We entered a modest room with a handful of lounges, low coffee tables and rows of books on shelves filling up the walls. The smell of wood polish, coffee and tea lingered about the air. I sensed a warmth from the three seater lounge that Ryuu had me sit on.
The room was comforting.
I felt a rush of air to my back and turned to see Leinard and Dr. Mercer walk through the door. War and Death entered behind them.
The sight of Small Cap crawling onto the lounge and into my blazer pocket perked me up.
_"Is Freend okay?"_ His voice soothed my mind and made my heart race with hope. I wanted to cry with happiness at hearing his voice in my head.
I nodded and glanced to the men with hope. My hope fell when I saw them talking and I couldn"t hear their voices.

_"Famine, can you hear my voice?"_ Leinard asked telepathically.
I nodded, which made him sigh with relief.
The mad doctor sat next to me and began poking at my ears with a small light. He had me open my mouth and go, "aah". Then cupped my temples in his gloved hands and closed his eyes.
I felt his presence in my mind, searching and examining recesses. Black and white blurry blobs rushed to my head as a form of retaliation to his prodding.
He gently released my mind and turned to Death, swapping positions with him.
He spoke aloud his conclusion that I obviously couldn"t hear.
_"Dr. Mercer is sure he can stop the mind shield"s deterioration and repair some damage through Heart Cakra magic. As you"re a hīrā, it might fix most of your hearing loss."_ Leinard calmly advised of my situation.
I glanced to the good doctor and noticed his expression tense and serious.
_"There"re risks right?"_ I probed Leinard"s mind.
Leinard sighed and showed me the risks that could occur, which was my heart stopping, permanent deafness both physically and telepathically and a rapid decline of brain function that would render me a mindless vegetable and no different to a hollow-eye ghost.
On the other hand, it was also the only way to stop the mind shield"s decline and ensure a chance for my hearing to return if there were no damage to my cochlear nerve and/or auditory cortex.
If my nerve was damaged, I"d likely be permanently deaf whereas damage only to the auditory cortex would allow me to hear, but without any distinction.
So, it was either hear senseless noise or nothing at all. I was soberly advised that even a Hīrā had their limits and this was something unavoidable if either situation were to occur.
_"Let"s focus on what we need to do first."_ Leinard patted my back.
He and War moved the low coffee table (before me) and other furniture aside, so there was clear wooden floor before me.
I was prompted to sit in the middle of the three seater lounge before the cleared s.p.a.ce. Death sat on my left and War on my right.
Leinard removed his colonel cap, gloves, socks and shoes. He went to stand on the other side of the room, facing me.
He released a deep breath to bring his mind into focus; closed his eyes and began reciting a spell, moving his arms and legs in a meticulous graceful dance, which stirred a soothing breeze around the room.
I felt a strong vibration and feeling of excited magical energy swell within the s.p.a.ce before me.
Light glowed around Leinard"s gloveless hands, he released a spurt of light that formed magic words and a circular six-pointed-star within the floral disc of an open lotus symbol.
Somewhere in my heart I recognised the symbol as the Heart Cakra.
The heart cakra dropped to the ground and burned with a brilliant green-blue light before my eyes.
Leinard stepped into the cakra"s center and lowered himself into a cross legged position on the ground.
He faced me and clapped his hands together in prayer; closed his eyes and recited a mantra.
Death placed his hands over the area of my heart. War held his hands over my ears.
The mad doctor stepped up behind Leinard and did a graceful dance on the spot that stirred a white light to fall over Leinard, which seemed to be keeping him rooted.
Ryuu went behind the doctor with his hands hovering at his back in a set position, like he was holding him up. He was also reciting a mantra with intense focus.
I felt Leinard"s spirit flow through my body as a song being sung in my mind.
A delicate warmth soothed away my lingering pains and ringing of my ears. I felt at peace as I was being healed. I was sad when his spirit left me.
The cakra symbol rose around him and shrunk inwards like his body was absorbing the energy.
Eventually the light went out. Everyone heaved a weary sigh to signify the ritual being over.
I felt clear headed with the pain and ringing in my ears gone.
My brothers moved away from me to help Leinard into the seat next to me.
He was clammy and wheezing. I gave him a healing kiss and realised the truth of my situation. He was right about a Hīrā having their limits in regard to self healing.
He said my name aloud. Of course, I didn"t hear it. He said it again in my mind.
_"I"m relieved I can still hear your voice this way."_ I smiled weakly.
He sighed and faced Death who was struggling to get a grip on what his good intentions had inadvertently caused.
