Tear A Path

Chapter 253

They were quite lucky.

That very thought went through every commanding officer"s head as they sat around the conference table. Although Travis was one of the stronger leaders, he wasn"t the only military leader left in the city. In reality 9 of them had been shifted with this part of the kingdom when the change happened. But after tonight"s attack, 2 had pa.s.sed on and another two were too injured to join tonight"s emergency meeting, leaving only 5 of them to pick up the slack.

Tonight, the opposition"s strategy was clear, to use the barrage of mortar fire to sneak in groups of elites that would take out their leaders. Each of the people seated here were greeted by the same thing as Travis right outside their front doors. Luckily each of them were considerable monsters in their own right, even those who went down only did so after taking down every enemy they could.

But the real reason why they were lucky was that the opposition chose them as the only targets. While important, they were considerably small in the big picture of things. If the other side had chosen to use the distraction to say open the gates and let their weapons in, the range of their weapons would reach the inner areas of their city where most of the population was relocated. The amount of lives they would be able to take would be devastating to say the least. The fact that less than 20 people, including the two captains had died could be considered a victory.

But although their enemies didn"t succeed per se, but they didn"t fail either. Their target was obviously to break their side"s chain of command, and if they had succeeded, it would be just as devastating a blow, as their side would be running around like headless chickens while the other side strategized attack after attack.

But taking 4 captains out of commission was troublesome none the less.

The captains job was not limited to simply cutting heads. In the city they handled their districts in terms of rationing supplies, keeping public security and simple day to day requirements to keep the city"s operations smooth. The management of these parts alone was quite a heavy burden as they had lost quite a lot of infrastructure in the shift. Dracas had it much easier in terms of this as their whole kingdom had been moved. They on the other hand only got a small part of the kingdom to work with.

Districts for example, were usually categorized by what they produced, some districts were specifically for markets, while some districts focused on blacksmiths, tailoring and so on. When their kingdom was split, they got a huge chunk of the fish markets, some of the black smith districts, a little in terms of tailoring but they had none of the residential areas. These were a huge hurdle when they first started.

First of all, they were shifted into an area which was high above sea level, though there were fish in the rivers, it wasn"t enough to complement the fish markets they had brought with them. The second problem was that t.i.thor as a kingdom could be considered quite modern, people only went to their jobs to work and went back to their home once they were done. With so little of the residential districts, most people had nowhere to go home to, so they had to spend a lot of time just trying to shuffle the people around. They were just lucky the shift happened in the day time or else everyone would be home, meaning they would have had infrastructure for work but no workers.

Even to this point, there was a lot of trouble to settle everyday in each district, before there were nine of them to split the work load, with four of them down, the rest had almost twice the work load every day.

The problems were even worse during war time. The reason they were captains was not only because of their own combat capabilities. Of course they were still stronger than all their men, but one man would never be more effective than a whole group of them. They were captains because they were able to understand their soldiers perfectly and order them in the best way so that their teams could be the most effective and support the overall strategy in battle.

They had lost the commanding capabilities mage captain, the cavalry captain, the rear guard"s captain as well as the spear men"s captain. Now the men under them would be split up and even if the captains they were under was still competent in their own right, he or she would probably be unable to command the men as efficiently as their former captains.

Additionally, even though their own teams became bigger, the captains now had more to cover in combat. Areas which previously were would be covered by the others. Like a human body, even though a person could probably still fight even though they lost an arm, there would always be areas that they could no longer guard.

Like this their situation was pretty dire to say the very least. It was no wonder the whole room was pretty solemn as they considered the problem at hand.

At this point of the meeting no one had said anything as all these problems weighed on their. That was until Tess, the Archer"s captain turned to look at two people who weren"t supposed to be at the table.
