The two siblings head inside, neither want to face their sister. She and Salali are inside cooking breakfast waiting for everyone to arrive. Astila looks at the two of them noticing their dark circles and sad faces. He knows Moll places a spell in the RV. One that would let them see what they could not before. He part of him wonders exactly what they saw. While the other part doesn"t want to know. He doesn"t want to know what his tiny wife lived through. What surprises him is that Sam looks red in the face like he trying to control his emotions. Astila greets them and asks Sam to follow him he wants to show him something. Once outside they take a walk . Astila takes him on the path just past the house. They are silent while Sam is trying to control what is boiling inside him at the moment. When they reach an area where a bench is sitting in front of a tree. They can see the whole mountain side Sam just stares at the calming beauty.
"So have you calmed down some now?" Astila smiles at him waiting for him to talk.
"I can"t believe that those two allowed Aisling to go through surgery alone. I know they alway took her for granted. I just didn"t think they were that cruel. You know that Aisling was barely fourteen when her Dad died. Did you know she gave him a part of her liver and those two didn"t even stay with her. I asked Debra to marry me and we went to visit my grandma. The same weekend that she had surgery. My wife didn"t even remember that she had surgery or for what till last night. Dude went away with friends thinking Debra was going to be with her. In his defense he was only what ten so ok I can forgive him . My wife was the eldest she should have known. " by this time Sam "s voice is cracking with emotions you can see he is about to cry. Astila puts his hand on his shoulder the two of them are both trying to get control over what they are feeling. Sam anger and disappointment at his wife Astila is feeling just plain sadness for his wife.
"You know what a lot of the fault is on their fathers shoulders. I have no idea what all happened when they were growing up. I know that Aisling carried most of the burden. I have seen the scars on her body ,so I know that she has had a lot happen. Steve told me about the transplant because when she came to visit him. He wanted me to watch her to make sure she was healing properly. You know how that went. She tried to move a nest of poisonous snakes. Then disappeared on me. It"s going to take time for them to come to terms with this. We have to let the three of them work it out. " Sam nods and they hear a branch crack behind them. It"s Inola and the two uncles.
"I knew we would find you here. I saw the others they look worn out." Astila and Sam get up so the three elders can sit.
"So Sam what has you in such a distraught state?" John looks up at the big man
"I just never realized how selfish my wife really was. " he admits sadly.
"We all are selfish and when it comes to facing it ourself it"s hard. I heard that you were angry cause of Aisling giving a piece of her liver. That entire situation is totally on my brothers-in-law. He never asked anyone to get tested . That man has more siblings than a basketball team . He never asked he already knew Aisling was a match from the countless times she had been in the hospital. Mostly by his hand I might add. He signed the papers for her to be his donor since she was just thirteen when the process began. She wasn"t given a choice. It"s not surprising that the other two didn"t know. We didn"t even know till it was to late to stop it. When she came to Texas, I told everyone in my unit to watch out for her and why. She was still not getting better even though it had been months. I was terrified she would get hurt. Astila has just gotten back from some special training. I a.s.signed him to keep watch on her at the picnic. He did what I asked and saved her from the snakes. I wasn"t expecting her to get angry and hide away the rest of her trip. "John looks at him with a disgruntled face .
"Hey Astila was the youngest only nineteen. It"s not like I asked him to date her at that time. I just asked him to keep watch over her. He was already in medical training and a very responsible young man. I knew I could trust him." John agreed with him on that point he thought Astila was older than that. John decides to put his two cents in to help ease the tensions.
"We all did what we could at the time . Those two were children , they only saw what they wanted too so they could cope with losing their mom. Then losing their father. When Norma moved in with them after his death things changed. She watched over Aisling. She took care of the home and Aisling worked because it"s all she knew. She worked for five years taking care of the lady from the diner and babysitting. When she was just a little over eighteen she sold a few things she found in one of the closets. I helped her find a broker so they wouldn"t ask about age. When they were sold at auction in New York they came to over five million. She had all of the debts paid off , the rest was divided between everyone telling them it was an inheritance. So they wouldn"t know where it came from. She never expected them to try to hurt her over it."
John looks at Sam hoping his anger towards Debra has calmed some. Sam looks at them now he is ready to tell them what he thinks.
"I think we should head back because what I have to say my wife needs to hear." With that he turns and heads back towards the house. Inola looks at his nephew wondering what he is thinking.
"What"s going on in that head of yours?" Astila looks at his uncle.
"I"m just thinking about how strong my wife must truly be. Just by the few things I know she has to be the strongest woman I have ever met. I hope I can give her an easy life from now on." Inola smiles broadly at him. He already saw her strength first hand . His nephew is a very lucky man.
When they get back to the house Sam calls everyone to the great room.
"I have a few things to say. Aisling on behalf of myself and my wife I am truly sorry that you had to suffer alone on the weekend you had surgery for your dad"s transplant. If I had known I would have camped out at the hospital with you. You always have been so kind and giving to me. For that I thank you . For you two you should be forever sorry to your sister . I am so ashamed that I never noticed just how selfish you were. I hope you both work hard to become better people to become worthy of Aisling"s sacrifices and care . Debra do you not even realize that you are a wonderful mother not because of your mom or your dad . It"s because of the care Aisling gave you. The very things she did for you , you do for our children and home. From how you cook and clean to how you ensure that everything is in its place. Those are things Aisling did everyday without recognition. Dude the only reason you don"t have a steady girl is because when asked what kind of girl you want. Do you even realize you describe your sister Aisling. You both have a lot to make up for and I am going to make sure you do it. Debra you are supposed to stand for Aisling in the ceremony next week. From now till then I expect you to think about what she truly means and what she has done for us. So when you stand beside her you can do so proudly not just because your expecting something. Do you know exactly how many scars she bares on her body because of you two. Maybe you should ask her to show you. I know of two for Debra because my mom patched her up. Think about it you have a week. If you can"t sincerely show her your sorry and are ready to mend your ways then Yona I will be asking you to help me find a good divorce attorney. I can"t live with someone no matter how much I love them . Who can"t be honest with themselves and change for the better." With that he walks out of the room into the kitchen to get breakfast. Aisling looks at her siblings wondering what happened between leaving the house yesterday and breakfast this morning. What did she miss?
