The Amber Sword

Chapter 578

Requiem(5)

Brendel coughed and called out anxiously. However, Her Royal Highness had already moved closer to the Mother of Spiders with her sword in her hands. Although the Mother of Spiders Anarons had already gone through Elemental Activation and entered Elemental Enlightenment, it was still not a sapient creature; the Enlightenment was just a natural process.

The spider felt threatened by the princess’ approach. It turned somewhat confusedly towards the half-elf princess then raised its chelicerae high, ready to teach the insignificant little thing that had dared to challenge itself a lesson.

Brendel’s blood soon clotted. He immediately took out a bottle of holy water and poured it on himself, before rolling forward to the pile of cobwebs and yanking out the Halran Gaia.

By this time, the Mother of Spiders had already begun her a.s.sault Princess Gryphine. The half-elf maiden cautiously took a step back while shivering in the face of this terrifying monster and clenching her longsword with both hands. However, she still gritted her teeth and stood in the Aouine Army’s sword fighting stance.

If Brendel were to judge her pose, it would be perfectly up to snuff, near-perfect but meaningless. The princess’s sword grip showed that she had put a lot of effort into her swordplay and this meticulous starting position alone was enough to score three points in the Knight’s Tournament. Unfortunately, this was not the Knight’s Tournament.

Rather, it was a battlefield where combatants killed each other.

No one would speak of the rules of knighthood in the face of monsters. Monsters don’t, and neither does a swordsman.

Princess Gryphine did her best, gritting her teeth as she snapped her sword against the Mother of Spiders Anarons’ chelicerae. The immense force sent her whimpering to the ground. The second chelicerae then plunged down towards Her Royal Highness’ head.

“Watch out!” Brendel’s hands and feet were cold, fearful of seeing Princess Gryphine killed in front of his own eyes. It was at this moment that a white light lit up from Her Royal Highness, causing the Mother of Spiders’s huge chelicerae to stab the maiden’s left shoulder instead.

Although the half-elf maiden gritted her teeth, she still let out a suppressed, miserable scream. She had never felt such intense pain before in life, and couldn’t stop the tears that came to her eyes.

Luckily there was defensive equipment!

Brendel’s heart was beating like a drum; he was fortunate that he had no heart conditions, or he would have been literally scared to death. However, he couldn’t help but secretly let out a sigh of relief. He should have thought that as a member of the royal family, Princess Gryphine would definitely have one or two pieces of magical equipment to save her life.

In that instant, it was the difference between life and death. Brendel finally arrived and with a roar, he raised his sword and slashed at the Mother of Spiders’s neck. However, the scene of his sword rising and its head falling was just an imaginary one. All he saw was the Halran Gaia letting out a thunderous roar, the indestructible blade only managing to cause a stream of bright sparks to fly on the hard sh.e.l.l of Anarons. Brendel could not help but despair. Is this thing really that hard?

Brendel’s attack still caught the attention of the Mother of Spiders, who drew out the chelicerae on Princess Gryphine’s left shoulder. It turned its head, and with a swing of its right claw, struck Brendel square in the chest. The attack was so fast that Brendel was swept to the ground before he could react. Instantly, he became lightheaded.

He shook his head and was about to get back up, but he felt Anarons raise its front feet, pinning him by his shoulders. The giant spider then lowered its body and spread its chelicerae, revealing eight pairs of blood-red eyes with sharp fangs underneath.

Holy s.h.i.t, don’t tell me this guy is hungry!

Brendel’s eyes were wide open. He was so terrified that his heart almost popped out of his chest. After all, anyone who was going to become a behemoth’s next meal probably wouldn’t feel too good about it. His mind was spinning fast. As he was thinking of a way to get out of the situation, Her Highness repressed the pain and rushed up while pressing a hand to her shoulder. She raised her sword and slammed it into Anarons’ head.

The Mother of Spiders was about to bite Brendel, but it crashed into a rock and its mouth chomped on that instead. The wound on Princess Gryphine’s shoulder was ripped open once more by the blow. Anarons bit out a large chunk of the granite floor, leaving a pit and a pool of extremely corrosive venom. The princess let out a pained groan as the Mother of Spiders let out a roar of fury.

It immediately turned its head and spat a series of ink-green poison arrows at Princess Gryphine. Her Highness had been pressing her longsword against the Mother of Spiders’s chelicerae so she could not dodge it, and the magic equipment on her body had already lost its effectiveness. She could only close her eyes as if she was resigning herself to her fate.

However, the poisonous arrows did not descend on her as she had imagined. Princess Gryphine craned her neck for a moment before opening her eyes slightly and looked back. She was surprised to see a pale blue shield floating beside her, the poisonous arrows long since dissipated.

It was the Water Shield spell, a spell that even Elemental Apprentices could perform, but it was the biggest nemesis of Anarons’ Poison Arrow spell. This was a valuable experience for the players and Brendel’s greatest a.s.set.

After spraying poisonous arrows twice in a row, the Mother of Spiders couldn’t help but fall into a state of discouragement. Brendel, who had struggled to get a chance to catch his breath shouted, “Babasha, do something!”

In fact, he wanted to break free by himself but unfortunately, he and the Mother of Spiders were really not on the same level. It wasn’t something he could handle even if the Mother of Spiders was in a dispirited state.

Previously when he was fighting Williams, it was luck that allowed him to break the opponent’s Lines of Law using a Magic Cone, causing the opponent’s Law to backfire which killed him. However, it was also the guy’s own brainlessness that pulled him into the Ultimate Realm which caused the latter result. On the other hand, the Mother of Spiders was completely different. Even if he could bring out the G.o.dslayer Cone, it still required the enemy to have their Line of Law exposed for him to nail it. It was important to know that most Magic Monsters were very keen and would not simply reveal their Lines of Law.

Babasha finally thought of a solution. The wrinkled old witch immediately turned to her adopted daughter and shouted, “Sugar Jar! Hurry and use your spells!”

The maiden holding a jar of honey crawled out of the crack. Once she got out, Brendel saw a number of oddly shaped creatures emerge behind her. Some looked like cows or horses, others looked like magical or legendary creatures, and some were beings without specific names. Every living being had its own name and Brendel could tell at a glance that those were real names, names which were written on the codex that actually possessed power.

Most of those names were very unusual and were written in a variety of languages. Some were just a string of letters or words of unknown meaning. There was only one type of existence in this world that would use such a name.

Those were the Spirits of the Contract.

Contract Spirits.

It turned out that this little girl was a Spiritualist, a type of witch who specialized in psychics. Brendel vaguely remembered that it should be the knowledge pa.s.sed down from the Witches of Life and Death from the Silent Land, the witches that guarded the entrance to the Kingdom of the Dead.

So it turned out that she was one of them.

He stared wide-eyed as he watched Sugar Jar open her mouth and say, “Beings in this world who formed the Pure Contract with Sugar Jar, please bestow upon me your power.”

A pure black creature then flew out from behind her and descended upon the Mother of Spiders. The next thing Brendel knew, he felt the forelimbs of the Mother of Spiders which were pressing against his body come loose. He looked back to find that the scary creature had actually fallen asleep.

“Th.o.r.eau the Sleeping G.o.d!” Only then did Brendel identify the Contract Spirit that was summoned by Sugar Jar. Although Th.o.r.eau was a Contract Spirit, he was actually a Second Tier G.o.d.

There were not many witches who could summon such a powerful spirit, especially when Sugar Jar only had the abilities of a Silver Ranker. He immediately doubted her ident.i.ty. Could this maiden be a direct descendant of the Witch of Life and Death?

“Be quick, my lord.” Babasha rushed over to help Sugar Jar as the maiden had pa.s.sed out from exhaustion after casting the spell. “Sugar Jar’s spell has a big flaw, I don’t even know how long this thing will stay asleep.”

Startled, Brendel hurriedly crawled out from under the sleeping Mother of Spiders and picked up the equally listless princess. He then quickly ran towards the knights. Unfortunately, a roar came from behind him before he even managed to take two steps.

Then, a strong gust struck him.

Holy s.h.i.t, this spell lasts way too short! There was a sudden wail in Brendel’s heart. He hadn’t realized what Babasha meant when she said that Sugar Jar’s spell was flawed, but now he finally knew what it meant.

Isn’t that flaw a bit too extreme!
