Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan:Volume 1 Chapter 1Status: Incomplete

A heavy door left ajar, clearly lighted by artificial means. A room so large that one could not see the end of it, and a large storage shed blocking the way. The silent s.p.a.ce without organic matter continued to expand in the large warehouse.
And sitting on an empty container in the corner of such a s.p.a.ce was a skinny delinquent. The golden-haired fellow Year 2 Guardian in the same platoon - Lloyd Allwin - was only just aware of his presence.
“I thought that I would only meet you when I decide to ask you out for dinner on occasion. I definitely didn’t expect to find you here.”
“Hey Lloyd. Great timing. Here, have a look at this.”
Saying this, the youth sitting on the containers - Kanata - pa.s.sed a stack of approximately ten doc.u.ments clipped together to Lloyd.
“What are these?”
Lloyd, who flipped through the doc.u.ments one by one, looked increasingly confused.
“You’ll know it when you see it. This is a inventory of the items listed in the warehouse and a comparison to the actual stock.”
“Inventory… Is it really as simple you say?”
While saying that, Lloyd glanced at the endless row of storage sheds lighted artificially.
To inventory everything once is something that would normally take ten Logistics students the whole day to complete. At the very least, this was not something that could be completed alone…
“I figured that the actual stock compared to the actual inventory of the items were a little different… It seems the students in Machina broke the lock and snuck in, so I taught them a small lesson. Also, it seems that the purity of the mithril has dropped… I’ve already complained to the guys at Industrial.”
Well this wasn’t something to be proud of, Kanata replied blandly.
It might have seemed like something straightforward, but in truth it wasn’t that simple.
The foodstock in the warehouse was actually meant for all the citizens of Mistgun. In other words, it was something meant to maintain the daily lives of 6000 people. Even an outsider to the system like Lloyd knew that stealing a small amount of the food was something that wouldn’t be easily discovered.
“I didn’t manage to find anyone else who was responsible for the maintenance of the warehouse, so are you telling me that you managed to inventory such a huge amount of products?”
“Hm? Why ask such an obvious question? No one would help a traitor like me after all.”
“Being able to sort all these items quickly alone as if it was nothing, that’s really amazing… Speaking of which, there have been rumors that you’re helping Logistics in preparation for a change in course, ya know?”
“Don’t know about that. Besides, I don’t think anyone would spend half a year working here specially just to request a transfer.”
“Everyone around you doesn’t really understand your actions. The things you’re supposed to do and the things you actually do are quite surprising, and it only helps to confuse others. It’s even worse that you’re not even trying to clear up any misunderstandings.”
“Eh? And what’s so bad about that?”
“Well…”
Lloyd couldn’t bring up anything regarding that incident. While he still blamed Kanata over it, he didn"t bring it up since he had a vague feeling that Kanata felt the same way.
“While this may be just a personal opinion, because there are over 7000 items in the warehouse, I still don’t think its possible to create and maintain an inventory of it.”
“I’m being serious.”
“Well then your definition of ‘serious’ is really crazy, isn’t it?”
“Are you here to pick a fight with me?”
“Haha, I’m kidding. How bout we have dinner together? On you, of course.”
“Huh? Why must I treat you to dinner?”
“This is a reward for the one of your few friends who willingly came here to find you. Wouldn’t it be an obvious thing to do?”
The natural enemies of humans who appeared without warning - The magical armored beetles.
According to records, they can be traced to somewhere before the fourth century, but the true intentions of the beetles are not clear. Neither is why such an advanced organism would exist.
However, faced with such an organism with a cursed power, the weapons developed by humanity were unable to stand up to it, and it only resulted in a one-sided ma.s.sacre by the beetles. Finally, the humans were driven out of almost all of their land. Moreover, this was no simple ma.s.sacre. Those killed by the beetles would disappear from the memories of those around them. This was the cruel, yet compa.s.sionate way of killing by the beetles.
And then, the last of the soon-to-be-eliminated humans used their final powers and created Fuyuki City, the floating city, which combined science and magic. This allowed the humans to continue living among the skies.
The top half was as if a city was dug out and placed on top, covered by a giant egg-shaped membrane. What was keeping this city in the air was three inverted cone-shaped flying stones, and a slowly-rotating giant ring made out of Lunar t.i.tanite.
Besides the normal facilities that were present when the humans were living on the ground, even more facilities were added to Fuyuki City. That’s was why even when the humans were living on a floating city, they were still able to engage in various economic activities just like before.
And on this floating city lived the protectors of the skies.
Most of the people will lose all memories regarding those killed by the beetles, but they are the minority that remember the fallen.
They use the power they were born with, along with their flesh and blood, to wage eternal battle with the magical armored beetles. Soaring among the boundless skies, the only humans with the power to challenge the beetles - Wizards. Protecting the humans from their natural enemies, remembering the dead and bearing the sorrow of their demise. Among them, held as treasures throughout the floating city, there are wizards specially for the protection of humans - those named the Aerial Combat Wizards. However, owing to the severe lack of such Aerial Combat Wizards, in order to develop and nurture them, an Academy was set up in Fuyuki City for this very purpose.
And that is, the floating academy, .An academy specially set up for the development of the Aerial Combat Wizards in view of the war against the magical armored beetles.
Under the rays of sunlight, Kanata was lazily stretching, and the badge on his collar, reading , had long become the mark of a lone wolf.It was probably because of the a.s.sistance rendered to Logistics which lasted until late at night, that watching the students from Artemia dormitory going to school - normally a journey which did not last very long - made one lazy.
School had already started for a year. and at this juncture where most of the freshmen had already comfortably settled in, Kanata lazily ambled through the pathway made up of stone boards and conifers. At that moment, a flying black shadow came flying from around the corner--
“Geh…”
“Ehh…!”
When Kanata had noticed, his line of sight had already been completely blocked out by the shadow, and moreover it had been rapidly approaching. And then they had ran into each other, and that was how Kanata ended up in such the predicament of b.u.mping into an airhead.
“Oww…!”
“I say, watch where--”
Kanata, having almost been ran over by a truck, ignored the pain and gently moved his neck. And the other person in his vision, the girl with brilliant red long hair--
“You’re going…”
The red-haired girl sat like a horseman [1], and Kanata’s hands was pressing against the girl’s chest. After moving his eyes slightly further up, both pairs of eyes finally met.
“I really wonder where…”
“You, You better not call me a Pe-Pettanko!”
“Ah, No… even though it appears to be the case…”
“Lowlife!”
“But you were the one who brought it up!”
It had been too late when when Kanata touched it, but he was able to feel just a slight roundedness. That was enough to let a boy like him know that the person before him was most definitely a girl. Just when Kanata felt that this was inappropriate and was going to remove his hands from the girl’s chest, the redheaded girl forcefully pulled them away.
“Ta-take your hands off me!”
Kanata, who had been trying to reposition himself, had been hit at the back of the head. How unreasonable.
“Speaking of which, where were YOU looking while walking?”
The girl that stood up was shorter than Kanata, and her uniform was also different. It wasn’t that of a soph.o.m.ore like Kanata, but that of a freshman.
Despite this, the girl stared at the older Kanata, as if she had a point to prove, and had even spoken up.
“It’s obviously due to your negligence.”
Kanata, who had sat up, continued to rub his throbbing head while reb.u.t.ting the girl. While his lower body felt a bit strange, his head undoubtably hurt more.
