Xu Weilai had continued to rent her apartment abroad because, at the time when she returned to China, she never expected herself to stay on for long. But subsequently, she married Gu Yu and remained in the country for over half a year.
However, probably because lacked a sense of security, she still continued to rent the apartment even after her marriage and it was a blessing in disguise, for it would spare her the trouble of finding a new apartment when she returned abroad.
Before she left, she had asked her landlady to help her clean up the house regularly and water her potted plants. Xu Weilai’s landlady was also Chinese and was a friendly old lady who had always been nice to her. Thus, her landlady readily agreed.
After getting off the plane, Xu Weilai lugged her luggage and took a taxi back to her tiny apartment.
The apartment was small but cozy and even though it was a rented place, Xu Weilai tried her best to make it feel like home. After all, she was living in a foreign country alone and had to learn to make herself feel at home.
The sense of belonging that she felt towards her rented apartment was something that neither the Xu Residence, Gu Yu’s apartment or her boss’s apartment couldn’t provide her.
As the old lady knew that she would be back today, she deliberately waited for her at the door. When she saw Xu Weilai, she received her with a warm smile on her face and reached out to hug her before she said, “Welcome back, la.s.s.”
She would always address Xu Weilai like this with affection and whenever Xu Weilai heard this, she would always feel a warm sensation in her heart. She hugged the old lady’s chubby body and greeted gently, “It’s been a while. I missed you so much.”
After some small talk, they parted separated and the old lady helped her push one of the boxes. As they made their way towards the apartment block, the old lady asked casually, “Did you return because of work?”
Xu Weilai shook her head gently and replied, “It’s not because of work. I’m going to live here for a long time.”
If there were no other unforeseen circ.u.mstances, Xu Weilai considered residing here permanently.
Feeling puzzled, the old lady asked, “What about your husband? Did he come with you?”
Previously during the Chinese New Year, the old lady had asked Xu Weilai when she would be back when she sent her new year greetings. At that point in time, she casually mentioned that she had married someone and would not be coming back for the time being. This was why the old lady would bring this up now.
“No, I’m… I’m divorced,” Xu Weilai replied softly. However, she appeared calm as if she was talking about something insignificant.
The old lady never expected such an answer and, after being stunned for a moment, replied awkwardly, “Sorry to hear that.”
Xu Weilai smiled and shook her head.
After the old lady sent Xu Weilai back to her apartment, hugged her again and comforted, “Miss, the future (Weilai) is bright. Always look forward to it.”
“The future (Weilai) is beautiful,” Xu Weilai thought.
The pun instantly warmed up her heart.
Back then her grandfather had named her Weilai and her brother Zhanw.a.n.g out of hopes that they would always have a bright future that they could always look forward to.
“Thank you,” Xu Weilai replied sincerely.
“If you need anything, give me a call. I’ll make a move first.”
After Xu Weilai sent the old lady off, she opened the door and pushed her luggage into the apartment before she entered the house and took in the familiar sight before her. The sense of gloominess in her heart gradually faded off and the sunlight slowly warmed up her heart.
Despite her ten-hour long plane ride earlier on, she was not the least tired. Her apartment was a little stuffy after being vacant for a long time and Xu Weilai quickly opened the windows to let the fresh air in before she put on her ap.r.o.n and gloves and began to clean up the house.
*The Chinese word for ‘future’ is p.r.o.nounced the same way as Xu Weilai’s name.
