"Haaais," I sigh to myself. "I"m making progress, but toward what end?"

You"re back, I see! I would normally welcome you, with open arms, but I"m just not feeling any good about the way I"ve been living this past week and a half.

Oh, no, it"s not like I"m in any big trouble - like last time - I"m just a little lost. What exactly am I here to do? They say that "a man without purpose is a man without life." Now, even though I will proudly tell anyone that my 25 years on Earth have been lived to the fullest of my ability, I just don"t have it in me to feel the same way about my life inside the world of my favourite JRPG video game, Veronicle.

I wonder if other transmigrators, the ones that are told to go vanquish the Demon Lords, or find the lost Legendary Weapons of distant lands, ever find themselves sitting on the porch of a random town"s inn, racking their brains about the philosophy behind living a fulfilling life?

Probably not, huh?

They probably all have too much fun, fighting for their kingdoms and saving princesses, to even find the time to sit down - let alone think about anything.

Now that I think about it, in most of the transmigration light novels that I"ve read, the MC is usually still in their teens. What normal teenager would ever waste their time philosophising over their own lives? They"re all too busy trying to get their p.e.c.k.e.rs wet.

"Haaaais," I sigh to myself again, before standing up and patting down the back of my tunic. "No need to think so much, I suppose. There"s work to do, and I still have that [Quest] to save up some money!"

"Who are you talking to?" Heather pops her head into my vision, from the side, scaring the pants off of me. She follows my line of sight, to see what I"m looking at. "Are you one of those weird people who talk to themselves all the time, little Theo?"

"You!!" I exclaim, my face twisting in anger. "What are you doing here? Don"t think I"ve forgotten about last time!"

"Yes," the she-demon continues, her lips curving up into an evil grin. "I remember last time someone had screamed out that they were "nowhere close to being half as perverted" as a father-daughter couple, no?"

"..." I gulp nervously, turning my head away slowly.

"Well, I guess my memory could just be hazy from when the fight broke out."

"Yes! That"s it!" I nod my head vigorously in agreement, hoping to appease this succubus that has somehow come to hold my life in her hands. "You must still be feeling weary from such a stressful event. Come, let me ma.s.sage your shoulders~"

The tension in the air lifts as I watch Heather laughing along with my foolishness for the first time. Her dark brown hair glows lightly in the afternoon sunlight. If I were a galge gamer, instead of a freak who loves punishingly hard games like Sekino, I would see this as the start of a love flag.

⌈ QUEST

Lover"s in Paradise

RAN---

OH NO YOU DON"T!!

Mentally waving away the [Quest] pop-up in my head, with a fervor like you"ve never seen before, my hate for this world and this system rises by another level. Just what does this world have against me, that it keeps spouting out nonsense that only the lowest tier of light novel authors could make up?

"Honey~ I"m home~" a deep and flamboyant voice echoes through the inn. "Oh, my G.o.ddess. This place is looking spectacular as usual."

And, as if on cue, the combo-finisher giant inn owner comes back from yet another outing.

"Daddy," Heather says, rushing to the Bulk and giving him a hug. "Did you get me anything from your trip to the other side of town?"

"More and more people and adventurers are coming through Golem Town these days," the giant says, trying to get past his gold-digging daughter. "The market is really busy."

"Everyone"s a new face to me," I say, leaning forward and resting my head on my crossed arms. "Did anything interesting happen?"

I like to think that the past week and a half have brought the three of us closer to one another. Small talk, like this, has already become a norm for me. Chatting to my viewers, whenever I live-stream online, is second nature.

"Hmm, not really," Keith says dismissively, before continuing on. "Ah, I did overhear some talk about the town"s lack of lumber having an effect on those from the carpenters and smithing trades. Apparently, out in the woods, the beasts are making it hard for the lumberers and jacks to make any headway in building the town"s stock."

"Oh, yeah. I"ve heard my mentor complaining about that at the workshop I"ve been going to for the last couple of days."

[SKILL] Woodwork LVL2

Among the few (useless) [Skills] that I have, the Woodwork, Smithing, and Cooking skills had yet to be touched. I"m sure you can understand that, being suddenly dumped in a new world, it can be a little while before one would relax enough to try and explore more of their surroundings and figure out what they can do, right?

I"m not ashamed to say that, before praying to the G.o.ddess to somehow smite these two father and daughter duo, I spend some time in looking at my [Status] page. What gamer wouldn"t try to plan out their next step? It"s just that, with a [Skill] list such as mine... I can"t see how I can accomplish what the original goal of Veronicle, the game, was: beating the final boss and saving the world.

Thus, as I stare at the spotless inn room ceiling - that I cleaned, by the way - I think of what I would normally do when I"m stuck in a JRPG.

Grind.

Grinding is fun! Grinding is great! Grinding is what makes a JRPG!

Who wouldn"t love spending ten hours in a single area, going back and forth, killing the same few monsters over and over to level up enough to power their way through the next couple of hours of story? What are you, sane? Pfft!

"Does this town have carpenters or smithies," I had asked Keith a few days ago, as we were working in the kitchen. "I want to try my hand at making stuff."

"Oh~? Do you want to learn a trade, young man?" his deep voice loftily drifted through the kitchen. I shuddered.

"I don"t really know what I want to do," I answered him, my hands busy with making the evening"s soup. "Hanging around the inn all day isn"t doing it for me anymore, so I need other things to do to get aw- to keep myself occupied."

"Well, the inn has never looked better," the giant said, rubbing his chin in deep thought. "I suppose I could introduce you to a few of my good friends who deal with carpentry and smithing."

"Really?"

"Of course~"

"..." please. Don"t do that when it"s just the two of us here.

After breakfast, the next morning, Keith and I left the demoness at the inn and made our way toward the commercial side of Golem Town - the Business District.

As I walked through the town with Keith, swiping away his hand every time it reached for mine, I saw how Golem Town looked for the first time. Although the scenery that I"m used to from Earth was nowhere to be seen, the lack of technology and gadgets allowed the township to show-off its charming side.

Most buildings are made of stone bricks and timber, as expected from the era that Veronicle is set in. The houses are two storeys high, some of them having cross-road bridges suspended in the air to connect the two. Having grown up knowing only of apartment architecture, and living in an overpopulated city in a more advanced time, it was refreshing enough for me to get lost in awe at this new world.

Even in the game, when the player traversed towns throughout Riveria, there wasn"t much time to stand around admiring the scenery - unless you wanted a Death Knight to rush up and stab you from behind with a ma.s.sive two-handed sword.

Hi. A note from me, the author. I"ve had this in draft for a while, and I"ve decided I"m discontinuing the story. Thanks for reading. Bye.
