Nora Kranz regretted it.
As a Baron"s daughter, Nora seldom attended evening parties. She doesn"t have a lot of friends in the n.o.bility nor does she actively socialize, so she only receives a small number of invitations.
There"s also the fact that because she came from a poor Baron"s family, she doesn"t have the luxury to have brand new dresses easily.
However, the primary reason is actually because she finds it bothersome.
She has to be mindful of what she wears, what she says, and whom she can dance with or not. Every aspect is just bothersome.
Instead of spending her time on those troublesome matters, she"d rather mend her clothes or work part-time. It"s often said that poor people don"t have time to be idle and Nora is no exception. She also happens to be quite busy herself.
That day was the first time in a long time she attended an evening party at the invitation of a few friends. She didn"t remember who hosted the party but it must be a celebration for a successful venture considering the majestic scale of the a.s.sembly. That is to say, a mult.i.tude of people were in attendance.
Amidst the crowd, a handsome gentleman with grayish brown hair and lemon-colored eyes stood in front of her. Alongside a beautiful blonde lady, he called out to Nora.
"Nora Kranz, I can"t marry you. I"m breaking our engagement!"
Silence instantly fell over the bustling evening party. Majority of the guests have now focused their undivided attention to them.
Amidst the murmurs of the crowd speculating whether it was a case of a stolen love affair or a love triangle, Nora opened her mouth.
"Who might you be?"
At those words, the grayish brown-haired gentleman positioned to move the beautiful lady behind him in a protective gesture. "I won"t allow her to get hurt."
From an outsider"s point of view, it was a splendid scene of a knight protecting his beloved princess.
However, in reality, it wasn"t as beautiful as it seemed because the lady behind was clearly looking at her with a condescending smile. Musing that the la.s.s" character must be terrible, Nora tilted her head in contemplation.
"No, I was actually referring to you." When Nora directed her gaze at the gentleman, he raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"What an impudent att.i.tude in front of your fiance."
It seemed like he didn"t realize that he was the pot calling the kettle black because telling her to break their engagement in front of the crowd was clearly impudent of him to do.
Since they weren"t going to see eye to eye, Nora decided to cut to the chase.
"Breaking the engagement is absolutely fine, but there"s one thing I"d like to clarify."
"What now? Do you have lingering attachments to the House of the Marquis? It"s too late for that now. The doc.u.ments for the cancellation of the engagement have already been submitted."
It seemed like the gentleman is part of the House of the Marquis. Nora wondered if that was the reason why he kept his gaze high no matter where he looked.
Towards the haughty young n.o.bleman, Nora leaned closer.
"But I don"t remember getting engaged in the first place… Who are you?"
Silence enveloped the evening party once again. From a distance, the sound of something metallic could be heard, as if a spoon had dropped.
Just as everyone was baffled by the turn of events, another gentleman walked towards Nora. He looked like the spitting image of the young n.o.bleman who wanted to break their engagement.
The gentleman kneeled before Nora and raised his face. He had the same grayish brown hair and facial features but his eyes were as bright as the sky.
"Lady Nora Kranz, will you accept my engagement proposal?" Professing so, the gentleman with sky-colored eyes extended his hands to Nora.
Sounds of awe and shrieks of surprise echoed all over. Nora blinked continuously for a moment, then heaved a heavy sigh.
"I will have to refuse."
She shouldn"t have come to the evening party after all.
Nora Kranz regretted it.
