I gather from this that about 21 of the 38 sons have followed the same pursuits as their parents, and that the remaining 17 have followed different ones; but the distinction is not always clear, so other persons may form slightly different estimates. Anyhow, it appears that the two characteristics of (1) general ability and (2) a pa.s.sion for a particular pursuit are transmitted more or less independently.
