"File Manager" Mo Fei: "Group rules. If you have clips, send them straight to the file archives, not to the group itself. You"re still a newbie, so a one-day chat ban will suffice this time. Next time, no exceptions."
Li Xianyu: "..."
Why ban me from chatting?
I didn"t send anything obscene… I was just playing around. I"m just a person who writes sensational headlines… Wait, didn"t you guys realise that?
Li Xianyu felt a chill down his spine.
Did the elders take it as real news? I"m finished, I"d get hammered to death!
At this instant, he received a private message from another account, with the ID "Demon Descendants Law Enforcement Department, Mission Center". The message read: "Jiuhua Youth City - detection of supernatural occurrences. Please investigate this within 24 hours and solve this case. If you need any a.s.sistance, please call the center"s hotline: 021-76x.x.x35."
A Word doc.u.ment was attached along with the message.
Jiuhua Youth City was where Li Xianyu stayed at.
There was a mission so fast? Furthermore, it was in his own residence. Li Xianyu felt nervous yet excited as he opened the word doc.u.ment which contained further elaborations regarding the case.
The victim was a man in his early thirties. His looks were average, but once Li Xianyu had taken a look at the picture, he was shocked to realize that this man was actually the boss of Shaxian Delicacies. He was the guy whose deceased mother had blown cold winds onto his neck at the restaurant.
Was it because of her indignity that she had done this to her son?
Li Xianyu studied the case files thoroughly and shouted at the top of his voice, "Great-Grandma, San Wu, there"s a mission! Come out, quick!"
In the digital age exploding with information, the contacts of Baoze Group accessed the systems of hospitals, the police, as well as many other state owned enterprises. The system would provide them with all cases that could not be explained by science.
The boss of Shaxian Delicacies had been admitted to a mental hospital a few days ago for a checkup. His case had been recorded in the system and was swiftly extracted by the officials in Baoze"s internal departments. Hence, the task was a.s.signed to Li Xianyu, who lived nearest to the venue.
San Wu walked out of the room upon hearing his voice. Great-Grandma, after many shouts by Li Xianyu, wandered out in her slippers as she scratched her hair and appeared frustrated.
Great-Grandma was a war spirit. By right, war spirits did not need to sleep. However, Li Xianyu had not awakened yet. Great-Grandma, lacking the essence of her grandson, would wilt like a flower.
Women were ultimately unable to break free of a man"s clutches, just like how a flower would not survive without dew.
These days, Great-Grandma had personally overseen Li Xianyu taking the capsule for his kidneys. She waited for the opportunity to suck him off, once he had recovered.
He waited until the two of them had stepped out before he continued, "The company just a.s.signed a mission to me."
He told them more about the mission. A few days ago, the boss of Shaxian Delicacies had went to a mental hospital for a checkup. He had told the doctor that he had dreamt of the same thing for a few days consecutively. In the dream, a man grabbed his legs, threatening to break them. When he woke up in the morning, he realized that his legs were bruised. The doctor, feeling that he was stressed out, suspected that he had hallucinated and caused the bruises himself.
However, the medication did not make the dreams go away. They persisted everyday, as the number of bruises on his legs increased. The last time he had the dream was the previous day, where he was forced to go to the hospital by his family members. By that time, he had completely lost his trust in the doctors. He insisted that a lingering spirit was behind all these.
His case records were captured by Baoze"s systems. The initial consensus was that a lingering spirit had caused this, and that this task was to be handed to the intern who lived the nearest: Li Xianyu.
According to the files, the boss had no instances of sleepwalking. The bruises on his legs when he woke up every morning was enough to ill.u.s.trate the bizarre nature of this case.
Li Xianyu had seen the boss"s deceased mother before. He was pretty sure that it was her lingering spirit that caused this.
However, there was one thing he could not comprehend…"If the lingering spirit was his mother, why was there a man in his dreams?" He frowned and looked towards Great-Grandma and San Wu for their opinions.
San Wu shook her head decisively and replied, "I don"t know."
"Don"t know?"
"Low-cla.s.s, I don"t touch these things," she continued in an elegant tone.
What she meant was that minor occurrences like lingering spirits were beneath her high standards.
Li Xianyu was speechless.
He looked towards Great-Grandma, who was playing with her fingers. Seeing her grandson look at him, she remembered her status as a great-grandmother. She began to a.n.a.lyze the events. "Aggrieved spirits entering people"s dreams is a very common occurrence. After the body goes to sleep, it is at its most vulnerable state: p.r.o.ne to intrusion by spirits. There are strong and weak spirits, determined by their level of anger. They harm people because they had a causal relations.h.i.+p with them, while they were still alive. However, there were fierce spirits who harmed people because they can. Yes, that"s all."
Li Xianyu listened attentively as she spoke. He raised his head and asked, "That"s all?"
Great-Grandma nodded. "Yes."
Li Xianyu asked, "May I ask, is your a.n.a.lysis related to this mission?"
Great-Grandma replied, "Think about it yourself."
Li Xianyu could not utter another word.
A piece of sophisticated a.n.a.lysis, but only a few details were useful.
It was as if she had not said anything. They were indeed two useless people.
Great-Grandma replied helplessly, "In my 150 years of life, I have interacted minimally with aggrieved spirits."
San Wu backed her up by saying, "Low-cla.s.s."
Two well-endowed big shots mocking a newbie like me?
Li Xianyu started to worry about his future.
As the sky darkened, Li Xianyu received a parcel from Baoze Group with a name tag inside. It read: Main Doctor, Li Xianyu.
The Second Mental Hospital.
This was a gadget for the mission, in order for him to blend in seamlessly.
In this age, it was no longer feasible to impersonate an expert and knock on another person"s door, saying, "Master, there are ghosts in your house, let me go in and exorcise those spirits!"
The other party would spit on your face and reply in disdain, "Scram, you have mental issues."
As he received the name tag, he hung an amulet which had been purchased online around his neck. It had been blessed by a reverend. Next, he hung a bronze coin attached to a red string around his arm. He wandered into the kitchen and put two big cloves of garlic into his bag, feeling satisfied and empowered.
"How are these ordinary things useful?" Great-Grandma asked in a mocking tone.
Li Xianyu replied, "I"m not like both of you. I"m just an ordinary human being. Without your help, I"m not going to seek death."
Great-Grandma rolled her eyes and pretended to yawn. "This is a small mission. San Wu, you can go with him. I"m going back to sleep."
San Wu suddenly pointed at Great-Grandma and said, "She"s scared now."
"Come back," Li Xianyu dragged her back as he stared into her pretty eyes. "You"re scared?"
"I"m not," Great-Grandma retorted.
San Wu said with conviction, "She is."
Li Xianyu said in a deep voice, "What are you scared of? Aren"t aggrieved spirits low cla.s.s things? Aren"t you an elder? I can only imitate your cowardice and not go for the mission then."
Great-Grandma stared at San Wu viciously as she thought to herself: This woman has issues. Why can"t she handle an ordinary aggrieved spirit? Why must she drag me down with her?
San Wu had attracted another wave of hatred just by acting the way she was.
Great-Grandma yelped and shook his hand off impatiently as she shouted, "It"s all because of your incompetence. Although I was glorified back then, I have no capabilities now. My powers have been sealed. Although aggrieved spirits are nothing much, they can bully me now. Why would I send myself there to be beaten up?"
Li Xianyu was shocked. "That"s true. Great-Grandma, will you die then?"
Great-Grandma replied proudly, "Nope. At most, I"ll be sent back into my pearl to recover. War spirits don"t die. We are good."
Li Xianyu heaved a sigh of relief as he dragged her towards the door. "That"s good. If I run into danger, I"ll throw you out as a meat s.h.i.+eld."
Great-Grandma flew into a rage as she stuck out her b.u.t.t to resist, while knocking on Li Xianyu"s brains. "I"m not going, I"m not going!"
However, she was dragged outside by Li Xianyu. San Wu followed behind them, expressionless.
Li Xianyu walked a few steps before he turned his head back and said, "San Wu, you forgot to close the door."
San Wu said, "Oh." Following which, she walked back to close the door.
