Lu Xinyi was confused, but she knew that it wasn’t the right time to ask questions. Instead, she leaned closer to her husband and lowly whispered.
“You know about this, don’t you?”
It would be impossible for Shen Yi not to know her family relations, for he’d already run a background investigation on her.
Shen Yi answered with a nod. He was also startled to know that Lu Xinyi’s mother hadn’t introduced her daughter to the Tangs for whatever reason.
“Please don’t tell me there’s more that I don’t know about.”
Her jaw tightened, and her grasp on his arm loosened. She didn’t like it when people leave her in the dark.
“I’ll answer every question you have later,” Shen Yi promised.
Later. Because for now, Lu Xinyi had to face Chairman Sun.
A nervous smile appeared on Sun Qiyan’s face. There was this alarm in her mind that told her today wouldn’t be easy for her.
“Feiyan! You better make sure Emporium News will never partic.i.p.ate in any of our future events again.” Chairman Sun insisted.
Sun Feiyan glanced on Sun Qiyan’s way, knowing well that she was the reason why the chairman was throwing a fit now.
“Yes, Grandpa. Qiyan and I will make sure no one will insult our family’s Xin’er again.”
“Yes, Chairman. This will never happen again,” Sun Qiyan followed her cousin’s lead. If it wasn’t for Chairman Sun standing near her, she wouldn’t regard Lu Xinyi at all.
Lu Xinyi wanted to puke from all these cringe-worthy promises from her cousins. Ha! Now they’re treating her as a family member? Her eyes then landed back on Sun Qiyan.
This woman… did she really know the concept of family at all? Just remembering what kind of h.e.l.l Qiushan suffered was enough for Lu Xinyi to boil with rage.
“Xin’er, can I have a word with you?” The old man’s voice was almost pleading. His anger grew forgotten once he remembered that his most treasured granddaughter had finally decided to come back.
Lu Xinyi shot a hateful glare at Chairman Sun. All of these problems were this old man’s fault, unable to control his lower part, sowing wild seeds outside, and even bringing back his wretched children. No wonder her maternal grandmother divorced him after her mother’s birth. It seemed that rumors are just rumors, and Lu Xinyi decided to find out the truth about the Sun family soon.
“Xin’er,” Chairman Sun called her out again with pleading eyes. He was slightly dazed as he looked at this granddaughter of his. He was still somehow in disbelief that she was here.
Lu Xinyi sighed and released her husband’s arm. Shen Yi leaned forward and placed a chaste kiss on her forehead.
“I’ll be here. I’ll accompany your Uncle Shui for a while. Call me if you need anything,” he reminded her.
Lu Xinyi nodded, though her face was one with displeasure.
“Lead the way,” she told Sun Feiyan.
Sun Feiyan helped her grandfather and led them upstairs. Her long white skirt trailed behind her, leaving a good impression on everyone who sees her. She had this magnanimous stance and elegant radiance that everyone appreciated.
Following behind them was Lu Xinyi in her fiery red dress. Some were also shocked by her sudden appearance; they didn’t expect that someone else from the Sun family could compete with Sun Feiyan’s beauty and elegance.
She slowly walked past the crowd with her chin up, refusing to show weakness in front of everyone. Those who saw her closely would gasp and be left flabbergasted.
“Ha! I agree with President Shen; that reporter must be really blind. Didn’t he say Lu Xinyi is an ugly woman?”
“One must be really blind if they think Lu Xinyi is ugly. If her ugliness is enough to catch President Shen’s attention, then the other women must be uglier than her.”
“Was she really the third miss of the Sun family? Then, why did she chose to represent the Shen family at Silver Leaf Academy than her own?”
“Is that really Lu Xinyi? How come I’ve never seen her attend Sun family’s events before?”
“You don’t know? Her mother and her grandfather were never in good terms after he took in his other children from his mistress. Who wouldn’t hate their father who caused heartache to their mother?”
“Sun Meixiu probably refused to a.s.sociate her daughter with the Suns.”
“Neither did she choose the Tang family. I wonder why she rejected both families.”
—
Lu Xinyi stepped inside a study room after following the old man and her cousins. Inside, she saw an old woman in her fifties, sitting on the couch with a man standing behind her. Once the old woman saw Chairman Sun arrived, she stood up and greeted the old man.
“Father, I heard the news. Lu Xinyi really come back?”
Chairman Sun nodded. A glimpse of pride showed on his face.
“She’s here.” Then, he turned to Lu Xinyi who showed disinterest to everyone around her.
Sun Mingai was taken aback. Her eyes landed on Lu Xinyi, and she was shocked by her appearance.
“This…”
Just as she expected, Lu Xinyi really resembled her dead sister! Seeing Lu Xinyi’s face personally, Sun Mingai’s face instantly darkened. Sun Meixiu had been long dead, but she was still able to anger Sun Mingai to death.
“You must be Lu Xinyi. I’m your mother’s half-sister, Mingai. This is the first time I’ve seen you.” Sun Mingai forced herself to greet Lu Xinyi in a friendly manner.
“I know,” Lu Xinyi replied as she slumped lazily at the other couch across Sun Mingai. She crossed her legs and checked the decors of the room, refusing to meet everyone’s eyes.
As soon as she settled in her seat, she heard Sun Qiyan’s voice.
“Mom! What are you doing here? Didn’t I say you should go rest?” she said worriedly.
Lu Xinyi turned her head to see what it was about and saw Sun Ruying removing Qiyan’s hand on her arm. Sun Ruying was staring back at her with unconcealed hatred in her eyes.
“I’m here because I heard Meixiu’s daughter arrived,” she hissed.
Lu Xinyi chuckled and fought hard not to roll her eyes. It seemed that this aunt of her still blamed her for losing her businesses after the Shen’s gala.
“Oh, Aunt Ruying, do you feel much better now? I heard you lost some screws in your head after your company went bankrupt overnight?” She taunted.
“You! You…” Sun Ruying pointed a shaky finger at Lu Xinyi and almost puked blood at her words. After their meeting at the gala of the Shen family, she indeed lost most of her wealth overnight. It was all because of this woman why she was suffering right now.
“Lu Xinyi! You are now in the Sun Estate! Watch your words!” Sun Qiyan snapped at her, “Is this how your mother raised you?”
“Ah, my poor mother. She must have really regretted being born in this family of yours. She came here to ask for help when my father encountered an accident. Who would’ve thought that her own sister will chase her away like a dog, forcing her to her own death?” Lu Xinyi sighed dejectedly.
Both Sun Mingai and Sun Ruying paled on Lu Xinyi’s words. Horror was written on their faces. They dared to glance on their father’s way, hoping that he wouldn’t get fl.u.s.tered on what Lu Xinyi said.
How did she find out what happened that night?
