Chapter Five

Gu Tian Tian’s hands presses onto something hard. She mistakes it as An Yin Zhu’s stomach, and rubs it to check. But it’s not his stomach.

‘Don’t move,’ An Yin Zhu says.

An Yin Zhu secretly wants Gu Tian Tian to continue rubbing his body, but he doesn’t want to scare her away.

In contrast, Gu Tian Tian remembers her cla.s.smate talking about what happens between a female lead character, and a male lead character in a novel bedroom scene. Her hands immediately stops rubbing An Yin Zhu’s body, and she regrets she can’t chop off her hands. She’s grateful they’re lying in the dark, but realises she’s sitting on top of him in a compromising position.

An Yin Zhu holds onto Gu Tian Tian’s shoulders, she pushes his chest, but he pulls her closer to him. It makes her remember Ye Qi Cheng’s question, ‘Yin Zhu, is Tian Tian the little bride the An family raised since she was a little girl?’

An Yin Zhu’s friends seeing Gu Tian Tian as his little bride makes her feel shy. She doesn’t know where to put her hands so she lies still on his body.

The lights turn on. Gu Tian Tian jumps out of the bed, and An Yin Zhu doesn’t stop her.

‘I’m going to sleep,’ Gu Tian Tian says.

Gu Tian Tian runs out of An Yin Zhu’s bedroom, and hears him laughing. She glares at her hands for rubbing his poisonous little brother.

Unlike feeling scared after seeing a scary movie, Gu Tian Tian feels regret. She regrets she can’t materialise a hole for her to fall into.

Gu Tian Tian showers, change clothes, and wipes her wet hair with a towel. A shadow in the bathroom mirror makes her jumpy, and sh reasons it’s delayed paranoia after seeing a scary movie.

Gu Tian Tian runs to her bedroom door, opens it wide, and turns on all the bedroom lights. She tosses the towel onto the bed, because she’s scared the towel will blur her vision. It’s her habit to run to An Yin Zhu when she’s scared, but she is still embarra.s.sed about what happened earlier in his bedroom. She’s more scared of his little brother than being possessed by a ghost.

Gu Tian Tian lies on her bed, and looks at the ceiling. A while later, she hears footsteps.

‘Why is your bedroom door open?’ An Yin Zhu asks.

Gu Tian Tian’s guts says her bedroom door is opened because she’s a big chicken.

An Yin Zhu sits on Gu Tian Tian’s bed. ‘Sit up, and dry your wet hair.’

Gu Tian Tian sits up on the bed, and An Yin Zhu grabs the hair dryer. ‘Sit closer to me, I’ll blow dry your hair.’

Gu Tian Tian sits closer to An Yin Zhu, he turns on the hair dryer, and she feels hot air through her wet hair. She looks at their reflections in the mirror. He is running his fingers through her hair, and focusing on drying her hair, but she feels awkward.

When Mrs. An discovered Gu Tian Tian’s bad habit of not blow drying hair after a shower, Mrs. An always asks An Yin Zhu to blow dry Gu Tian Tian’s hair. Gu Tian Tian used to think An Yin Zhu listens to Mrs. An’s order because he knows Gu Tian Tian hates using a hair dryer.

Gu Tian Tian blushes, looks away from the mirror, and wants to crawl into a hiding spot.

An Yin Zhu pauses the hair dryer. ‘Why are you bowing your head?’

Gu Tian Tian’s hands fans her face. ‘It’s hot.’

An Yin Zhu adjusts the hair dryer to low heat, continues to blow dry Gu Tian Tian’s hair, but she feels like her face is hotter than a boiled egg. Every time his fingertips touches her scalp, it gives her body strong tingles, and makes her want to hide.

An Yin Zhu turns off the hair dryer, and smiles cheekily. ‘Can you sleep on your own?’

Gu Tian Tian hmphs. ‘Of course.’

An Yin Zhu laughs. ‘Then why did you turn on all the lights in your bedroom?’

‘I like wasting electricity and money,’ Gu Tian Tian denies. ‘I’m sleepy. Go back to your bedroom.’

An Yin Zhu stands up, and walks to the door. ‘If you’re scared to sleep on your own, you can bring your pillow and bedsheet to my bedroom.’

Gu Tian Tian wants to smash the hair dryer onto An Yin Zhu’s handsome face.

An Yin Zhu walks outside Gu Tian Tian’s bedroom, and shuts the door. She looks out the closed window, and can’t sleep.

In the bedroom next door, An Yin Zhu lies in his bed, and can’t sleep either. He looks at his opened door, but doesn’t see Gu Tian Tian walking through his door. He gets out of bed again. If his little mountain doesn’t want to come to him then he’s going to climb the little mountain.

An Yin Zhu carries a pillow, and bedsheet to Gu Tian Tian’s bedroom. Suddenly she opens the door. ‘What are you doing here?’

‘I can’t sleep because of the bright lights shining through your bedroom door,’ An Yin Zhu says.

‘I turned on my bedroom lights, not yours,’ Gu Tian Tian says. ‘It shouldn’t affect your sleep.’

‘I suffer from a common rich person’s syndrome, stinginess,’ An Yin Zhu says. ‘Thinking about you burning money keeps me awake.’

The lights turn off. Gu Tian Tian turns on the nightlight, and An Yin Zhu lies on the bed next to her.

Gu Tian Tian used to share the same bed with An Yin Zhu when she was a little girl. The last time she shared the same bed with An Yin Zhu before tonight, she was fifteen, that night she also watched a scary movie with him.

The eighteen-year-old Gu Tian Tian kicks An Yin Zhu’s legs. ‘Go back to your bedroom.’

‘You should sleep,’ An Yin Zhu says.

An Yin Zhu is lying straight on the two metre wide bed. He’s lying on the left side of the bed, Gu Tian Tian’s lying on the right, and there’s a metre distance between their bodies.

Gu Tian Tian closes her eyes, she still can’t sleep, but it’s not fear that’s keeping her awake. She doesn’t know why she can’t sleep with An Yin Zhu sleeping next to her.

Ten minutes later, Gu Tian Tian sleeps to the morning.

At nine in the morning, Gu Tian Tian wakes up, and is relieved An Yin Zhu isn’t lying next to her on the bed. She gets out of bed, washes her face, brushes her teeth, changes clothes, and walks downstairs to the kitchen.

‘Xiao Tian, when are you going shopping with Yin Zhu?’ Mrs. An asks.

‘Mummy An, I’ll ask him,’ Gu Tian Tian says.

Gu Tian Tian texts An Yin Zhu. ‘When are you taking me shopping?’

An Yin Zhu quickly replies. ‘In the afternoon.’

‘Mummy An, he says in the afternoon,’ Gu Tian Tian says.

Gu Tian Tian b.u.ms at home in the morning. In the afternoon, An Yin Zhu takes her shopping to buy things she needs for college.

At night, An Yin Zhu takes Gu Tian Tian to eat dinner at the five star restaurant at the An Hotel.

‘An Yin!’ a man calls.

Gu Tian Tian and An Yin Zhu turns their heads around. They see a man wearing a navy suit and gla.s.ses. She believes if An Yin Zhu has a trust worthy face in the eyes of the elderly then the man in the navy suit has a face appealing to women.
