Chapter 1473: The breakfast you made doesn’t taste bad.
“Auntie, I’m not angry.” She shook her head.
“That’s great; that’s great. I’ll take note in future; you, too, Jingwan. Pei Ge is now the most senior.”
“Mhm, auntie; I’ll take note.” Qu Jingwan nodded obediently as she calculated the time internally.
The two hours of torture made her feel as though she were sitting on pins. She kept looking at the 19th-century, German pendulum clock on the wall. It was as if an army of ants were crawling toward her heart and biting it. Every second was torturous and pressing.
“Pei Ge, come sit beside me. Let me look at the sapphire on the ceremony girl. How is it?”
She did not realize that Madam Ji had changed the channel. Now, the television was showing a rare sapphire dug out from Africa last month. Experts estimated that this jewel was nearly on the same tier as the prized gem—an exorbitant, s.h.i.+mmering ruby—of a certain luxury store.
“Its color isn’t bad and its l.u.s.ter is the creme de la creme.”
“You like it?”
“I like it.”
Pei Ge nodded. Regardless of its price or craftsmans.h.i.+p, it was a rare gem. More importantly, this sapphire was similar to the one she had before.
“If you like it, I’ll buy it and give it to you.”
Hearing this, both ladies looked up at the older woman. The rude shock in their eyes was highly similar.
“No, auntie; I can’t want something so expensive.” Before she could figure out how she would make the older woman believe that she was not pregnant, the latter wanted to give her such a high-priced sapphire.
Qu Jingwan’s hands clenched the bottom of her dress tightly. She needed to act fast. She had no idea that her pregnancy was such an important thing in the older woman’s eyes, such that she could easily give her a ruby worth tens of millions. If Pei Ge had not barged into the room, the person pregnant today might have been her.
Pei Ge, I’ll take back all those you’ve stolen from me!
The lady swore in her heart. She kept looking at the pendulum clock, and Madam Ji had finally taken notice of it.
“Why do you keep looking at the clock? Is there anything in it?”
“Huh? N-Nothing. I had Auntie Zhang get some groceries, but she’s not back yet.”
“Someone will send the groceries over, so why did you make her go personally?”
“It’s like this; Pei Ge is pregnant, so I had Auntie Zhang go to the pharmacy and get some herbs to nourish the baby. I plan to make a nouris.h.i.+ng soup this afternoon; it won’t do for her to keep having morning sickness. Don’t you think so, too?”
“To nourish the baby; that’s a great idea.”
As long as it involved the baby in Pei Ge’s tummy, the older woman would understand.
“Thanks for the effort, then.” Pei Ge half-believed it. This nouris.h.i.+ng herbs for the fetus could be for abortion. Since she was not pregnant, it did not matter if it was for abortion.
“Aiya! You’re being polite with me again.” Qu Jingwan lay affectionately on Madam Ji’s shoulder. “This is the newest member of our Ji family. As an auntie, I must welcome the child well.”
“Right, right, right. What she said is correct. You should listen to her. Her culinary skills aren’t bad, and I didn’t even know this before.” The older woman was all smiles. She initially thought that a pandemonium would break out between the two ladies, but she did not expect Qu Jingwan to be so magnanimous and understanding. It was not easy for her to put aside her status as the eldest mistress of the Qu family and take care of Pei Ge.
“Auntie, look at what you’re saying; I’m most willing to take care of her. As long as she gives birth to a healthy baby, I’ll be happy, too.” Qu Jingwan turned to look at the clock. Time had pa.s.sed for so long, but Pei Ge had not had a reaction.
“Do you hear that? Jingwan is so understanding. Next time, you two need to live harmoniously together. Now that you’re the most important person in the family. if you need anything, just tell me. Also, you can’t talk about going to work in the company again. You’re our family’s daughter-in-law now and not not just some white-collar worker.”
“I get it.” Pei Ge nodded as her beautiful eyes s.h.i.+fted onto the lady, who was leaning on the older woman’s shoulder. Although she could not see her expression clearly, she could tell that the latter was suppressing her fury.
“That’s good, then. I just hope to see the two of you living harmoniously.”
“Auntie, don’t worry; Pei Ge and I will be well.”
“Great, great. It’s really my blessing.”
Two hours pa.s.sed, and Madam Ji went upstairs to look at the three children. In the living room, Pei Ge was looking at Red Star’s summary report using her laptop; there were just too many details to check. Her laptop had been taken away five times by the man’s mother this morning alone. She finally took out her laptop and had another look at the company, which was worth four times more than the Ji Group.
“Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?” Qu Jingwan looked curiously at this woman, who appeared to be feeling normal. Could the medicine be ineffective? It could not be since it came from her grandmother.
“Nothing.” Pei Ge’s eyes were fixated on the files on the laptop, so she did not think too deeply about the lady’s words.
“Your stomach isn’t hurting?”
“Why will my stomach hurt out of the blue?” She only looked up at this point, confusion flas.h.i.+ng across her eyes.
“Nothing. I’m just afraid of you feeling unwell.”
“You’re so kind-hearted.”
“What are you talking about? Do I have to doom you to death?”
“Even if it’s not so serious, you won’t be so kind-hearted.”
“You… You really can’t tell a good person. Just pretend that I didn’t say anything. I’ll leave; I’ll leave, alright?” Qu Jingwan got up and walked toward the staircase, fuming.
“Thank you for your breakfast.” Sitting on the sofa, Pei Ge continued to bury herself in the reports about Red Star.
The lady paused her steps. She did not expect the other to thank her for the ‘special’ breakfast.
“You’re welcome.” She went up the stairs after saying that.
She entered her room in a baffled state. Why did that woman not have any reaction? She clearly saw her finis.h.i.+ng that milk drink. Could it be that she had made a mistake during the process of mixing that medicine with the milk? Could it have been the microwave?
She walked out of the house and looked down from the top. Pei Ge, who was still in the living room, did not show signs of a miscarriage.
Could it be that the woman was really not pregnant?
She was taken aback by this bold thought of hers. If this trick did not work, she would use another.
Looking at this flight of stairs, the corners of her mouth raised as the scheme, which she had in mind, began to unfold.
Sitting on the sofa, Pei Ge was unaware that, ever since she came back from the company, she was being schemed against by a certain lady. The information on the screen about Red Star was all-encompa.s.sing. This was the first time she had felt that something was difficult to handle.
