It was a cold morning on the day the new semester officially began.
After the second period ended on that Monday morning, exercise music was broadcasted throughout the school. The students filed out in haphazard rows and then headed towards the sports field.
The wind was howling overhead, and Li Erqin shivered in the crowd as she followed everyone else in the exercise routine. When it was time to stretch, no matter what, she could not bring herself to stretch completely. Her body shriveled into itself, and her hands refused to come out of her sleeves. When it came time to run and jump, her movements could not really be called running and jumping. If the heels lifted off the ground even minimally, it was already considered one of the more proper attempts at exercising amongst the crowd.
As Li Erqin was doing a torso twist, she took advantage of the movement to look over at the boys’ side of the field. She searched the last row for Rong Si’s silhouette.
It was easy to spot him, and an idiom immediately popped into her head: *鹤立鸡群 heilijichun, a crane amongst chickens.
(T/N: to stand out from the crowd, can be used literally and figuratively.)
He was really very tall.
He stood in the last row, and in the distance behind him she could see the school motto on the wall.
Under the beautiful, bright winter sun, Rong Si’s pale skin seemed to radiate and give off a glow. In a crowd of hundreds and thousands, she could always pick him out right away.
He was that brilliant.
Li Erqin could not look away.
(Minodayz : LEQ you are so orgling him! Hahahaha – must be yummy to look at aye!)
Before she had to twist back and wrest her line of sight from him, she had carefully observed his movements. It was not like he was stretching any more diligently than the others, but his movements were just so graceful.
If you had long arms and long legs, does everything you do end up looking great?
With the second round of torso twists, Li Erqin went ahead and looked straight in Rong Si’s direction. She did not expect that she’d be meeting his gaze directly! Fl.u.s.tered, she turned her head back and did not dare to look in his direction anymore.
–So…
–Was Rong Si looking at her too?
–Pooh! Pooh! Pooh!
–Wishful thinking!
Poor Li Erqin. It was getting increasingly difficult to look Rong Si in the eyes after that. Eventually, she couldn’t even look him in the face. She would get up to the collarbone and just stop, not daring to look up any further. After a week of this evasion, Rong Si finally stopped Li Erqin as she was preparing to head to the broadcasting studio.
Li Erqin was startled by Rong Si’s sudden appearance and subconsciously looked up at his face, only to stop once again at his collarbone.
Rong Si couldn’t help but let out a laugh. “What are you doing?”
Li Erqin still didn’t lift her head up. “What?”
Rong Si bent over to look Li Erqin in the eyes. “Shall we chat?”
“About what?”
Rong Si said helplessly, “If you keep lowering your head like this, I’ll have to resort to sitting on the floor to talk with you.”
Inwardly, Li Erqin said no with all her heart.
–You definitely cannot! If you sit on the floor, the only thing I can do is to probably stick my face into the floor …
(MInodayz: OH my goodness, LEQ can you get any cuter with your thoughts! Lol I could almost see RS sitting and your face splat on the ground! LMAO!!!)
(MissBookie: Why am I picturing an Ostrich here? Sticking it’s head in the sand…? :
P)
“Erqin.” Rong Si turned serious. “Have I done something to upset you?”
“What?” Li Erqin was still daydreaming about smashing her face on the floor. When she heard Rong Si’s question, she was startled. “Why?”
“… That’s what I’m asking you.”
Li Erqin promptly denied it. “No.”
Rong Si smiled and his whole demeanor relaxed. “Why are you hiding from me?”
“I’m not!”
“Really?”
“Really!”
Rong Si was silent for a few seconds, and then he said softly, “Lift your head and look at me.”
Li Erqin said and did nothing.
“So,” Rong Si sighed, “why can’t you look at me?”
Li Erqin quibbled, “That’s not the case at all!”
“Then raise your head and look at me.”
Li Erqin continued to keep her sight fixed on his collarbone.
Rong Si waited quietly for her.
After some time, he casually let out a single, monotone syllable. “Hmm?”
Li Erqin was incited and jolted into action. She clenched her teeth and lifted her head to look him in the eye forcefully.
He was smiling.
(Imagine that cup was LEQ – LOL @missbookie!)
The smile permeated through eyes that sparkled like the stars. And what’s more, a gentle warmth was emanating from them.
(Minodayz : swooning big time – these 2 are just soooooooo cute!!!)
Li Erqin felt her throat tighten, and she found herself unable to speak.
Rong Si looked at her and noted the clever wit in her eyes, her cute little nose, her elegant chin.
And also …
(MissBookie: Hit it, Sebastian!)
(Minodayz : Sha la la la – kiss the girl…..
Rong Si moved his line of sight away from her lips. “I’m off to do my rounds.”
“Oh.” Li Erqin blinked in surprise. “Then I’m off to the broadcasting studio.”
The two then turned and headed off in opposite directions to their respective destinations.
(MissBookie: Oh, dang it!)
(Minodayz :my fantasy or maybe RS too!!
That day, the female announcer who did the afternoon broadcast uncharacteristically made three mistakes.
Peng Zige and Su Zi were sitting in their seats and chatting, and Li Erqin’s usual seat was occupied by a girl from the next row over. When Li Erqin made her third, more obvious mistake, the girls in that row t.i.ttered simultaneously. “That’s the third time.”
Peng Zige was worried. “What’s wrong with Li Erqin today?”
Su Zi said, “I don’t know.”
At that moment, Rong Si entered the room, and Peng Zige naturally went to speak to him. “Why does Li Erqin keep messing up the broadcast today?”
“Really?” Rong Si was preoccupied. When he went to sit down, his knee b.u.mped spectacularly into the desk leg and there was a big noise.
Peng Zige was very startled. “Ah Si … what’s the matter with you today?”
“Careless.”
Peng Zige: “……”
Rong Si took out a book from his desk and opened it. Next to him, Peng Zige suddenly let out an “Oh” and then loudly exclaimed, “Ah Si!”
Rong Si looked at him.
“Something’s going on between you and Li Erqin!”
It was Rong Si’s turn to be speechless.
“I’m right, right?!”
Rong Si took out his earphones in an unhurried manner and stuck one in his left ear. Before he put the other one in, he gave a grim laugh. “Hnh…”
Peng Zige yelled, “Su Zi!! He’s guilty!!”
Rong Si took out his earbuds and smiled. “Zige.”
“Yes?” said Peng Zige.
