Her phone vibrated again.
Once again it was a text from Rong Si: [Stick your hand out from under the desk.]
As she was reading the text, Rong Si had sent a follow-up text: [secretly.]
When she saw the word ‘secretly’ on his text message, Li Erqin’s heart suddenly skipped a beat and then began to thunder frantically. .
Obediently, she carefully moved her chair to touch the back desk. Then she covertly reached her hand under the desk behind her.
Just as she stretched out her hand, something icy cold was stuffed into her palm.
Li Erqin was so surprised that she let out a soft exclamation.
However, that instantly attracted everyone’s attention.
Blushing, she hurriedly retracted her hand, cradling the object to her chest while her head kept buzzing.
Behind her, Rong Si was softly chuckling.
She couldn’t be bothered to look back at him, nor could she follow Peng Zige’s example of glaring at Rong Si.
Finally, when everyone’s attention had returned to what they had been doing prior to her exclamation, Li Erqin slowly unfurled her hand.

With the weak lighting below the desk, she saw in her hand a half-melted s...o...b..ll. The melted snow slowly trailed along the creases between her fingers, gently flowing like stars streaking across the edges on her hand. Then there was the s...o...b..ll that looked like a ball of jewel; it held such icy coldness that it brought about an immediate, stabbing pain.
However, what was more immediate and obvious was her frenzied racing heart.
As she watched the s...o...b..ll gradually dissolving in her palm, she turned back to look at Rong Si.
Rong Si’s eyes looked as if they reflected the glittering snow light. They were luminescent beyond words.
Li Erqin bit on her lower lip and tried to get a hold of her wayward, erratic heart. Her face, however, maintained its usual calm expression. “Hand.”
Rong Si looked at her, and a quiet smile appeared as he reached out his hand over the top of his desk.
With his palm facing up, his five, slender fingers were lightly curled up, and his thin wrist bone was prominently seen.
Li Erqin tilted her head and with nary a word, she placed her hand onto Rong Si’s palm!
(Minodayz: OMG … she made a move??? AHHHHH … Sha lalalalala Sing Sebastian sing… )
Both of their palms were joined.
Ice cold and warmth.
Moist and dry.
This time, Rong Si let out a ‘*piff’ before breaking out in laughter.
(Minodayz: I’m trying to work out that sound and action whereby a chortle before laughter escape – I’m melting like a s...o...b..ll too! Sooooo cute these 2)
Li Erqin hurriedly retracted her hand before Peng Zige took note of what she had done.
Nonetheless, Peng Zige was alerted to the movement and turned to look suspiciously at them. “What have you two been up to?”
Rong Si brought his hand back and returned to his ‘calm as still water’ expression. “Li Erqin was asking me a question.”
Li Erqin looked over totally flabbergasted. Rong Si, *how could you?!
(T/N: Literally she thought, Rong Si, I can’t believe you’re that kind of a person – more like how could you throw me und
er the bus!)
Peng Zige was finding it dubious. “Asking you a question could be that funny?”
Rong Si deadpan replied, “Because she forgot to bring her book.”
Li Erqin was totally lost for words and utterly bewildered.
(Minodayz: that was just so hilariously and it’s like RS would making the joke now! Soooo cute.)
For the remainder of the evening self-study cla.s.s, Li Erqin felt as if her palm was hot. After the initial biting pain from the cold s...o...b..ll, the subsequent scorching hot, burning sensation had not receded.
The sensation lasted right until the end of their evening self-study cla.s.s, when the four of them had completed packing up and were heading back to their hostel. The snow had been falling all evening and was not showing any signs of stopping. The icy cold wind blew in from outside into the corridors, slapping into everyone’s faces.

Li Erqin and Su Zi huddled behind Rong Si and Peng Zige’s backs as they walked down. Hot and cold air blasted intermittently between cla.s.srooms and corridor, and both girls were not able to stop shivering from the cold.
Of course, even the *tall and strong Peng Zige was shivering from the cold.
(T/N: 人高马大 rengaomada – tall person, big horse, i.e. tall and strong)
Peng Zige shivered uncontrollably as he turned and drew closer to Rong Si for warmth. “It’s freezing cold! This precious baby is freezing to death!”
Li Erqin’s and Su Zi’s eyes met.
Speechless.
Rong Si allowed Peng Zige to squeeze closer to him.
After walking a little further down though, Peng Zige started to have some misgivings. “What about the two of them?”
Stopping in his tracks, he looked back to see Li Erqin and Su Zi using Rong Si as a wind blocker and began to feel rather indignant. “How can you two do that?”
Su Zi asked, “How can we do what?”
“*To share in blessing and to endure in trials…”
(T/N: 有福同享,有难同当 youfutongxiang, younantongdang, idiom aka for better or worse)
Li Erqin interrupted, “This idiom sounds rather familiar.”
Su Zi nodded. “He’s used it a few times before.”
An annoyed Peng Zige replied, “Since you recall me using it a few times before, *why didn’t you be proactive and take action…”
(T/N: 悬崖勒马,Xuányálèmǎ, – is an idiom describing reining in a horse just as you reach the precipice – meaning quick timely action, 回头是岸 huítóushì’àn – means to turn back to the safety of the sh.o.r.e/banks.)
Su Zi completely ignored him saying, “Reining in the horse at the precipice and returning to sh.o.r.e, is this how these idioms are supposed to be used?”
Peng Zige glared at her. “Like you’d know?”
“How about,” Li Erqin suggested, “you stand behind me and I’ll block the wind from you.”
“What?”
Li Erqin said, “I’m serious. Not lying through my teeth here.”
“That’s not very good though, right?” said Peng Zige.
Li Erqin pressed on. “I will let everyone who looks on the scene suspiciously know that I am doing it willingly.”
Peng Zige *gasped, “Isn’t that a man’s job?”
(T/N: 气绝 qijue – means dying breath – such exaggeration only PZG can do! lol)
Li Erqin’s mouth twitched. “Aren’t you a precious baby?”
Peng Zige: “Ohh.”
As they walked out of the school building, they had to make use of the few lights that were alighted from various cla.s.srooms to see where they were going. Looking ahead, the world seemed to have been blanketed in a thick layer of snow.
They were so mesmerised by the scene before them that they forgot all about the cold.
Li Erqin and Peng Zige simultaneously sighed as they came to a stop.
Suddenly, there was a group of rambunctious boys who were playfully running down, and as they ran past Li Erqin, someone’s arm b.u.mped into a now stationary Li Erqin’s shoulder.
The soles of her shoes couldn’t gain traction on the snowy ground. She calmly tried as hard as she could, but in the end, Li Erqin failed to maintain her balance.
As her face was plunging down to meet the ground, she glimpsed a familiar figure rush out from the group of boys, attempting to catch her.
Li Erqin did not know how she could have kept her eyes open at that moment to look clearly upon the person.
Ruan Mingxian.
Thank goodness for Ruan Mingxian.
