Chapter 1298: City in Danger
Arthur’s Stone Inscription (Quest Item)
Item introduction: The stone slab of the old blacksmith in Twilight City, Arthur. There seems to be some secret recorded on it.
Usage requirement: None.
Looking at the stone slab’s attributes, w.a.n.g Yu gave a faint smile and casually kept it.
It was a quest item to trigger a quest.
Triggered quests were a huge unique characteristic of <>. After all, levelling up was too boring so to not bore players, the designers added many interesting triggered quests in the monsters.
The difficulty of these quests differed and the rewards were generous, including XP, equipment and more, making killing monsters way more interesting. Usually, these quests were referred to by the players as an ‘unknown adventure’.
Compared to the rest in Quan Zhen Sect, w.a.n.g Yu was diligent at killing monsters so he had encountered countless unknown adventures. However, perhaps w.a.n.g Yu did not have good luck, the rewards of the quests he had were mainly XP.
So when he saw the stone slab, w.a.n.g Yu was not too excited over it and just continued killing monsters…
However, in a while, w.a.n.g Yu suddenly received a system notification: Count Wylie is looking for you.
“Count Wylie?”
Seeing this system notification, w.a.n.g Yu did not realise what was going on. He hesitated for a while then recalled that this was the name of the previous Twilight City Lord.
w.a.n.g Yu was not a management talent. He could fight but when it came to a main city or even a small guild, he would not be able to manage it well. Hence, after w.a.n.g Yu became the City Lord, he kept Wylie in the City Lord residence as the acting City Lord.
This was a special function the system had to make it easier for players to manage the main city.
Seeing that the acting City Lord was looking for him, w.a.n.g Yu stopped killing the monsters and leapt aside.
Usually, there was nothing big happening and Wylie could resolve the small ones himself. This time, Wylie was looking for him so it had to be something big that Wylie could not resolve so it could a quest or something.
Levelling up could be done later but a hidden quest was an opportunity that could not be missed.
At this thought, w.a.n.g Yu chose to return to the city.
Upon reaching the City Lord’s residence, Wylie was in the conference room looking bored. Seeing that w.a.n.g Yu was back, he instantly changed his facial expressions to look worried.
See, this is how impressive an NPC can change its face so quickly.
“Count Wylie, may I know why you are looking for me?”
w.a.n.g Yu asked nicely because he knew that being summoned for no reason by an NPC was highly likely because there was a quest for him.
As the real City Lord, he was ordered around by the acting City Lord so w.a.n.g Yu did not have much dignity. He had no choice as Wylie was an NPC and had limited range to stay within so w.a.n.g Yu had to swallow his pride.
After all, in the game, it was better to be on good terms with the NPC.
“City Lord” Wylie replied respectfully, “I recently realised that the city wall of Twilight City’s west area is damaged. Should we repair it?”
“Damaged city wall?” w.a.n.g Yu asked puzzledly, “Is it too old to be repaired?”
Twilight City was an ancient city so it was normal for the city walls to be damaged.
“Maybe!” Wylie kept some suspense and said, “It might be better if you could take the trouble to take a look for yourself!”
At the same time, w.a.n.g Yu received a system notification: You have triggered a hidden quest ‘Wall in Danger’! Quest level: none. Accept?
A Main City quest was the exclusive quest for main city’s city lords and the top leaders of a management area. Such quests’ rewards were mainly main city’s merit or reputation points. Usually, players could not reject it, as, if they do, their reputation amongst the main city’s civilians would drop.
When their reputation drops to a certain level, it could trigger an NPC civilian rebellion…
Even if w.a.n.g Yu was not a City Lord with such heavy responsibilities, even if it was just a piece of cloth as the reward, it would not make sense to give up an already triggered quest.
“Accept!”
w.a.n.g Yu immediately accepted the quest.
Quest requirement: Take a look at the damaged wall at the west of the city and investigate the truth.
Quest notification: This is a special quest. Giving up or rejecting the quest will result in zero City Lord reputation.>
Indeed, the system was as cruel as usual.
No one ever said this was a compulsory quest but if you give it up or reject it, the consequences are not something you can bear.
…
Upon leaving the City Lord’s residence, w.a.n.g Yu jogged toward the westside of the city.
The west side of the city was managed by Void Blade. The area’s infrastructure is tightly linked to players’ painstaking contributions. Although Void Blade was way smaller than Sanguine Alliance, they were rich.
Based on Soaring Dragon Game Studios’, so long as you could pay, you could be better and faster than everyone else at anything.
With the large sums of money invested by Void Blade, it was the fastest developing and most luxurious area of Twilight City. Their guild leader, Captain Don’t Open Fire, had a reputation level close to w.a.n.g Yu.
Based on the coordinates given by the system, w.a.n.g Yu quickly reached the damaged wall Wylie mentioned.
Twilight City’s city walls were tall and as firm as diamond but for some unknown cause, this segment of the wall was cracked in between the tiles and looked as though it was swaying in the wind.
“Swis.h.!.+”
w.a.n.g Yu was about to take a closer look and suddenly, an arrow flew from a dark spot.
w.a.n.g Yu turned his body slightly and the arrow missed him. Just then, a bunch of players jumped out of a shady spot near the damaged wall.
At the same time, a big-built player, their leader, excited yelled, “Don’t think of escaping. I have waited an entire day. Finally, I… Mmm?”
Just as he was excited, the moment he saw w.a.n.g Yu, he instantly froze, “Bulls… No, Iron… City Lord?”
“Oh?” w.a.n.g Yu turned to look around at the big-built player then smiled, “Big Bear, it’s you.”
w.a.n.g Yu was not unfamiliar with this big-built player. He was the second-in-charge of Void Blade, Big Bear Deng Deng An.
w.a.n.g Yu did not remember people’s names so even with a lot of experts, if their names were not special, he would forget about them. He remembered this lad, not because of his unique ID but because he wanted to exterminate Quan Zhen Sect in front of w.a.n.g Yu. Such an arrogant yet ignorant lad left a deep impression on w.a.n.g Yu.
“Yes… It’s me.”
Big Bear Deng Deng An had the protection of thousands of people back then but was still stepped on to death by w.a.n.g Yu. This trauma stayed until today.
He was hiding here to wait for the culprit who damaged the city wall. Now that he saw w.a.n.g Yu, he was not just disappointed. He was so nervous he even got a stutter.
d.a.m.n it, if he was the one who damaged the wall, their mission would have to end there.
However, he was the second-in-charge of the guild. With so many subordinates there, he would not just back down so Big Bear Deng Deng An mustered some courage and asked, “City Lord, what are you doing out here?”
