The City of Terror

Chapter 2. Slugs?

The City of Terror – Chapter 2. Slugs?

One military dagger; a disposable cigarette lighter; three empty bottles, one small package of salt; and small rucksack.

Xiaobei took the military dagger from Zhou Lijun drawer; he never thought that the usually seemed honest and harmless Zhou Lijun was hiding such a lethal weapon in his possession.

There was a proverb that said “don’t disturb a leopard out of its domain”, it could presumably be appropriate for Zhou Lijun case; He was perhaps looked honest, gentle and harmless, but restless and ferocious within, though perhaps it was suppressed and only came out by external stimulus.

The sharp edge of the dagger had rusted in some small part, but it was even better than if he must bring rusty steel pipe everywhere. Wei Xiaobei whetting the dagger on the whetstone for few more times before the slightly rusted part was back to its former sharpness. He finally stopped as the rusty part from the dagger’s sharp edge gone; he let out a slightly satisfied smile after scrutinizing its sharpness.

He quickly put a lighter which he could use to make some fire and lighting into his pocket.

Empty bottles can be filled with water and salt was as important as weapon and essential for survival.

There were few p.o.r.n magazines taken by Xiaobei from Zhou Lijun drawer, and he could use it as toilet paper when needed, since it was better to have his a.s.s wiped by papers than having it wiped by some hard wood chip.

Wei Xiaobei realized that the world was probably had became chaotic and the only thing he knew that he must strive to survive! He wouldn’t let anything that could be useful for his survival got wasted.

Xiaobei inserted the dagger in the belt on his waist, took the empty bottles with his right hand and put the rest in the backpack. He carefully opened the door and slowly walked outside.

A cool breeze autumn wind was blown over him when he came out of the apartment and the withered leaves on the ground rolled and whirling near him, and the slight chills filling the air made Xiaobei slightly shook and trembled.

For a little while Xiaobei calmed his heart, and laughed, it seemed that he was too nervous and tense.

He continued walking past the flower bed and finally arrived at the courtyard gate in a short while.

His apartment was located at the urban and rural area of Lake City, it was a developing city which was constantly expanding and has a thriving economy; even the farmers here could make some money by converting part of their small farm and built a rental apartment which would gave them a considerable income.

Many white collars, gray collars, and blue collars who were struggling to survive the life in the city had rented a small cheap apartment here. And because their workplaces were pretty far from the apartment, they had to wake up at least an hour and half more early than their usual habit, and they must ate a thin pancake with soy-bean milk while standing and waiting for the bus and subway when they went to their workplaces.

Such situations were common in major cities in every country.

The surrounding scenery outside the courtyard was as chaotic as Xiaobei had guessed before, garbage were scattered on a small sandy road on both sides of the farmhouse.

Even half of building walls around the courtyard had been partially collapsed; the extreme conditions of the surrounding area left Wei Xiaobei heart became more restless and colder.

The circ.u.mstances here were not outside Xiaobei estimation, as he mentally prepared himself before getting out of the apartment.

Xiaobei continued walking next to the wall, and cautiously stepped forward; he remembered that there was a cafeteria nearby, which was located in front of the canteen that sold liquors fermented from rice. The store was owned by San Quan, a farmer who lived nearby. The liquor was perhaps not as good as the original brand it was imitating, but at least it was good enough for him.

He stopped walking after a short while; a facade of the canteen appeared in front of him, and the store sign on top of the building had already been cut off in half, and it seemed that the shop had been deserted for a long time. Xiaobei still clearly remembered the fat aunt whose name became the sign of her own store.

Half of the shutter aluminum door had been gone for he didn’t know how long, and leaving one side opened wide.

Wei Xiaobei lowered his body and strode half-ducked forward into the canteen.

The inside of the shop was pretty dusky and Xiaobei lighted up his lighter; a little yellow flame dimly illuminated the shop.

Wei Xiaobei started to observe everything inside the shop and search something he could scavenge.

Most of the foods he found here had been rotten already, and after searching more carefully, Xiaobei finally found two boxes mineral water, and a box of biscuits with unknown expiry date.

Xiaobei quickly opened the bottle and drank the mineral water inside as the thirst made his throat felt as if it was going to get burned.

Wonderful!

The restlessness was partially gone from Xiaobei heart, and replaced with some happiness as he drank a bottle of mineral water in one breath.

Xiaobei was finally understood the meaning behind happiness. A person could only felt happiness when he finally acquired something he really needed after striving hard for it.

Xiaobei put some mineral water bottles and a few packets of biscuits into his backpack. His backpack was not big enough to hold many things, and he eventually put five bottles and ten packets of biscuits in it.

He put the rest of the bottles and biscuits package at the corner of the canteen, as he was planning that he would retrieve it later.

So many things had happened and without him knowing anything made Xiaobei started to feel a surge of tiredness in his heart.

Oh? Suddenly, Xiaobei heard a vague sound from the outside; he quickly grabbed the empty bottle and took the military dagger from his wais, and stepped forward to the shutter and carefully looked toward the street outside.

Whole muscles in his body were tense and restless.

Garbage plastic bag were flying and scattered on the street outside, and Xiaobei saw a man wearing a T-s.h.i.+rt and a jeans run and chased by a giant blue greasy insect-like slug behind him. The slug was as thick as a man’s waist and about 1 meter long.

n.o.body would have thought that such kind of insect-like slug, given the size of it, could called cute or even lovable, only sick and disgusted feeling could come out from a slug like that.

Xiaobei didn’t even have a time to feel disgusted for this small slug. He was just stupefied, while seeing the man was running in fear.

Only at that moment did Xiaobei realized that he recognized the running man. He faintly remembered that he had seen him before, near the street side stalls. He was wearing a security uniform at that time, and he loved eating noodles. However, Xiaobei couldn’t recall this running man’s name at all.

It was unknown if the giant slug sense was too sensitive or not, but it seemed aware that Xiaobei had moved near the broken shutter door as it’s two tentacles-like antennae was pointing out to the canteen.

Traces of blue electricity spark quietly between the two antennae and a line of sharp small teeth when it opened its mouth, leaving a taste of horror for anyone who saw it.

This giant slug undoubtedly was not some kind of friendly thing; anyone wouldn’t have to be an expert to find out what those glimmering-sharp small teeth meant to be.

Seeing how the giant slug abruptly slow its pace down, the man suddenly accelerated his speed, an attempt to escape.

However in that moment there was sparkling blue electricity flas.h.i.+ng from the giant slug antennae and it took less than second for the spark to pa.s.s through 5m distance and accurately strike the running man’s back.

Electrical currents leaped up and down the running man’s body until he collapsed to the ground.
