At the Kang family old residence, Elder Kang sat at his desk, flipping through a stack of papers with a grave expression.

Once Kang Jun had arrived, Secretary Rong entered the room and then announced both Kang Jun"s arrival and his own departure. Elder Kang did not react. He just continued doing as he"d been, for what felt like hours.

Outside, Secretary Rong bid farewell to Kang Jun and then he gave Mr. Long a strange gaze.

Realizing this Kang Jun, sighed.

"Ignore him."

Walking to Elder Kang"s study, Kang Jun fixed his suit, before turning to Mr. Long. He handed the man his phone. "Come get me if anything happens."

"Yes, sir."

When he entered the room, Kang Jun immediately a.s.sessed the old man"s face. Seeing the elder raise his head to meet his gaze, Kang Jun felt a coldness almost comparable to his own.

No one spoke for a moment and the atmosphere in the room was dark but the whole time Kang Jun was calm.

"Tell me something…"

Kang Jun remained silent.

"Why do you want to marry?"

Kang Jun sighed.

"I don"t."

This answer made Elder Kang"s face twist in confusion. Seeing this, Kang Jun couldn"t help but sigh again.

"Marriage is personally irrelevant, but it"s necessary for the grander scheme of things."

What a mature response from the man…

It was so mature, in fact, it made pride swell up inside the elder"s heart, almost causing him to forget why he"d called the man over.

A wave of silence washed over the room once more, as Elder Kang rubbed his chin.

Kang Jun: "If that"s all, I"ll be going now."

Hearing this, Elder Kang snapped out of his silent state.

"Wait. I need something of you."

Kang Jun: "What?"

Elder Kang took a deep breath.

"First, I"d like to know if you spoke to old man Qiao?"

Kang Jun answered affirmatively.

Hearing this, Elder Kang raised an eye brow. "And did he accept your apology?"

Kang Jun wanted to laugh but he held himself back. Apologize? For what? Internally, he was full of amus.e.m.e.nt but when he spoke, his voice was completely emotionless.

"Grandfather, I said I would speak to him, and I did, but as for an apology, I won"t give one if I don"t believe I"m in the wrong."

The elder felt his teeth clench. He knew it… this man was the type to completely ignore what his actions could do his familial relations. If he wasn"t so intelligent and tactful, Elder Kang would have expelled the man from the family years ago.

Kang Jun: "Even if I did, it"s not like he would accept it. You and I both know what that man thinks of me."

Kang Jun looked straight into his grandfather"s eyes when he said that. Seeing the sincerity in Kang Jun"s stare, Elder Kang averted his slightly and glanced at the picture on his desk.

Yes. Elder Kang knew Elder Qiao"s thoughts well. But it wasn"t only about Kang Jun but Kang Liang also. Even when Kang Zhi was alive, Elder Qiao didn"t like him much either. The only reason he had accepted Kang Zhi was because of the boy"s marriage to his precious granddaughter and unlike the other two, Kang Zhi was always a people pleaser. Though not in the flirtatious way that Kang Liang was.

The elder never understood why Elder Qiao hated his three favored grandsons, but he had never asked. Once the man decided something, it was hard to change his mind.

Kang Jun: "I don"t need to understand his prejudice towards me and the only reason why I didn"t apologize is simple. So, I won"t insult your intelligence by telling you."

Hearing this, the elder frowned. He knew exactly why Kang Jun didn"t apologize. The man never did useless things and there was no point to apologize to a man who wouldn"t accept it. Elder Kang had been the one to teach him this, after all.

Elder Kang sighed.

"At least try to make amends. Tell him you won"t fight with Qiao Lan anymore. You"re a man of your word. I think even old man Qiao knows this."

When Elder Kang had finished speaking, Kang Jun let out a cold and emotionless laugh.

"As you said, I am a man of my word. You know as well as I do that I cannot promise that."

Usually, this would be when the elder would slam on the table and throw a fit but today, he didn"t do any such thing. Instead, he said,

"Jun, you must understand…" Elder Kang"s voice was low and weak but Kang Jun didn"t change his manner."Making an enemy out of Qiao Jianhong would be a mistake on your part."

Elder Kang didn"t want anything bad to happen to Kang Jun. Having one grandson die in his lifetime was enough for the elder. He didn"t want to witness any more death until he experienced his own.

Watching the old man become weak, Kang Jun frowned.

What did the elder"s words mean? If he had said it in a different tone, Kang Jun would have considered it a threat but the man sounded conflicted instead.

Kang Jun wasn"t sure why Elder Kang was so obsessed with Elder Qiao. In Kang Jun"s opinion, the man was a complete a.s.shole. He knew that the man had done many great things for the country but still, it didn"t excuse the man"s behavior. Kang Jun thought so bad of him that since the first day Kang Jun had met him, he had decided to avoid altercations with the old man.

Though, despite this decision, Kang Jun wasn"t going to let anything stand in the way of his goal.

If Kang Jun and Qiao Jianhong were to fight against each other, would his grandfather even be on his side or would the man be neutral? Kang Jun didn"t expect anything from those in his family. They had to make their own choices and he wouldn"t beg nor bribe them to come over to him.

Once he got home he was sure that he would think his family situation over until he felt his head hurt. But right now wasn"t the time, he simply wanted to leave.

Kang Jun: "I"m sure this isn"t the only thing you wanted to talk to me about."

Hearing this, Elder Kang"s face turned dark and he gave a dry laugh. "Yes…"

He had something very important to show him.

"Sit." Elder Kang said as he gestured to the chair right across from him.

Usually, Kang Jun would reject the old man but this time, he took the old man"s offer and sat down. He calmly laid back in the chair like a king sitting on his throne and looked at the old man in the eyes.

Seeing that he had Kang Jun"s full attention, Elder Kang carefully placed a file in front of his grandson.

When he flipped it open, the old man said,

"Lu AnLing."

Hearing the girl"s name come out of the old man"s mouth, Kang Jun was not shocked. He had expected him to know about the girl at one point in time. The fact that it had taken Elder Kang this long, was what actually shocked Kang Jun.

"26 years old. ex-Lounge singer, freelance translator, and an a.s.sistant. She was adopted into the Lu family when she was 15. Prior to that, she lived with her single father in the country side. He was a teacher. People say that her mother died giving birth to the girl, and then when she was 14, she and her father were in a car accident which took her father"s life."

Kang Jun just listened to his grandfather as he stated things that he already knew. He didn"t see why any of this was important but he knew that if he interrupted the man, his time there would be elongated. So he didn"t.

Elder Kang rubbed his chin. "Then when she was 19, she was strangely sent abroad… Do you know why?"

Kang Jun c.o.c.ked his head. Though this wasn"t because he was curious, he was just playing a role so his grandfather would hurry.

"This took some digging, but we were able to find out that the girl had gotten herself pregnant, but the child was stillborn. After that she was sent to a special inst.i.tution abroad because she was depressed. She was even on suicide watch." The elder had a faraway look in his eyes. "There was so much tragedy in such a young girl"s life."

Hearing all of this, Kang Jun frowned. When he had done research on her. He had seen all this, but hearing his grandfather going through the painful events of Lu AnLing"s life, made Kang Jun"s heart wrench.

He could only imagine how she had suffered.

"Your point is?"

"My point?" Elder Kang"s voice filled with slight darkness. "Do you really think this girl will be able to handle being your wife? Do you think she"ll want to be part of a family where she must support you and suffer?"

Kang Jun was quiet for a moment. "That will be her choice to make."

Elder Kang sighed. "You can have anyone else. Why her?"

"Why not her?"

Hearing the boy"s answer and the heartfelt look in his eyes, Elder Kang was speechless. What had this Lu AnLing girl done to catch his grandson"s eye? Even if the elder tried to ask the girl herself she wouldn"t have known what to say.

Kang Jun lifted himself off the chair and he fixed his suit.

Elder Kang frowned. "Sit down, I"m not done!"

Elder Kang"s voice raised a couple decimals, which caused Kang Jun to pause. Annoyed, he looked at the old man with a cold gaze and a frown.

Both men opened their mouths, they were about to have an argument, but then, there was a knock at the door.

"Come in." Elder Kang said.

In came Mr. Long.

"Yes?" Kang Jun said.

Mr. Long"s face was slightly pale. Seeing this, Kang Jun was alarmed but he didn"t show it on his face.

"Ugh, sir, there"s an emergency that requires your immediate attention."

Turning to his grandfather, Kang Jun excused himself, but before he could leave, Elder Kang turned to look at Mr. Long.

"Will this take long?"

Seeing that Elder Kang was talking to him, Mr. Long froze for a moment. The elder wasn"t as intimidating as Kang Jun but he had heard many rumors about the man in his glory days, and it was enough to make Mr. Long cower.

"Yes, I think it will."

Not liking Mr. Long"s answer, Elder Kang clenched his teeth.

"Fine," he muttered before he turned to look at Kang Jun with a piercing gaze. "This conversation isn"t done,"

"If that"s all you have to say, I"ll be taking my leave." Kang Jun brushed off his suit and began to walk towards the door. Remembering something, he turned back to the elder and said, "The contract specifies that you cannot interfere. Remember that."

Kang Jun"s words caused the elder to frown.

Elder Kang understood that he could not interfere, but that wouldn"t stop him from doing other things…

He didn"t expect Kang Jun to be able to court the girl or convince her to marry him. However, if he did, she would end up being his future granddaughter-in-law whether the old man liked it or not, so he was going to, at least, try to give her a chance.

Either way, he wanted to see if she was worth liking.
