Chapter 156: Greed and Madness (2)
The warhorses sped up as they reached the campsite. The knights tensed as they gripped their weapons.
‘It’s cold.’
It was winter and the wind blew ever so coldly as they rode through the night.
‘War…’
Joonb.u.m had experienced many battles, fighting monsters and humans. It was now all in the past. He remembered how foolish he used to be as he rode into the enemy campsite.
“Huh? Horses?”
“What?!”
“UGH!”
A soldier penetrated by a lance fell down. Hectos then picked up a spear and threw it toward a group of soldiers who were still surprised. Veriman swung his enormous halberd, killing a few soldiers in one strike.
“Wow, old man, still have some fight left in you?”
“HAH! Try me, you brat. Let’s see what you’ve got!”
Hectos and Veriman taunted each other as they hacked away at the soldiers. The other knights joined in and began raining h.e.l.l on the enemy camp.
“AHH! AMBUs.h.!.+”
“ENEMY ATTACK! WAKE UP!”
Joonb.u.m also rode in on his horse. He swung his giant sword around, slas.h.i.+ng soldiers with ease. The knights that came with him easily created havoc among the enemies.
“You b.a.s.t.a.r.ds! How dare you come here?!”
When Joonb.u.m rode further in, he faced a knight. He wore high-quality armor that was beautifully decorated. It looked expensive and looked different from the armor that hired knights would wear. Joonb.u.m closed in quickly.
“Ugh…”
The knight’s eyes opened in shock as he looked at Joonb.u.m. Blood was gus.h.i.+ng from his head and he fell down before he could realize what had just happened.
“Hmph.”
Joonb.u.m watched him fall and glanced around. Soldiers were beginning to wake up, running out at the shouts of the attack, only to be killed by the waiting knights.
‘More than half of them are drunk.’
Some were still deep asleep and even those who were awake weren’t sober.
“FIRE!”
“OUR FOOD IS ON FIRE!”
Then the soldiers began shouting from a distance. All the soldiers began running in the direction of the fire. The food was their life source. They instantly became pale as they heard the news.
‘Already? It must be Hectos,’ Joonb.u.m thought. Hectos was a strong, powerful man. He had a bad habit of drinking and didn’t think deeply, but Jackson filled the role.
Joonb.u.m moved out as he killed another soldier. He arrived at a tent where tens of soldiers and knights were blocking it. They formed a line to stop Joonb.u.m’s advance into the tent.
‘They won’t try to fight me when I’m alone?’
Joonb.u.m frowned. He looked at the back and found tens of n.o.bles inside with the smell of food and liquor.
‘Hah, they’re having a party.’
The world was in ruins and everyone was starving. Yet here they were, eating and drinking lavishly when they were here for war.
“W-who are you?! How dare you ambush us in the middle of the night! We didn’t even send the amba.s.sador to declare war!”
A knight began shouting at Joonb.u.m. Joonb.u.m laughed harrowingly.
“Hah…”
He did not want to become a hero. He was here with his mother to live in peace. He wanted to visit human lands but never intended to be deeply involved in human affairs. His intention was to stay inside the forest with the Ainos and live peacefully. That was why he didn’t put in all of his effort to help the refugees. But when he saw the inside of the tent, his mind was filled with rage.
“YOU COUNTRY RAT! I AM-”
“SHUT UP! I DON’T WANT TO HEAR FROM A COWARD HIDING BEHIND s.h.i.+ELDS!”
“WHAT?!”
As Joonb.u.m shouted, a knight came out of the rows of s.h.i.+elds. He was now glaring at the smirking Joonb.u.m, face to face.
“This is a present from Earth!”
A fist-sized rock was thrown over the s.h.i.+elds into the tent.
