"W...what?"

His eyebrows rose in surprise. Quickly regaining his composure, he stared back at her piercing gaze. Their hands were still linked together, as if both of them were afraid to let the physical connection go.

"What do you mean?" Ren tried feigning innocence.

Tsubaki sighed. "I know you"re trying to find out about the incident 5 year ago but... it is necessary? Don"t you want to just go with the flow?"

Ren stood in silence. He didn"t have the clear answer to his wife"s question.

Tsubaki was being understanding enough by letting him investigating he matter in secret. She knew he was trying to know the truth, he had told her before. Because it might be dangerous, she didn"t ask him further for the sake of secrecy. But, by doing so she couldn"t help but getting worried over him.

"You know why I want to know the truth, love."

Tsubaki nodded. She knew. "You said it might bring me danger so you need to know the truth but I don"t want to see you being like this. If it could bring danger to me, it could bring danger to you too. That"s why if possible, I want you to stop investigating the incident."

Ren couldn"t argue back. Her reasoning was plausible. He knew the mastermind behind the incident was a powerful man, if not how could he still struggling over it? He could just let it go if it was truly an accident but by having someone covering the incident up, he knew it wasn"t the case.

"I couldn"t decide yet." Ren interlocked their fingers together. His thumbs swirled around her knuckles, he looked deep into her eyes. "If Akashi still didn"t get any clue, I"d stop. Unless something happens again that we could relate to the incident, I"d really stop."

"You don"t have to promise me anything," Tsubaki pulled her husband towards her, closing the distance between them. They were just a feet apart. She tilted her head, focusing her gaze on him.

She continued speaking.

"I know it"s a hard decision to be made and you couldn"t decide immediately. Just take your time and think it over. I"m not against you investigating the incident. I believe you have your own reason. It"s just that... sometimes I think you are focusing too much on it. You"re already a busy man and I don"t want you to be further burdened with another things."

Ren pursed his lips. It wasn"t that he didn"t understand her concerns. Even though he rarely showed it, but she knew when something was bothering him even with a glance on his face. They had just being together within a short time yet she was already adept in reading his mind.

"I understand." Ren pulled her into a hug. "I"ll seriously think about it."

Tsubaki smiled. "Alright. Let"s stop talking about it. It"s already 10PM, we should sleep now."

"But, it"s supposed to be our movie night," Ren disagreed.

Tsubaki chuckled. "Do you still want to watch it?"

His smile and the eagerness displayed through his eyes earning another laughter from her. "Alright. I supposed 10PM is still early for you."

They didn"t return to the living room for the movie. Ren switched on the TV inside the room and quickly picked a movie. Both of them snuggled under the duvet, leaning against the pillows. Since the room was dark, the only source of light came from the screen.

As the movie went along, Tsubaki could hear the sound of steady breathing coming from the man next to her. Her lips curled up into a smile. Her husband had been in a deep sleep. She reached out her hand to the remote controller to her right. She couldn"t move much for fear of disturbing his sleep. Ren had fallen asleep while holding her close to him.

Tsubaki switched off the TV before properly covering both of them with the duvet. She quietly looked at her husband"s handsome face. It was evident that he was pretty much exhausted with his work yet he still wanted to spend his free time with her instead of resting. She had called Matsuzaki earlier and finally knew that Ren always declined the former"s suggestion of having a proper lunch in order to finish his never-ending works sooner.

Having a huge workload and brushing off proper meals? They were a really bad combination. She needed to think of something.

As Tsubaki wanted to close her eyes, she suddenly recalled their conversation earlier. Although she herself was curious over what happened five years ago, if it would lead them to danger she would rather not knowing the truth at all.

The next day.

Tsubaki was busying herself in the kitchen. The lunch rush today was like the usual, it could be handle by her staffs. She decided to prepare lunch for Ren. There was a small kitchen beside the main one where they used to bake. Using a set of chopsticks, she arranged the pieces of tamagoyaki besides the steamed rice and tempura. She didn"t forget to include vegetables in the lunch box.

"Sister Tsubaki, he already arrives!" Chiyo peered inside the small kitchen and looked at her boss.

"Please tell him I"ll be done soon," Tsubaki replied.

She put the lunch box inside a small bag. Carefully tying the sash, she brought it outside. Hibiki was waiting for her beside the counter. He gave a small bow to her. Tsubaki smiled. She gave the bag to Hibiki.

"Please give this to Ren. Tell him I won"t forgive him if he still refuses to eat his lunch." Tsubaki had included a cup of creme brulee together as dessert.

"Will do, Madam. I doubt Master would still decline his lunch. I"ll get going. Master should be done with his meeting shortly."

"Thank you, Hibiki."

Hibiki bowed before leaving. Tsubaki rubbed her hands together. She hope he would like her surprise. After thinking long and hard, she decided to prepare him lunch whenever she wasn"t too busy with her job. If he didn"t mind, she wanted to request something from him. Let"s see how her plan went.

"I"m leaving now. If you guys need anything, just call me." Tsubaki untied her ap.r.o.n and put it on a hook inside their resting room. She washed her face before retouching her light make up.

"Oh! Do you want to go buying the birthday present?" Kohana asked, suddenly remember what Tsubaki had told them earlier.

"Yes. I still don"t know what should I buy for Grandma," Tsubaki sighed. She gathered her things and put all of them inside her bag. She would head to Spring City together with Kaede.

"Don"t worry, you"ll find it. After all, I don"t think your grandmother in-law is someone picky." Kohana tried to rea.s.sure Tsubaki. She had heard of Grandma Fuse from her boss. Seeing how the older woman pampering Tsubaki, it didn"t hard to conclude that she was an easygoing person.

"I"ll be off! See you tomorrow!"

Kaede had already booked a ride using an e-hailing app. She was waiting for Tsubaki outside the bakery. She had been accompanying her Madam to this bakery for days already. It"s safe to say that she became friends with almost the shop owners in the business district.
