Queen Of Nothing

Chapter 16

At the sound of my brother"s voice I jerked away from Sir Ramneal, glaring. "...hate you. I hate you." I groaned.

"Of course you do, Princess." He chucked. "Come, the prince is waiting."

I just nodded my head and darted down the hall willing my pulse to slow and the color to fade from my cheeks. I didn"t need Byrin worrying about... whatever it was that was developing between Sir Ramneal and I. It was already enough that I was worried over it.

When I reached his cell, my brother stood with a smile. "Should have known."

"I said I"d visit, Rin."

He laughed as if there was nothing strange about us talking from opposite sides of a cell. A behavior that was rather normal for him, Byrin had a tendency to find the sunniest parts of life but not in a naive way. No, he simple took his salt with his sugar and allowed the sugar to still taste sweet. "You"ve said many things over the years, Bella. Most of them didn"t happen."

"On time." I groaned. "I broke one promise, five years ago, and I"ll never hear the end."

He laughed at footsteps stopped right next to me. "Warning, Sir Ramneal, never trust my sister with your sweets. No matter what she might say."

I groaned while Sir Ramneal chuckled. "So, you have a sweet tooth do you, Princess?"

I groaned unlocking the cell door and stepping in while my brother laughed. "When we were children our mother gave us these incredible imported chocolates for Arlyn"s Moon and I had to leave the festival early to attend my father at a meeting. After only eating one, I entrusted them to my darling sister to take back to the palace for me after she swore she wouldn"t eat them... but when I returned the next day both boxes were empty."

I groaned, entirely embarra.s.sed but Sir Ramneal just burst into laughter. "That"s just cruel, Princess."

"They were good..." I mumbled.

"I was so upset," Rin continued. "Mom tried to get me more but as luck would have it, the old chocolatier had died a few weeks before taking the recipe with him and so I"ll never have them again."

Once more the two of them laughed but I swatted my hand at them. "Oh, enough you too. I"m not apologizing again. Anyways, I want to heal you more."

"Princess..." Sir Ramneal said surprisingly firm.

"Sir Ramneal." I said holding up my hands to silence him. "I am fine. I need to do this, not just for my brother but for my own peace of mind."

Rin looked between us. "What happened at the funeral yesterday?" I just looked at my brother with wide eyes. "What? If you think that monster didn"t come down here to brag about burning our father you"re a fool."

I clinched my fist. "Nothing. Just typical monster behavior."

Sir Ramneal crossed his arms over his chest, squaring his shoulders. "He almost killed you, Arabella. It would be foolish to exert yourself right now."

Byrin gasped but I growled. "I said I am fine!"

"What happened?!" Rin demanded in the no nonsense tone that was all prince bare of any hint of my little brother.

"It started with him making your sister light the pyre under threat and ended with him pushing her face first into the ashes..." his voice strained. "And holding her there until I thought I... we would see her die. And there was plenty more in between."

Rin instantly began pacing about his cell like a bull that had been poked and prodded and was now ready to charge. "I"ll kill him!"

"Honestly, get in line, Rin. But I am fine. Let me heal you."

"If you"re so concerned," Sir Ramneal said stepping toward us. "I will heal him."

"Absolutely not!" I said putting my foot down. "He turned his magic on you yesterday! Or did you forget that you could have died as well! And then you healed me! You are to use no more magic!"

It was silent as both men just stared at me, neither blinking. My checks reddened as Rin burst into laughter. "I didn"t know you felt so strongly for him, Bella. By all means, heal me in his stead."

My blush only deepened as Sir Ramneal wrapped arms around me smiling. "Does this mean we have your blessing, Prince Byrin?"

I shoved Sir Ramneal off of me with a groan. "Stop fooling around."

Byrin just smiled. "So long as my sister is happy, I am. But I fear the rest of the world will not feel the same."

I just shook my head stepping to my brother, placing my hands on his shoulders. "It doesn"t matter. We"ve more pressing concerns."

"I"d agree. Foremost being how to put a sword in that b.a.s.t.a.r.d king."

I nodded as I began channeling my magic through my brother trying to pushing the healing warmth through his entire body. After only a few seconds he started to look exponentially better. The bruising faded, the color returned to his cheeks, and he stood straighter. But still I continued until my vision began to cloud over. Only when I felt as if I could no longer stand did I let go. I stumped backward and found myself pressed against a firm chest as Sir Ramneal wrapped his protective arms around me.

"Princess... that was foolish."

"Fortunately, I have you." He said nothing but his arms tightened around me. "You look good, Rin. Next time I"ll bring you some water to wash with. But for now, you should eat."

He looked at the basket of food I brought with a slight smile. "I will but you should go rest. Sir Ramneal, please take my sister to bed."

Sir Ramneal nodded. "Of course, Your Highness." He then scooped me up into his arms with a bright smile. After leaving cell he sat me on my feet only long enough to lock the cell door before picking me up once more. "Take care, Your Highness."

"Watch over her, Sir Ramneal. She"s all I and

Morea have."

"With my life." He said as he carried me down the hall. Half way up the stairs he smiled at me. "You"re really quit difficult. You are aware of this?"

"One of my many charms." I smiled at him.

He stopped walking and leaned down pressing his lips against my own. "Indeed."
