming it can have surprising effects.]

The system did not have any option to absorb the tomato. The name of the tomato gave Tristan a fright. However, Last Resort was looking at him expectantly, so he closed his eyes and bit into the tomato.

The frightening tomato instantly dissolved in his mouth and then an extremely sour taste invaded his mind before subsiding. Surprisingly his System spoke up at this moment.

[Corrosion Resistance +10%]

[Physique Trait unlocked]

Tristan was surprised and called status within his mind.

[Race: Human]

[Evolution: None]

[Progress: 89%]

[Physique: Corrosion Resistance 10%]

The tomato actually unlocked a physical trait of the body. He looked at Last Resort.

"What did the fruit do to me?" Tristan asked. Last Resort laughed. "Was it good? It increases your body"s ability to resist corrosion. Unfortunately it can only be had once with any real effect."

The two walked on, towards the source of the acidic river, when they finally found the source. When Tristan saw it he was horrified. The river of acid actually was oozing out of a gigantic carca.s.s. The carca.s.s was extremely gigantic, taller and wider than any mountain he had ever seen. It"s shape couldn"t be made out, but it looked like a mammoth, but it had no hair.

"What...in the world..." Tristan said, shocked.

"This... thing... is a secret of the Battle Body World. No one knows how old this carca.s.s is, only that it"s body is so strong that nothing can even scratch it. Shockingly, it actually seems to have died from being pierced into its heart, no one knows what could have managed to pierce this indestructible body. This creature... predates the Battle Body Civilization, and myths say that the cultivation techniques originated from this creature. The War which let to this destruction was to capture the land in which this carca.s.s lay." Last Resort said, with emotion.

Tristan looked on, stunned. An ancient beast, whose age of death itself couldn"t be determined how many millions of years have pa.s.sed. "Isn"t this the greatest treasure that exists in this fragment?" He asked.

Last Resort shook his head. "Perhaps. But our battle body world had no known way to use this carca.s.s, it is the toughest flesh there is."

Tristan shook his head. He quietly went close to the carca.s.s and touched it. It was literally a mountain and felt like he was touching a pillar of granite.
