Miya rolled on the floor furiously, her body curled into a ball. She was a moron! She was the stupidest person on the planet! Had there been an award by the name of "Idiot of the Year", she would have won the first three places singlehandedly. She was so irritated by her own behaviour, she was sure she didn"t deserve to live.
What had she been thinking?!
Getting up and kissing the C.E.O. of Hunter Corporation?!
She should be thrown off the highest tower in the country!
Almost on the verge of tears, Miya hugged her knees while still lying on the floor. Her heart was still beating in her mouth, and when she recalled how she had thought, "He is beautiful", and kissed the young master, her eyes welled up.
No! Someone tell her she hadn"t done it!
Almost crying, she remembered that after she had mentioned Kasu, the atmosphere between them had suddenly turned strange. Mr. Hunter had just looked at her with something inexplicable in his eyes, and then they had slowly walked back to the mansion Jade. They had stayed silent all the way back, and the young master had looked grim.
The silence hadn"t exactly been uncomfortable, but it was slightly unsettling.
When Miya walked back into her room, she was surprised to see Mr. Park seated on a chair beside the bed, fast asleep. He was half lurking on the chair, and half his body lay sideward on the bed, beside Ben. The old man, though sleeping, was holding Ben"s little hand.
Her boy had his little palm clutched around the old man"s thumb too.
The scene immediately made her feel guilty.
Mr. Park was old, and yet she had been selfish enough to let Jim order him to watch over Ben, while she had gone for a bike ride. She had driven for four hours too, and it was now almost three in the morning.
Miya had been unable to forgive herself. The old butler was so nice to her, always looking after Ben, while she had never got past the stage of being a delinquent mother.
The head of the civil society group had been correct, somewhat. She was a bad parent.
Sighing, she had decided to not lie down on the bed. For it seemed terribly rude, when the old man was sleeping so uneasily on a chair. It was almost disrespectful. She also didn"t want to wake him up, for although his position was awkward, Mr. Park"s face looked content, peaceful.
So Miya did what she did best – she came up with an alternative. This case, being simple. She simply spread a blanket on the floor and took another one to cover herself up. Then lying down, she decided to hate herself for all the things she had done wrong that day.
Agreeing to Mr. Simon Hunter"s stupid proposal, kissing his son Jimmy Hunter, allowing the nice old Mr. Park to disrupt his sleep for her… the list went on.
She rolled over the floor, cursing herself mentally, a thousand times again and again.
Meanwhile Jim"s heart was a simmer of completely different emotions. At the same time, he also felt rather cold.
Mr. Park had been right all along.
He was a naïve, imprudent fool.
What was he even thinking, letting himself so close to someone like Miya? How dare he disregard his own position, and think he could crush on a girl so below his league? No, it wasn"t simply a crush. It was want.
And he didn"t know how to deal with it.
He didn"t want to go over the "why" question again, even though it occupied a large part of his brain. The night had been magnanimous, magical even, and he had been lost. Until Miya had uttered one name. Kasu.
Ben"s father.
That had hit Jimmy in the gut, almost knocking him off his senses.
How had he forgotten, that with this girl came a kid? And with that, inevitably came a history of her and the man who was the father? For even a second, if he let his pounding heart have its way, and forget that she probably had a criminal background, that she belonged to a cla.s.s that his peers won"t even look at… If he ignored all that, there would still be a major question.
Did she like someone else?
He didn"t know why that Kasu guy and Miya weren"t together, but what if she was still hung up on him? Would he ever be able to stand losing to someone just like that?
He still wasn"t sure what his feelings for Miya were, but they were strong. It was mad, really, foolish of course, because he had known her for only three days. But he couldn"t help it. It was what it was.
Whatever he felt, was intense enough to make him ignore her background. He was one of the most powerful men in the entire country. If he announced publicly that Miya was his wife, n.o.body would dare say a word against it. But what bothered him was that she probably would never see him that way.
There was a Kasu in the middle after all.
And as much as he tried to ignore the woman, what he felt was powerful enough to make him envy just the presence of one irrelevant guy.
Jimmy took out his eighth cigarette and put it to his lips.
The room was a blister of smoke as the young master sat on a chair, his legs spread out on the desk in front. His eyes were cold, his gaze cutting as he stared at the wall in front of him. Amongst all this, there was still the matter of the Hunter Corporation.
His old man had still not signed it away. He would have to do something about that too. Also, for the past month, a lot of work had taken a backlog because of his hunt for a bride. He needed to concentrate more on business. If he slacked now, it would only give his father an excuse to declare him incompetent.
Well, that he could try. Jim wasn"t afraid. Because if Simon Hunter dared to do that, the old man wouldn"t even know what hit him when Jim took off the Chairmanship forcefully from his hands.
Also, more work would keep him distracted from the wife.
Because even if he did like Miya, there was the fact that they were contracted for only a year. He would still have to let her go after the stipulated time. Not to mention, if against all odds, she did agree to stay longer, Jim wasn"t sure he was ready to play father to her child.
So, he decided on finish off all the pent up work which he needed to finish off anyway, had the situation been normal and he was not attracted to his wife.
He put off the cigarette and threw the stub into the ash tray, feeling incredibly heavy, and yet satisfied. He had a plan of action after all. Ignorance was bliss, and so he was going to leave for country S the first thing next morning. He had been postponing a meeting with the head of S/R Designs for quite some time anyway.
Unb.u.t.toning his shirt, Jim slowly took off his shoes, when suddenly, he heard a familiar sound of footsteps outside his door. He hadn"t locked it, so before the person could knock, he called out listlessly, "Come in."
The old butler smiled as he entered through the door.
Jim greeted him with a smirk himself.
"Turning into a night owl, are you?" he teased tiredly, looking at the clock that showed the time as 3:00 a.m. Mr. Park didn"t reply. He had expected Jimmy to be awake, but he hadn"t predicted him to be smoking like a chimney.
Something was wrong.
He walked to the young master"s desk, taking a small glance at the folder he was carrying. He hesitated, wondering if he really should tell Jimmy about all of this now.
But then, the sooner he knew, the better.
He was mad about the girl after all.
Mr. Park sighed. Here it came.
