When they arrived in the administration office, a middle-aged man met them and slightly bowed at Theo. On the office door was the name Dramache Veindervis, a.s.sistant Administrator."Please, have a seat, Your Highness. Lord Amberdrift, I need you to go to the investigation area. They need your statement regarding what happened."
"Can I go with him?" asked Amerth. He was curious and eager to see a sheinbinne user. However, he was not there to watch him use it on Fred but prevent it. For him, this ability was bizarre and should only be used in special occasions where its usage would make a great difference.
"No, young lad, you can"t. This is strictly forbidden when we"re investigating an important incident."
For Theo, he was also uneasy. After hearing the call for Fred to go to the office, the thought of a sheinbinne user just came to him and blurted it out without thinking.
He, actually, had this foretelling gift but had no way to master it.
The day before he was born, the cloudy sky opened as if someone pulled away the clouds to create an opening but no visible hand seen. From the middle of the opened sky, a vast light appeared and roiled to gain momentum and as it transformed into a blinding light, it struck down like lightning to the palace with no damaged done.
But that was not all, after the lightning, something resembling a shooting star followed and fell straight toward the chamber of the pregnant Lady Ermaenye.
The guards and the people outside the palace saw it all when it came about.
At the same time, there was a very important event that would determine a nation"s future that had been taking place in the palace.
The king was having a debate with the representative from another nation with a requisition letter from their king asking for a truce for the five-year-long war between the two kingdoms. Somehow, the fault lay on them. They invaded the borderlands of Xaeviel and declared it as theirs.
After that supernatural phenomenon, the king had to postpone the meeting and rushed toward Lady Ermaenye"s chamber.
When the king and Prince Threion, Theo"s father, reached the lady"s chamber, her labor pains had begun.
They believed that the phenomenon had significance not only with Theo"s birth but also with the truce.
The next day, the king concluded the meeting by simply asking the return of the lands and the people, unharmed. At the same time, the compensation he asked was erased from the signed truce agreement.
This was all done for the sake of Theo"s birth, calling it an auspicious phenomenon.
Theodrech became his given name in accordance with the attending wizard"s suggestions base from the two cases mentioned. Theo means principle and Drech means rule or rights. As a whole, it meant "Rule with Principles".
As Theo entered school, this gift emerged unexpectedly, saving his mother from a terrible death. From that day on, he tried to harness this ability which only turned up anytime with no warning. However, up to this day, Theo failed to master it.
He believed it appeared today for Fred"s sake. Hence, he had to do something to prevent them from using sheinbinne on Fred.
"What is the meaning of this, Lord Veindervis? The school"s security could use the barrier"s memory to reveal the incident earlier. What kind of investigation are you going to do? And why the need for Lord Amberdrift to be questioned?" Theo permeated magic in his voice to put pressure on the listener. He learned this from the king, who used this up to this time when needed.
After speaking, a familiar sensation set in, something he thought of asking Fred but deliberately forgotten. It was what he felt when Fred challenged him for a riddle battle. The warm and soothing feeling that meld in him.
He made a swift turn to Fred, a.s.suming the latter sent it to him.
While on Freidrech"s side, with his forewarning signs, he already concluded that this investigation thing was the continuation of what happened earlier when they entered the office. He thought of protesting or delaying the so-called investigation but when Theo spoke, the heat on his chest calmed down.
The warning was still present but it became a cooler sensation. He also had this same feeling at that time when he challenged Theo. He too looked at Theo, trying to understand what it was.
"Ah, your highness, we did check the barrier"s memory but the school security personnel would like to ask Lord Amberdrift some questions that would help us understand the motive behind the incident."
"Can I see the barrier"s memory?" asked Fred.
"Yeah, me too." The rest of the group expressed their curiosity.
"I request for you to show it to us, kind Sir," said Theo. Making full use of his authority.
Wenti slowly looked up at Theo and smiled, having second thoughts of his personality. She had a bad start with him years ago when they were younger and from then on she hated him. This time, she considered changing her mind.
"Ah," Dramache was unsettled.
Out of the blue, someone intervened.
"Theo, you might be a prince but it doesn"t mean you can trample your weight anywhere as you please." Theo"s second brother interjected.
"In that case, we will leave," said Theo, hesitant to stay longer with his big brother in the same room. Theo pulled Fred toward the door and the rest of the gang followed.
"Not so fast, this lowly study companion of yours has to stay," said Fielbert.
"Fielbert, watch your mouth," Theo said with a harsh tone.
That also triggered Fred and turned to face this other prince. He really hated this att.i.tude of royalties. Why must he always have to deal with this type of people?
Looking at this prince, Theo"s and his face, eye color, and other facial features were quite similar but Fielbert had tanned skin, like Fred. But the younger brother had this domineering air suppressing the older brother"s presence.
With this new found rank in society and task a.s.signed directly by the king, of which he had come to terms to accept it, made Fred"s self-confidence grew bigger. It was boiling in madness inside him now, ready to blow out.
Fred gave Prince Fielbert a fierce stare while walking in careless pace toward this prince who seemed to be sixteen years old and wearing a blue coat as well.
"This study companion has a name honored to me by the king himself and I"m also the heir of the great Griftein Knight Amberdrift. I"m not just anybody you can trample on…," he scratched his head, trying to remember the name Theo said earlier, and looked at Theo, "what"s his name?" his finger pointing at Fielbert.
Fred"s cla.s.smates giggled with shushing behind them. This irritated Prince Fielbert and clenched his fist.
Theo"s shoulders trembled, giggling inside, but covered it by feigning a cough. He glanced at Fielbert. "Excuse us, big brother." And stepped out of the office. "Don"t mind him, Fred. Let"s go to see Sir Ave. I want to have a word with him about this messy investigation they"re doing." And walked away, unconcerned.
Fred looked back at Fielbert for the last time and left. The four cla.s.smates followed.
After they left, Prince Fielbert stared at the other blue-coated person in the room.
"Hubiete, what happened? Why is Deimer in the delinquent cell? What were you trying to do to that plebeian?"
The other guy avoided an eye to eye confrontation and moved his line of sight to the window, watching Fred and company walking away.
"Fiel, how many times do I need to tell you? You might be a prince and temporarily the head of security here. but I only answer to Prince Lowis."
"What is his order this time?" asked Fielbert to Hubiete, asking in gritted teeth, greatly insulted.
"I can"t tell you. You better ask him. He"s your uncle anyway." After speaking, he walked out as well.
Fielbert slammed the table and broke it into two. The other students and the a.s.sistant administrator left him alone on that note.
Prince Fielbert was a man who honored justice and truth. And yet, he felt it was all futile. Even his being a prince was useless. Even that plebeian treated him like he had no authority over him.
He was a serious boy with a heart to please his father, most of all, his grandfather the king. When he was born, they treated him well but not the same as their eldest brother. But he strove hard to earn their recognition and praise.
He has his own achievements, but they were overshadowed by his big brother"s accomplishments.
Then, Theo came and… he felt lost and alone from then on.
Where was his worth?
Fielbert went to the office hallway where the pictures of the top graduates of the academy were displayed. His father was one of them.
He touched it and smiled with bitterness.
All of a sudden, while staring at it, it seemed Fred"s face superimposed on his father"s image. He gaped in shock. He couldn"t be sure but he had this impression that Fred had the same features as his father, as though Fred was the younger version.
