My Way To You

Chapter 74

"That thing will swallow us whole!" Vera shouted. "I know so relax your hands so I can save you already!" Ariana shouted. "It"s too late!" Vera screamed as tears flowed from her eyes. The gigantic snake"s head was coming closer as the milliseconds pa.s.sed by. Ariana looked up and releasing Vera"s jaw.

It happened so fast, she could see the tongue shaft located in the giant snake"s mouth, it was just a foot away from her face. it"s fangs were out venom was already dripping down as it"s forked tongue retracted only a bit. They were going to get eaten, this was the end, a battle finished in a draw, there was nothing she could do but wait for it all to be over. Ariana refused to avert her gaze, she tightened her legs around Vera"s body and gripped her shoulders, if she was going down so was Vera but she was ready to use Vera"s claws to cut her way out if she had too. Suddenly the scene change, Ariana felt a rush of air run down her entire body as everything blurred infront of her. She no longer saw the pink, fleshy colour of the snakes mouth but blue, open sky. Something had sent them flying upwards but why?

Her sense of time slowled to a fraction of a breath. She looked around with her eyes as her heart roared within her body. She saw a pink stag keeping the snake"s mouth open by shoving his antlers in between its jaws. "VASU!" She screamed as her and Vera started to fall back towards the ground. "Stay alive." He said as he held back one of the giant snake"s head while the other started to position itself to strike. "Nooooooo!" She cried as she plunged into the gorge with Vera.

They sank into the dark, raging waters. Ariana wrapped her arms around Vera"s chest and held on to her for dear life while Vera started to claw at Ariana"s arms and legs. Blood spread out in large clouds around the surrounding water as Ariana screamed in pain, air bubbles carried her voice only a short distance above. They started sinking further into the water and Vera gave up her a.s.sualt and started to swim instead. She was able to break through the surface of the water, to only find that the water above was just as relentless as it was below. They both gasped for air as Vera tried to keep them a float, the sudden plunge into the water didn"t give her enough time to collect air into her lungs so drowning was a huge possibility. She needed air, lots of air if she planned to drown Ariana instead.

The water was moving too fast and with the extra weight on her back, she struggled to keep her own head above water. An idea hit her when she saw the rock formation up ahead, she moved her tail left then right, trying to find a way to maneuver with a handicapped body. When she got the hang of how to spin her body in command, she quickly calculated their distance and adjust her tail.

She made themselves spin as they closely approached each formation allowing Ariana to be the only one who got hurt when they collided into the rocks. Ariana would gasp every time her body slammed into each rock, her body stung as pieces of the jagged rock sliced into her skin. She could feel her arms and legs starting to go numb but she refused to let go instead she tightened her grip and let out a cry every few feet.

"At this rate... cough, cough... we will both... cough... drown! Let go... cough, cough, cough... already!" Vera yelled as she took a chance and dug her one clawed hand into Ariana"s arm. Ariana screamed in blood curdling agony. She gritted her teeth and refused to budge. "Don"t be... cough... stubborn... cough... give up!" Vera shouted as she inhaled water every time she opened her mouth. The rapids were relentless and unbiased to whom ever it swallowed, the raging waters dragged them down into its dark depths.

Ariana held her breath while Vera released Ariana"s arm. Vera began to swim upwards with great difficulty as Ariana"s blood dispersed throughout the water. The smell and taste of her blood was both exciting and horrifying in that moment. They were at the mercy of the rapids and nothing was going to save them.

Ariana pushed herself upwards and coughed violently. Cold, droplets of water fell from her fringe as she brought her pale face upwards. Her vision was blurred, she felt weak and cold. Her heart was slowly thumping in between her ears as she took shallow breaths. She felt the sun blazing above her head and the warm earth under her finger tips. She thanked the heavens that Vera was able to pull them out if the rapids.

She tried to find something to focus her vision on and saw a dark blob. She steadied her ahead, hoping that it would finally focus her sight. The blob started to become clearer, the light was fading into the background and she saw Vera slowly raising her body, one joint at a time, as if she was some sort of corpse being brought back from the dead.

Ariana smiled to herself as she tried to stand but failed miserably, buckling under her own wait. "You"re insane… give up." Vera said as she watched Ariana continuously struggle to stand up. Blood freely flowed from her open wounds, down her arms and legs, dripping into the small pool of blood and water around her feet. "Why should I give up?" Ariana asked with a hoa.r.s.e voice. "W-w-why?! You"re… familiar is dead, you"re done!"

Ariana could feel a fire lite in her belly. She refused to let anyone tell her what to do. She lived a life of solitude, remorse and regret. She didn"t believe in anyone or thing, especially herself but after living so long in this world. The memories she had with her friends, family and beloved Lumas she found the inner strength to raise her head and stand up straight. She looked at Vera with a fire blazing in her eyes. "Shut up! Vasu is strong! He"s fine! I"m fine and I will win this battle!"

Vera looked surprised, her eyes were wide, her face was slightly pale but colour soon rushed to her cheeks and she started to laugh. "Whatever, be delusional… all the creature that reside in this terrain are special. So special that they have the ability to consume our familiars and become stronger." Ariana"s eyes grew wide, more colour drained from her face as her heart hammered against her chest. Vera"s words shook her world and she was on the verge of collapsing. "You"re lying... your familiar is fine." Ariana said pitifully but Vera just grinned her toothy smile.

"No. I can a.s.sure you that I am telling the truth. I can protect my familiar because she has infused with me. Those creatures can"t detect my Arizona! As long as we work together we will keep eachother same. Unlike you and your familiar!" Vera said proudly. Ariana swallowed back her fear and glared at Vera. She steeled her nerves, she would not stop believing in Vasu! "I"ll say it again because your too stupid to understand. Vasu will never fall! Vasu is strong and I believe he would have found a way to escape! He is smart and will find a way to come back to me but before he does I will kick your a**!" Ariana shouted with conviction as she raised her fists, widened her stance and focused on the target before her.

"Ha hahahaha ha! Big words for someone who is half dead! Honestly how naive can one person be! Fine, don"t admit defeat, all I have to do is strike you one more time and your done." She said as she brought up her own hands, snapping them open to show off her claws. "Bring it on already!" Ariana shouted.

Vera lunged forward, Ariana kept her eyes glued on Vera"s movement carefully watching as every muscle constricted as she approached her, she grabbed the arm that reached out to her, she shifted her footing sliding it in between Vera"s legs, bringing her back to Vera"s chest and threw Vera over her shoulder. Vera was sent flying and plunged back into the raging waters.

Ariana waited, keeping her guard up as she watched the surface of the rapids. Vera broke through the surface, gasping for air. Her eyes became murderous as she brought her whole body upwards and swam back to sh.o.r.e as if she was a real crocodile. She latched onto the surface of the earth with her claws and looked up at Ariana. While Ariana had already walked towards her. She squatted down and looked her in the eyes.

"Fun fact crocodiles are reptiles which means they"re cold blooded so they can"t produce their own body heat.... but I guess you knew your own disadvantage and decided to stall until your body warmed up enough under the sun. Clever but not that original... but I did wonder, if you got too cold would you start to slow down and would you slip into hibernation? Food for thought, well at least until the next person challenges you... Hey I got a question that has been bugging me like you wouldn"t believe! Do you know your own weak spots?" She asked as she smiled sweetly. Before Vera could react Ariana jabbed both her eyes.

Vera screamed as she covered her eyes with her free hand. "See I do but at the same time I also knew about your own body temperature. Since we both plunged together I couldn"t be the only one to drown... so as a safety precaution I kept you warm when you were in the rapids, my body heat was your blanket. You couldn"t have swam so far without my help and I really must thank you for saving my life." She said as she raised her foot.

"However did you think I didn"t notice when you missed your first attack? It was because you couldn"t focus. How long did you wait for me in the water? Crocodiles can hold their breath for two hours before they started to drown. My guess is, you were sun bathing close to the waters, waiting until I got close enough to the gorge then hid yourself. This is a battle and there will always be a winner and a loser. I can not afford to be the loser, I must be the one who watches out for my fellow cla.s.smates! I can"t leave them to the wolves!" She shouted as she stomped on Vera"s wrist repeatedly.

Vera gritted her teeth and continued to shield her eyes. "Don"t take it personally... I really am determined to win. Now let"s see you battle with a huge handicap just like me!" She yelled as she booted Vera right back into the rapids. Vera could feel the effects of the cold water on her body, she should have finished Ariana off the moment she had the chance but now she had been in the water too long. Her reaction time was already at half speed and slowing down rapidly as the minutes went by. She swam forward hoping that she would reach land, taking shallow breaths with every movement.

She looked around but her vision was practically destroyed. All she could make out where black blobs and light. "Come... out... you... coward!" Vera shouted but all she could hear was the water rapidly moving by. "You"re mad? That"s a shame." She heard Ariana laugh. Vera dragged her body out of the water and laid belly flat on the earth as she absorbed the sunlight.

"I warned you didn"t I?" Ariana whispered into Vera"s ear. Vera shot open her eyes, she swung one arm into the air but Ariana dodged it easily. "Where are you?! Show yourself!" Vera shouted. Ariana brushed Vera"s bangs back and laughed. "I haven"t left." Ariana said gently. Vera clenched her jaw closed and tried to lift her body up. Her arms and legs were shaking. Ariana poked her cheek and laughed as she watched her struggle. "You could always separate with you familiar and fight me without the huge handicap." Vera hissed at Ariana"s suggestion and tried to get up.

"Fine, I will make this quick." Ariana sighed and stood up. She started to feel dizzy and raised her hand to her forehead to try and steady her head. She started to see double, all her tough words were only for show and she had hoped to have scared Vera enough to forfeit but now she had to act before she lost her consciousness. She finally focused her vision raised her leg and brought her foot down on an angle to Vera"s elbow.

Vera screamed as she fell back to the ground. Her hatred for Ariana only grew as she tried to raise her arm, something was wrong, she moved her clawed fingers to feel her arm and found a gap between her arm and elbow. It was a clean break. Ariana took a few steps to the side and raised her leg again. Vera heard the movement and sensed what she wanted to do. She quickly moved her tail underneath herself and propelled herself forward. Ariana"s attack missed, she looked over to Vera"s new location and watched, waiting to see what she would do next.

All she heard was Vera clicking her tongue before a flash of marigold light appeared. Ariana shielded her eyes. When she moved her hand away Vera"s fist was already an inch away from her face. She quickly diverted her fist but the momentum of Vera"s body was not stopped. Her whole body collided into Ariana"s causing her to fall backwards. Vera scrambled to try and position herself on top of Ariana but Ariana acted quickly she swung her legs up and wrapped them around Vera"s neck, pulling her off.

Vera was head locked in between Ariana legs, she brought her hands up to pry the legs off, her eyes were darting everywhere until she saw Ariana"s wounds. She brought her hands to the open wounds and dug her thumbs into them. Ariana screamed and released Vera. They both scrambled up, Vera was red from anger while Ariana had gone pale and started to breath erratically. Vera brought her hands up and lunged for Ariana again. Ariana caught her wrists, mid air and brought her knee up. She struck Vera in her abdomen causing her to spit up saliva. When she felt Vera go limp, Ariana brought her whole body forwards, throwing Vera only a few feet in front of her.

She felt a cold chill run down her body and looked to her right. She saw a marigold crocodile struggling as it tried to approach her, her eyes were bleeding. Ariana got up with great difficulty and dashed towards Vera. While Vera started to lift herself from the ground she looked over and saw Ariana coming, her fist was flying towards her face when suddenly the ground started to shake. Ariana tumbled towards the ground missing Vera completely. "Arizona run!" Vera screamed as the crocodile tried desperately to drag itself towards the water.

It was too late, the ground erupted and out popped out the gigantic, indigo, two headed snake from before. Vera paled, it really was over now, she failed, her familiar was going to be eaten and she would get a severe punishment for going against the school rules. There was nothing left for her but utter defeat. Ariana looked into Vera"s face and smiled. She brought up her hand and pinched Vera"s nose. "Do you admit defeat or do you want me to knock you out?" She asked playfully. Vera blinked her eyes a few times unable to utter a single words. Ariana let Vera go, she pointed towards the snake and watched as Vera followed her direction.

Vera"s jaw dropped as she caught sight of something unheard of. A chibi, pink deer was sitting on top of one of the snake"s heads, lazily looking down towards his master. While the other snake head was locked on to Arizona, waiting for the command. "You said so yourself the creatures here are meant to kill familiars and it looks like your familiar is on the hit list." Vera turned and saw that Arizona had lost all her strength. She stopped moving and turned her head towards master pitifully as she let out shallow breaths.

"I concede!" She started to shout. "You win! Please Professor Rain end the battle!" There was a moment of silence and the sky above flashed black a few times. "Winner, Ariana Drake!" He shouted and the two headed snake started to retreat. Vasu gave the snake"s head a rub with his own head before floating back down into his master"s arms. The sun"s position suddenly moved and the stands appeared. Students were cheering and applauding enthusiastically. They had never seen such a battle.

Vera got up and went to grab hold of Arizona. She wasn"t a big familiar but she was very long. She scooped her up and pressed her against her chest as the familiar groaned in delight. "I"m sorry Arizona, I"m so sorry." Vera cried as tears spilled over top of the crocodile"s head. Ariana sighed and walked up to Vera. She placed her hand on the crocodile"s head. "You made your familiar take your wounds, she doesn"t hate you for it but I don"t think she has to suffer from it either." She said gently as her hand started to glow white. Vera stopped crying, she watched as Arizona"s leg slowly healed and her eyes return to normal.

"What are you doing?!" Vera asked in astonishment. Ariana pulled back her hand. "Healing your familiar." She said as her body went side ways. "Ariana?!" Vera called out as Ariana hit the ground. "Medic! We need a medic!" Ariana heard Vera scream as she closed her eyes. "I"m fine, I"m just tired." She said as everything turned black.
