answer another, say like when Michael prayed for Steven
Harris to be healed of cancer?"
"Why don"t you ask Michael about that?" suggested
Audrey.
"Good idea. In fact, I"m interviewing him in the morning.
I"ll put it on my question list."
"And here"s another question," said Spencer with a gleam
in his eye. "Why don"t you ask him if he can pray for my foot
to be completely healed before the slopes open up?"
The two women chuckled over this, and then Maggie
grew more serious. "Already there are some strange rumors
going on around town about Michael. Some people are
making fun of him. I just hope they don"t get carried away
with all this miracle business. Poor Michael, I"d hate for
folks to start treating him like some sort of sideshow freak
or something."
I"I"d be more worried about those people who might hate
him because of the color of his skin," said Audrey. "Just
today, Clara Henderson told me that Lou had heard that
Lthat Ebbert fellow is up to no good. He wanted to post a
flyer at their store about some meeting or something. Of
course, Lou refused."
"Yeah, and there are a few kids at my school who"re
*pretty weird when it comes to all that kind of crud," said
Spencer. "I can"t believe them. They draw swastikas on their
hands and walk around with their heads all shaved, wearing
these stupid-looking army fatigues. You halfway expect
* *them to click their heels and salute "Heil Hitler" at any given
moment."
*"They"re probably just going through a phase," sug-
*gested Maggie weakly.
"A dangerous phase," said Audrey.
aggie grabbed her jacket and went Out on the

pulling into her driveway. The snow had stopped
falling now, and she was amazed at how easily she could see
the porch light reflected on the shiny surface of new

Jed stuck his head up over the top of the cab and called out,
"Hey, Maggie. This enough snow for you yet?"
"It"s totally wonderful!" she called. "I love it! I just
wanted to say thank you for getting those snow tires on, and
just in the nick of time too!"
"No problem. I was taking Michael over to Byron
anyway."
"Come on in and I"ll write you a check for them. And we
